Douglas Yule is an American musician and singer, most notable for being a member of the Velvet Underground from 1968 to 1973. When John Cale left the Velvet Underground at the behest of Lou Reed in 1968, Yule joined the band (then consisting of Reed, Sterling Morrison and Maureen Tucker) as Cale's replacement. Yule made his first studio appearance on their third album, The Velvet Underground (1969), playing bass and organ, as well as singing lead vocals on the ballad "Candy Says" and co-singing the chorus of the album's penultimate track, "The Murder Mystery", with Maureen Tucker. Yule's contribution to the LP was considerable, and his vocals would later come in handy on the road. When Reed's voice became strained from touring, Yule would sing lead on several songs. Doug Yule - The Velvet Underground - Lost Track - Squeeze Test Pressing

In 2022 a record store in Los Angeles named CD Trader stumbled upon a US test pressing of Squeeze and it includes an additional song that did not make it on the released record. This song has not been heard in 50 years! CD Trader released a 60 second clip of the unnamed track. This is low quality audio recorded in the store through a cell phone microphone so please judge accordingly The album Squeeze was only released in Europe and the UK so it is a mystery as to why an American test pressing exists at all Doug Yule was contacted about the track by musician Simon Love. Doug Yule (Velvet Underground) - Let It Shine

In 1973, Doug Yule formed a band in New Hampshire with his brother Billy on drums, George Kay on Bass, and Don Silverman on guitar. A promoter booked them to play May 27th at Oliver’s in Boston and, in spite of the band’s wishes, advertised them as “the Velvet Underground.” The set consisted of 4 songs written by Lou Reed, 5 songs written by Yule, and this song, written and sung by George Kay. Thanks to Don Silverman (who now goes by the name Noor Khan) for giving me some insight into this track. Doug Yule & Lou Reed / "Satellite of Love" LIVE Marseille 1975

This rare treat was taped by an audience member at the 15 March date of Lou Reed's 1975 European tour. Doug Yule played lead guitar and occasionally the organ on this tour. He typically sang "New Age" during the sets, and during this particularly show, he sang the lead vocal for "Satellite of Love"! There's no other instance of this, on this tour or elsewhere, so it's quite a treat. The audience goes crazy for Doug! This was restored masterfully by Steve Stroud. The original tape had a lot of noise and clipping. Thank you Steve! The Velvet Underground - Candy Says - Live Video with Audio!

"Candy Says" live at the Paramount Theatre, Springfield MA, April 17, 1970 Video shot by Steve Nelson on monochrome soundless videotape. The audio was captured separately by unknown source I was excited by the 30 second clip of new footage in the Todd Haynes documentary and even more excited when I learned that audio existed from that same show! (In the documentary Haynes uses the audio from the studio version of the song.) I just took a little time and combined the audio from the bootlegged concert with the video from the documentary. Todd Haynes edited the song in the VU documentary to use the first half of the chorus and then the end of the chorus (skipping the "I want to watch them pass me by..." line). Sterling Morrison left the Velvet Underground after a show in Houston. He was quickly replaced by Doug Yule's former bandmate in the Glass Menagerie keyboardist Willie "Loco" Alexander. The new line-up toured the United States promoting the album "Loaded" as they prepared for a major 35 scheduled dates tour of Europe to promote the album's European release.
