Her wariness of the conventions of language, her bending of the normal rules of punctuation, sentence length, and so on, are used to create a feminine prose, which Richardson saw as necessary for the expression of female experience. Virginia Woolf in 1923 noted that Richardson "has invented, or, if she has not invented, developed and applied to her own uses, a sentence which we might call the psychological sentence of the feminine gender." Miriam Henderson is one of what novelist Dolf Wyllarde (in her great work, The Pathway of the Pioneer) termed 'nous autres,' i.e., young gentlewomen who must venture forth and earn their living after their fathers have been financially ruined. Also, she has read Villette; she thus applies for and is offered a job teaching conversational English at a girls' school, albeit in Germany rather than France. Pointed Roofs describes her year abroad, as she endeavors to make her way in the hotbed of seething female personalities that populate the school, overseen by her employer, the formidable Fraulein. Richardson is adroit at conveying nuances of human perception through acutely observed physical and emotional detail. She was unfortunately labeled the inventor of stream of consciousness, and her later novels suffered when she started believing her own press; but her early ones (the first half-dozen are pre-1923) are free from stylistic excess, and are poignant -- or in this case -- pointed explorations of the workings of the human mind. Backwater (Pilgrimage, Vol. 2)
Dorothy RICHARDSON (1873 - 1957)
"Backwater" is the second volume of "Pilgrimage," a series of thirteen autobiographical novels by Dorothy Richardson considered to have pioneered the "stream of consciousness" technique of writing. In a review of the first volume in the series, "Pointed Roofs" (The Egoist April 1918), May Sinclair first applied the term "stream of consciousness" in her discussion of Richardson's stylistic innovations. Richardson, however, preferred the term "interior monologue." Miriam Henderson, the central character in Pilgrimage, is based on the author's own life between 1891 and 1915. Richardson is also important as a feminist writer because of the way her work assumes the validity and importance of female experiences as a subject for literature.

Her wariness of the conventions of language, her bending of the normal rules of punctuation, sentence length, and so on, are used to create a feminine prose, which Richardson saw as necessary for the expression of female experience. Virginia Woolf in 1923 noted that Richardson 'has invented, or, if she has not invented, developed and applied to her own uses, a sentence which we might call the psychological sentence of the feminine gender.' Pointed Roofs
Dorothy RICHARDSON (1873 - 1957)
Miriam Henderson is one of what novelist Dolf Wyllarde (in her great work, The Pathway of the Pioneer) termed "nous autres," i.e., young gentlewomen who must venture forth and earn their living after their fathers have been financially ruined. Pointed Roofs describes her year abroad, as she endeavors to make her way in the hotbed of seething female personalities that populate the school, overseen by her employer, the formidable Fraulein.
Richardson is adroit at conveying nuances of human perception ...

Richardson also important as a feminist writer because of the way her work assumes the validity and importance of female experiences as a subject for literature. (Introduction by Grant Hurlock)

"Pointed Roofs" is the first volume of "Pilgrimage," a series of thirteen autobiographical novels by Dorothy Richardson considered to have pioneered the "stream of consciousness" technique of writing. Richardson also important as a feminist writer because of the way her work assumes the validity and importance of female experiences as a subject for literature. Her wariness of the conventions of language, her bending of the normal rules of punctuation, sentence length, and so on, are used to create a feminine prose, which Richardson saw as necessary for the expression of female experience. Virginia Woolf in 1923 noted that Richardson "has invented, or, if she has not invented, developed and applied to her own uses, a sentence which we might call the psychological sentence of the feminine gender." Pointed Roofs
215 editions published between 1849 and 2020 in 6 languages and held by 3,488 libraries worldwide
Presented as narratives of his own South Sea experiences, Melville's first two books had roused incredulity in many readers. Their disbelief, he declared, had been "the main inducement" in altering his plan for his third book, Mardi: and a Voyage Thither (1849). Melville wanted to exploit the "rich poetical material" of Polynesia and also to escape feeling "irked, cramped, & fettered" by a narrative of facts. "I began to feel . . . a longing to plume my pinions for a flight," he told his English publisher. This scholarly edition aims to present a text as close to the author's intention as surviving evidence permits. Based on collations of all editions publishing during Melville's lifetime, it incorporates author corrections and many emendations made by the present editors. This edition of Mardi is an Approved Text of the Center for Editions of American Authors (Modern Language Association of America). -- Amazon.com

Typee is a fast-moving adventure tale, an autobiographical account of the author's Polynesian stay, an examination of the nature of good and evil, and a frank exploration of sensuality and exotic ritual
White-jacket: or, The world in a man-of-war by Herman Melville( file )
72 editions published between 1850 and 2017 in English and held by 3,142 libraries worldwide
Herman Melville wrote White-Jacket; or, The World in a Man-of-War, during two months of intense work in the summer of 1849. He drew upon his memories of naval life, having spent fourteen months as an ordinary seaman aboard a frigate as it sailed the Pacific and made the homeward voyage around Cape Horn. Already that same summer, Melville had written Redburn, and he regarded the books as "two jobs, which I have done for money--being forced to it, as other men are to sawing wood." The reviewers were not as hard on White-Jacket as Melville himself was. The English liked its praise of British seamen. The Americans were more interested in Melville's attack on naval abuses, particularly flogging, and his advocacy of humanitarian causes. Soon Melville was acclaimed the best sea writer of the day. Part autobiography, part epic fiction, White-Jacket remains a brilliantly imaginative social novel by one of the great writers of the sea. This text of the story is an Approved Text of the Center for Editions of American Authors (Modern Language Association of America).

Mardi and a voyage thither by Herman Melville( Book )

Could there be a more iconic country singer, or American singer for that matter, than the unmatchable Dolly Parton? Her iconic voice, over-the-top look, and business acumen combine to create a true powerhouse of pop. But what led Parton to adopt her signature style? And why do so many of today’s pop and country music stars–from country superstars like Dierks Bentley and Miranda Lambert to pop celebrities like Taylor Swift and her own goddaughter, Miley Cyrus–claim her as a mentor?

It’s time to look closer into the life of this formidable force in the music industry. Dolly Parton grew up in poverty in a small Tennessee town at the foothills of the Great Smoky Mountains. It was the quintessential American country town, and Parton had listened to country and blues music since she was just a wee baby. So naturally, when she discovered she had a talent for singing and performing, it was the country she was drawn to. Parton released her first single, Puppy Love, when she was just 11 years old. The year was 1959. Who knew that just ten years later, she’d nab her first Grammy nomination! Dolly Parton went on to establish her signature look, despite intense criticism from all kinds of people. It was all big hair, lots of makeup, and extravagant clothing choices that enhanced her unashamedly curvaceous figure.
Everyone from music execs to fans was confused. Why didn’t she just emulate the look of other successful stars of the time? But according to Parton, she needed a way to stand out from the crowd. In fact, she claims to have based her look off the “tramps” from her hometown of Sevierville! Dolly’s not shy about plastic surgery, either, and happily admits to going under the knife in the name of beauty.
Keen to learn more about why Dolly Parton looks and acts the way she does? Be sure to watch this video right to the end to find out more about her unbeatable influence and charm.
