Language
Majority of the population speak East Miraya, an Albay Bikol language of Inland Bikol group of languages. The language is also spoken in Daraga, Albay and some parts of Pilar, Sorsogon. It is mutually intelligible with West Miraya and Rinconada Bikol. People of Donsol can also speak and understand Tagalog or Filipino, the national language, and English.
Donsol is an indie film written and directed by Adolfo Alix, Jr. about a summer love made in the island of Donsol. The movie produced by Bicycle Pictures stars Sid Lucero and Angel Aquino.
Synopsis
Donsol is a movie about a whaleshark guide named Daniel who falls in love with the beautiful but mysterious tourist Teresa. The two individuals are nursing their own heartaches but find themselves hopelessly drawn to each other; Daniel was left behind by his girlfriend for a rich man, Teresa a widowed breast cancer patient.
The film was shot entirely in Donsol, Sorsogon and there are underwater shots of the star of the movie the butanding (whaleshark). It tackled major issues like illegal fishing that poses threats to the butanding. Fidel (Daniel's father) is an illegal fisherman and was caught by the police coast guard. This created friction between the relationship of Daniel and the kapitana of the town who provided jobs for them as a Butanding Interaction Officer or BIO.
The film was the Philippines' official submission to the OSCARS Foreign Language Film category in 2007.
This coastal town is a true gem that has captured the hearts of visitors worldwide. The town is renowned for its whale shark and squid; the whale shark capital of the world, Amazing Donsol!

Whale sharks organically go to Donsol to feed, and tourism is built around that. Local authorities have put in rules and regulations to ensure the long-term sustainability of Donsol’s marine life. We’ve left the hustle and bustle of BGC Manila and flown down to the beach city of Donsol, where we’re hoping to catch a glimpse of the glowing trees of fireflies and cash in a raincheck for swimming with the majestic whale sharks of the Philippines. But speaking of rain, we’ve had constant showers since stepping off the plane last night, so we’re hoping to attract a little luck this morning while we wait for our guide.
We had a whale shark excursion booked in the south of Cebu, but after doing a little research on the most ethical ways to interact with these gentle giants, we decided to cancel that opportunity and instead spend the day searching for the most adventurous street foods in Cebu City.
As much as we love the idea of hugging baby penguins and as much as Colt likes catching lizards, as a general rule, we respect the mentality of observing nature instead of interfering with it. Other dive sites attract whale sharks by chumming the water, which creates an unnatural dependencies. Here in Donsol, these activities are done right, which can mean less reliability that you’ll encounter any of them but when you do, you know that you’re doing much less to disturb their existence.

Whalesharks, magnificent creatures of the deep, visit once a year the turquoise waters of Donsol.
Daniel, the young guide who swims with the whalesharks, finds himself drawn to Teresa, a woman as beautiful and mysterious as the visitors of the sea. Burdened by past heartaches and uncertain of the future, the two find sanctuary in each other as love surfaces anew.

ABOUT US
We’re the Lockwoods. And we’re traveling the world to experience—up close and in person—all the natural wonders and distinct cultures that our kids would otherwise be consuming only through textbooks and TV. We think it’s a better way to learn and we’re working hard to fund this little experiment in the hope that our kids will grow up wiser, kinder, and more grateful for the beauty of our diverse planet and its people.
People all over the world flock to Philippines’ coastal town of Donsol to get a glimpse of whale sharks, known as Butanding. Whale sharks organically go to Donsol to feed, and tourism is built around that. Local authorities have put in rules and regulations to ensure the long-term sustainability of Donsol’s marine life. CNA’s Buena Bernal reports.

Love is an ocean of emotions.
As the tide rises and recedes in a cycle of loss and renewal, Donsol provides the breathtaking backdrop to a story of heartbreak, and the healing power of love.
Hosted by veteran journalists Susan Enriquez and Mark Salazar, ‘I Juander’ uncovers the truth behind widely-accepted Filipino customs, beliefs, and questions.
