In arithmetic, long division is a standard division algorithm suitable for dividing multidigit numbers that is simple enough to perform by hand. It breaks down a division problem into a series of easier steps. As in all division problems, one number, called the dividend, is divided by another, called the divisor, producing a result called the quotient. It enables computations involving arbitrarily large numbers to be performed by following a series of simple steps. The abbreviated form of long division is called short division, which is almost always used instead of long division when the divisor has only one digit. Chunking (also known as the partial quotients method or the hangman method) is a less-efficient form of long division which may be easier to understand.
Place in education
Inexpensive calculators and computers have become the most common way to solve division problems, eliminating a traditional mathematical exercise, and decreasing the educational opportunity to show how to do so by paper and pencil techniques. (Internally, those devices use one of a variety of division algorithms). In the United States, long division has been especially targeted for de-emphasis, or even elimination from the school curriculum, by reform mathematics, though traditionally introduced in the 4th or 5th grades.
Division, in horticulture and gardening, is a method of asexualplant propagation, where the plant (usually an herbaceousperennial) is broken up into two or more parts. Both the root and crown of each part is kept intact. The technique is of ancient origin, and has long been used to propagate bulbs such as garlic and saffron. Division is mainly practiced by gardeners and very small nurseries, as most commercial plant propagation is now done through plant tissue culture.
Division is one of the three main methods used by gardeners to increase stocks of plants (the other two are seed-sowing and cuttings). Division is usually applied to mature perennial plants, but may also be used for shrubs with suckering roots, such as gaultheria, kerria and sarcococca. Annual and biennial plants do not lend themselves to this procedure, as their lifespan is too short.
Most perennials are best divided and replanted every few years to keep them healthy. They may also be divided in order to produce new plants. Those with woody crowns or fleshy roots need to be cut apart, while others can be prized apart using garden forks or hand forks. Each separate section must have both shoots and roots. Division can take place at almost any time of the year, but the best seasons are Autumn and Spring.
In heraldry, the field (background) of a shield can be divided into more than one area, or subdivision, of different tinctures, usually following the lines of one of the ordinaries and carrying its name (e.g. a shield divided in the shape of a chevron is said to be parted "per chevron"). Shields may be divided this way for differencing (to avoid conflict with otherwise similar coats of arms) or for purposes of marshalling (combining two or more coats of arms into one), or simply for style. The lines that divide a shield may not always be straight, and there is a system of terminology for describing patterned lines, which is also shared with the heraldic ordinaries. French heraldry takes a different approach in many cases from the one described in this article.
Common divisions of the field
Common partitions of the field are:
parted (or party) per fess (halved horizontally)
party per pale (halved vertically)
party per bend (diagonally from upper left to lower right)
party per bend sinister (diagonally from upper right to lower left)
A division algorithm is an algorithm which, given two integers N and D, computes their quotient and/or remainder, the result of division. Some are applied by hand, while others are employed by digital circuit designs and software.
Division algorithms fall into two main categories: slow division and fast division. Slow division algorithms produce one digit of the final quotient per iteration. Examples of slow division include restoring, non-performing restoring, non-restoring, and SRT division. Fast division methods start with a close approximation to the final quotient and produce twice as many digits of the final quotient on each iteration. Newton–Raphson and Goldschmidt fall into this category.

R = Remainder
is the output.
Division by repeated subtraction
The simplest division algorithm, historically incorporated into a greatest common divisor algorithm presented in Euclid's Elements, Book VII, Proposition 1, finds the remainder given two positive integers using only subtractions and comparisons:

Long Division
The vid is intended for students who have been using short division successfully for enough time that they are fully confident with the process. It is NOT intended as a student's first ever encounter with the division process. When those students see this video, the process of long division will click quickly for them.
My view is that long division is best for when there is a large divisor, because when there's a big divisor, you can make mistakes if trying to find the remainder by mental math.
I advocate the use of a mini-table of multiples. It's good for students to think in terms of patterns of multiples and this helps them do that. My view is that long division is best for when there is a large divisor, because when there's a big divisor, you can make mistakes if trying to find the remainder by mental math.
I advocate the use of a mini-table of multiples. It's good for students to think in terms of patterns of multiples and this helps them do that. Breaking the math into 2 stages helps students who struggle because they have distinct chunks of work to do. This will allow the process of the division to take place more smoothly, and that's a MASSIVE help to students. Yes, they spend a bit of time on multiplying some values they won't need. But the end game is an easier time during the division process and this will get them there.

The steps for long division of polynomials are the same as for long division of numbers and can be summarized as:
1) Find how many times the first term of your divisor (on the left) goes into the first term of your dividend (on the right).
2) Write that number (or "x" expression) on the top line above your dividend, aligned vertically with the term it's most similar to (like term).
3) Multiply that number (or "x" expression) by each term in your divisor (on the left) and write that result on the line directly below your dividend.
4) Subtract the second line from the first line and write your result below.
5) Drop down another term from your dividend into your bottom line.
6) Find how many times the first term of your divisor goes into the first term of your bottom line and write that result on your top line above the dividend, aligned vertically with the term like it.
7) Repeat steps #3-6 until the first term of your divisor cannot go into the first term of your bottom line result anymore. This bottom line expression is your remainder.
8) Your answer is your top line result plus your remainder over the divisor.

It breaks down a division problem into a series of easier steps. As in all division problems, one number, called the dividend, is divided by another, called the divisor, producing a result called the quotient. It enables computations involving arbitrarily large numbers to be performed by following a series of simple steps. The abbreviated form of long division is called short division, which is almost always used instead of long division when the divisor has only one digit. Chunking (also known as the partial quotients method or the hangman method) is a less-efficient form of long division which may be easier to understand.

Inexpensive calculators and computers have become the most common way to solve division problems, eliminating a traditional mathematical exercise, and decreasing the educational opportunity to show how to do so by paper and pencil techniques. (Internally, those devices use one of a variety of division algorithms). In the United States, long division has been especially targeted for de-emphasis, or even elimination from the school curriculum, by reform mathematics, though traditionally introduced in the 4th or 5th grades.
