On a British cruise ship, there is a betting pool wherein passengers try to correctly guess the number of miles the ship will travel that day, within ten miles above ("high field") or below ("low field") the captain's own guess.
On a stormy day, a passenger named William Botibol bids two hundred pounds on "low field", hoping the weather will significantly slow down the ship. He is gambling largely with money he doesn't have (it represents years of his and his wife's savings), but he views it as worth the risk.
The next morning, Botibol wakes up to find the sky is clear and the ship is moving very fast to make up for lost time. Horrified, he decides that to slow down the ship he will jump overboard, dressed as if for tennis so he can easily swim. This way, the ship will have to stop and turn around to rescue him.
Dip in the Pool is a Japanese pop duo consisting of Miyako Koda (voices) and Tatsuji Kimura (keyboards), who have made eight albums. Their UK album Silence was released through Rough Trade Records in 1986. Their track "Izmir" is the ending music of the PlayStation game, Omega Boost. Koda is also an actress and has appeared in "Fanshî dansu" (Fancy Dance, 1989), "Hakuchi" (1999), and "Kanaria" (2005).

Dr. Ichirō Irabu(伊良部 一郎,Irabu Ichirō) is a fictionalpsychiatrist in a series of short stories by Japanese writer Hideo Okuda, originally published primarily in the literary magazineAll Yomimono from August 2000 to January 2006 and later collected in three tankōbon: In the Pool(イン・ザ・プール,In Za Pūru), Kūchū Buranko(空中ブランコ?, "Flying Trapeze") and Chōchō Senkyo(町長選挙?, "Mayoral Election"). Of these, Kūchū Buranko is particularly acclaimed, having won Okuda the 131st Naoki Prize (given for a book published in the first half of 2004) but, as of January 2011, only In the Pool has been published in English. Works in other media based on the stories include a feature film, television drama, stage play and anime series.
Premise
Ichiro Irabu(伊良部 一郎) is a psychiatrist from the Irabu General Hospital. He is fat and pale skinned, with a fetish for administering injections to patients. An unreasonable and rather immature person, he normally ignores Yamashita's plights while challenging him to mid-air trapeze flying due to his self-proclaimed "light-weightedness." During his student days, he frequently misunderstood his lectures. Treated as a general nuisance at the School of Medicine, he entered pediatrics soon after graduation. However, due to claims of his tantrums and quarrels with child patients, he switched to psychiatry instead. Doubts remain about his actual grades.
The Pool facilitates narrativist role-playing, that is, role-playing which focuses on players as protagonists in thematically charged stories. The game uses an open trait system and conflict resolution instead of task resolution (that is, dice rolls determine whether a character's overall intent is achieved, rather than whether a specific attempted action is successful).
Rules
The Pool is based on a dice pool with several six-sided dice (d6). Every player begins with a die supply of 15d6 which changes during character creation and play.
Character creation
Players define their characters by choosing the characters' motives. These may be attributes and skills like in classic RPGs, but as well archetypes ("greedy businessman"), traits ("depressive"), relationships ("married"), or other stats ("likes Tex-Mex food"). Every of these motives has a value of 1 to 3, which must be bought from the initial die supply of 15d6. The costs are value^2. A motive of 1 would cost one d6, a motive of 2 four d6 and a motive of 3 nine d6. Dice exchanged for motives can't be used during play.
The Pool (later subtitled City of Culture?) is a play written by and starring James Brough and Helen Elizabeth. The plot follows David (Brough), a Londoner who finds himself stranded in Liverpool, where he meets Tina (Elizabeth). David persuades Tina to take the day off work and the two spend a day in the city together. The play is a mixture of verse and prose. Brough and Elizabeth conceived it while appearing at the 2004 Edinburgh Fringe. They returned to perform it at The Gilded Balloon in 2006. It has also been performed at the Arts Theatre in London and the Unity Theatre in Liverpool. A film adaptation directed by David Morrissey premiered at the 2009 London Film Festival and was broadcast on BBC Two on 7 March 2010.
Performance history
The play premiered at the Edinburgh Fringe in 2006, where Brough and Elizabeth won the Fringe First award for new writing. It transferred to the Arts Theatre in London's West End for a limited run at the end of 2006, before a three-day run from 24 to 27 January 2007 at Liverpool's Unity Theatre. It returned to the Arts Theatre for a three-week run from 3 to 21 April 2007, now subtitled City of Culture?
