The original cathedral was in the village of Clogher in County Tyrone, site of a monastery founded in 454 by St. Macartan, who was appointed bishop by St. Patrick in the 5th century. Following the Reformation, Henry VIII confiscated Clogher Cathedral for his Church of Ireland and the Roman Catholic diocese was without a permanent see until 1851 when a decision was made to move to the larger town of Monaghan 32 kilometres south east of Clogher village. The foundation stone of a St Macartan's Cathedral was laid in Monaghan in June 1861. The cathedral was dedicated in August 1892.
Today the diocese has a faithful of over 100,000 parishioners spread across 37 parishes. The current bishop of the Diocese of Clogher is the Most Reverend Liam McDaid, appointed on 6 May 2010 by Pope Benedict XVI and ordained on Sunday 25 July 2010 in St Macartan's Cathedral in Monaghan.
The Diocese was formed in 1111 at the Synod of Rathbreasail as the see for the Kingdom of Uí Chremthainn. The See was removed to Louth between 1135 and 1197, possibly to consolidate the power of the Bishop over against smaller Sees, before being returned to Clougher. At this time Louth was moved to the Diocese of Armagh, and the Ardstraw part of the diocese given to the Diocese of Derry. Church property that existed at the time of the Reformation, buildings included, was retained by the reformed Church of Ireland, then in the 19th century, at the time of the Disestablishment of the Church, confiscated by the state. Schools, churches and cathedrals were however returned to the Church. The diocese is unique within the Anglican Communion in having two diocesan cathedrals.
The name Clochar refers to something made of stone ('Cloch' is the Irish word for 'stone' and can be anglicised as 'cloch', 'clogh' or 'clough'); probably on the site of the medieval monastery or a nearby ringfort. Archaeological remains from before the 5th century have been found in the vicinity. Clogher is said to have been the location of a gold-covered paganoracle stone named Cermand Cestach. The story goes that "Cloch-Ór (Golden Stone), may have been a ceremonial or oracle stone (see Cenn Cruaich and Omphalos) originally covered in gold sacred to the druids...given to Mac Cairthinn by an old pagan noble (Cairpre, the father of St Tigernach of Clones), who had harassed him in every possible way until the saint's patient love won the local ruler to the faith." The stone is recorded as being "a curiosity in the porch of the Cathedral of Clogher" in the time of AnnalistCathal Maguire of Fermanagh in the late 15th century. Tighernach of Clones, later succeeded St. Mac Cairthinn as Bishop of Clogher.
Clogher (named after the diocese of Clogher) is a barony in County Tyrone, Northern Ireland. It is bordered by four other baronies in Northern Ireland: Omagh East to the north; Dungannon Lower to the east; Magherastephana to the south; and Tirkennedy to the south-west. It also borders two baronies in the Republic of Ireland: Trough and Monaghan both to the south-east.
History
The barony of Clogher was a territory formerly known as Kinel Ferady, an anglicisation of a branch of the Cenél nEóghain, the Cenél Fearadhaigh, meaning kindred/descendants of Ferry. This territory was divided into two ancient districts.
The Mac Cathmhaoil (English:McCaul, Campbell, MacCawell, MacCall) were the leading sept of the Cenél Fearadhaigh, and one of the seven powerful septs supporting O'Neill. The Maolgeimridh (English: Mulgomery, Montgomery) and Maolpadraig (English: Mulpatrick, Kilpatrick) septs are recorded as being in possession of the two districts of the Cenél Fearadhaigh at one stage.

Mass rocks in Clontibret
A number of Mass rocks and gardens were recorded in a survey carried out in 1957 in the Roman Catholic Diocese of Clogher in Ireland. This survey was undertaken by Rev P O'Gallachair on behalf of the Clogher Diocese, a Roman Catholic diocese which spans the Republic of Ireland and Northern Ireland. The survey records three 'Mass rocks' and two 'Mass gardens'. During the time of the Penal Laws, Catholic religious observances were suppressed, and these remote sites were used as secret places of worship.
