Virgin Prunes perform 'Theme for Thought' on The Late Late Show.
Following a panel discussion on the visit of Pope John Paul ll to Ireland, Gay Byrne introduces the post-punk band Virgin Prunes.
They are unique and different, there is no other group in the business doing what they’re doing at the moment, what exactly they’re doing I’m not too sure mind you, but there’s nobody else doing it and you have to make up your own mind.
Virgin Prunes perform ‘Theme for Thought’, the lyrics of which include a quote from ‘The Ballad of Reading Gaol’ by Oscar Wilde.
The band consists of vocalists Gavin Friday (Fionan Harvey) and Guggi (Derek Rowen), bassist Strongman (Trevor Rowan) guitarist Dik (Dick Evans) and drummer Pod (Anthony Murphy). Two women smoking cigarettes and drinking wine are seated at a table beside the band.
Following the performance, the sixth member of Virigin Prunes, Dave-iD Busaras (David Scott Watson) presents Gay Byrne with a box of chocolates.
Before distributing bars of chocolate to members of the audience he says,
We’ll be playing soon for people to hear us and we hoped you enjoyed yourself.
The members of Virgin Prunes belong to an imaginary place called ‘Lypton Village’. The residents are a collection of friends who all hold a different view of life. Citizens of Lypton Village are christened with new names. Other inhabitants of Lypton Village include U2 members Bono (Paul Hewson) and the Edge (Dave Evans).
‘Theme For Thought’ appears on the Virgin Prunes 1982 album ‘...If I Die, I Die’.
This episode of ‘The Late Late Show’ was broadcast on 6 October 1979.

"Sweet Home Under White Clouds" is a clip from the, 'Sons Find Devils - A Live Retrospective 1981-1983' VHS, released [1986] on Ikon, a sister video label of Factory. Ikon was founded in June 1980 as a video arm for the label with the intention of filming the label's bands for potential broadcast, and from November 1981, for releasing and distributing videos (e.g. Doublevision).
Lead by Malcolm Whitehead alone at first, he was later joined by Brian Nicholson (1982), Linda Dutton and Tim Chambers.
Ikon became independent in 1989 but went down along with Factory in 1992.
Virgin Prunes formed mid-1977 in Dublin, for a time the Virgin Prunes were "the most overtly subversive rock group ever to come out of the genre" (Mark Prendergast, "Irish Rock"). Their reputation was built on their outrageous stage performances and supported by a wayward and individual collection of record releases.
Singer's, Gavin Friday, and Guggi, along with third Vocalist, Dave-iD Busaras, Guitarist, Dik Evans, Bassist, Strongman ,and Drummer, Pod, released their first single in 1980. Pod soon left to be replaced by Haa-Lacka Binttii, who left around a year later, to be replaced in turn by, Mary D'Nellon.
In 1984, both Guggi and Dik left the band and the music business. Mary D'Nellon took over guitar duties and Pod returned as the band's drummer. The Virgin Prunes started to record the album Sons Find Devils, which has never been released.
1985 saw the release of a retrospective video (confusingly titled Sons Find Devils, despite having no connection with the still unreleased album) and a compilation album of rarities (Over the Rainbow).
The band toured as a four-piece and finally released a new album, The Moon Looked Down and Laughed, in the summer of 1986. Gavin Friday left the group in November 1986 to pursue a solo career, effectively ending the group. This was formally confirmed by a short comment at the bottom of the sleeve of a live album, The Hidden Lie, released in 1987. D'Nellon, Strongman and Busaras went on to record and perform as The Prunes.
U2 Connection:
Members of the Virgin Prunes and U2 grew up in Dublin together. As teenagers, they formed a society called the Lypton Village – a group of like-minded people united in their unease at the conventions of contemporary suburban life. Members were given Village names – Gavin Friday, Guggi, Pod, Bono Vox, The Edge – to represent their “true” character.
Around 1977, two bands emerged from the general vibe of the Lypton Village. One went through several name changes (The Hype, Feedback) before settling on U2. The other named itself the Virgin Prunes. The two bands played together on several occasions. Gavin and Bono wrote different songs with the same titles (Boy/Girl and Exit being two examples).
In terms of musical, lyrical and philosophical approach, however, the two bands were about as far apart as could be. They deliberately opted for a Bowie/Iggy relationship, with one band aiming for commercial acceptance and the other aiming to shock and alienate their audience. The relationship was thus more than that of two bands whose members had grown up together. It’s almost as though U2 and the Virgin Prunes were two sides of the same coin, with the coin itself (or “meta-group”, if you’d like a more intellectual and less laboured comparison) being the Lypton Village.
The connections in human terms are that U2’s The Edge (David Evans) is the younger brother of the Virgin Prunes’ Dik (Richard Evans). In the early days of both bands the line-ups were quite fluid and Dik played guitar for Feedback for a while. The young boy on the U2 album covers Boy and War is Peter Rowan, the younger brother of Guggi (Derek Rowan) and Strongman (Trevor Rowan) of the Virgin Prunes. Pod, the Virgin Prunes’ drummer, has acted as a roadie for U2.
Since the Virgin Prunes disbanded in 1986, Gavin Friday and Bono have worked together on projects such as the soundtrack to the film In the Name of the Father and the Irish Hospice Foundation’s Peter and the Wolf. Gavin has also provided backing vocals on U2’s cover of Satellite of Love and has been credited on most recent U2 albums and tours. The connections keep resurfacing – even Maurice “The Man” Seezer, Gavin’s early collaborator, is related to the Rowans on his grandfather’s side.

Virgin Prunes was an experimental post-punk band from Dublin, Ireland. The band was formed in 1977 and disbanded in 1986 after the departure of member Gavin Friday.
Known for its outrageous and controversial stage performances led by the bands' theatrical singer/songwriter Friday, they first began playing small shows in Dublin gaining them a cult audience and ridicule from the culturally conservative community. With an audience the band were able to issue their first single in 1980, the independently-produced Twenty Tens (I've Been Smoking All Night), which led to a deal with the Rough Trade Records.
Gavin Friday and Guggi, along with third vocalist 'Dave-iD Busaras' (David Scott Watson), guitarist Dik Evans (brother of U2's The Edge), bassist Strongman (Trevor Rowan, brother of Guggi) and drummer Pod (Anthony Murphy), completed the original lineup. Soon after the release of their first single the bands drummer, Pod, left the group and was replaced by Haa-Lacka Binttii (aka Bintii, aka Princess Tinymeat, neé Daniel Figgis), who was in turn replaced by drummer Mary D'Nellon.
1981 to 1982 would see the band release many innovative and creative projects such as A New Form of Beauty, a project that contained four chapters, each on a different format.
In 1982 the Virgin Prunes released their debut album ...If I Die, I Die. Heresie, a French box-set, was also released. The box-set contained two 10 inch records, one with studio recordings from just before the "If I Die I Die" sessions and one with a registration of a Paris concert .
In 1984 both Guggi and Dik Evans, unhappy with the music business, left the band. This forced drummer, Mary D'Nellon to take up the guitar and allowed Pod to return as the band's drummer. The Virgin Prunes started to record the album Sons Find Devils, which has never been released.
In 1985, confusingly enough, a retrospective video titled Sons Find Devils was released; this video had nothing to do with the unreleased album of the same name. Later that same year, Over the Rainbow, a compilation of rarities, was also released.
In the summer of 1986 the band, now a four-piece recording music written for Sons Find Devils, finally released a new album, The Moon Looked Down and Laughed. Also that year front man Gavin Friday left the group. His departure was confirmed in the liner notes of the band's 1987 live album The Hidden Lie which contained a short statement confirming the band's break-up.

Lyrics
I don't know
Man, I just got here
You got me thinking
I'm about to leave
Some say maybe tomorrow
New direction, hello
What I know know know
What I know know know
I walk tall
I walk in the wild wind
I love to stare
I love to watch myself grow
Someday, maybe tomorrow
New direction, hello
Well I know know know
Well I know know know
Street mission
Street mission
Street mission
Street mission
And I'm promising nothing
I'm just living a smile
I casually arrange it
I know... well I know know know
Street mission
Street mission
Street mission
Street mission
I walk tall
I walk in the wild wind
I live an image
Of plastic and gold
Some say maybe tomorrow
A resurrection, hello
Well I know know know
Well I know know know
Well I know know know
Well I know know know
Oh...
Oh...
Oh... i need something
I need someone
I need you
Oh... i've got something
I've got someone
I've got you
Street mission
Street mission
Street mission

Some say maybe tomorrow
New direction, hello
What I know know know
What I know know know
I walk tall
I walk in the wild wind
I love to stare
I love to watch myself grow
Someday, maybe tomorrow
New direction, hello
Well I know know know
Well I know know know
Street mission
Street mission
Street mission
Street mission
And I'm promising nothing
I'm just living a smile
I casually arrange it
I know... well I know know know
Street mission
Street mission
Street mission
Street mission
I walk tall
I walk in the wild wind
I live an image
Of plastic and gold
Some say maybe tomorrow
A resurrection, hello
Well I know know know
Well I know know know
Well I know know know
Well I know know know
Oh...
Oh...
Oh... i need something
I need someone
I need you
Oh... i've got something
I've got someone
I've got you
Street mission
Street mission
Street mission
Good night
