Digital public square (DPS) is a term that refers to a user-driven website that relies upon user-generated content (UGC), created by a group of people with a common interest in a specific community. At its most basic, a digital public square represents an evolution in how people discover, read and share news, information and content. Users/content providers share the common goal of informing and becoming more informed about a shared geographic community or a community of ideas.
Modeled after the traditional “public square” where townspeople would gather to exchange views, a digital public square provides a virtual platform for the exploration of issues and the sharing of ideas, creativity and opinions while developing solutions to a community's challenges. A thriving digital public square has a rich content stream that may include video footage of community events and an interactive community record of nonprofit news and resources. The DPS offers a platform for dialogue and encourages people to connect in a virtual setting to establish relationships that can effect social change.
A town square is an open public space commonly found in the heart of a traditional town used for community gatherings. Other names for town square are civic center, city square, urban square, market square, public square, piazza, plaza, and town green.
Most town squares are hardscapes suitable for open markets, musicconcerts, political rallies, and other events that require firm ground. Being centrally located, town squares are usually surrounded by small shops such as bakeries, meat markets, cheese stores, and clothing stores. At their center is often a fountain, well, monument, or statue. Many of those with fountains are actually called fountain square.
Urban planning
In urban planning, a city square or urban square is a planned open area in a city, usually or originally rectangular in shape.
75 Public Square is a high-rise office building on Public Square in downtownCleveland, Ohio. It was designed by the Cleveland architectural firm of Hubbell & Benes and was completed in 1915. It served as the headquarters for the Cleveland Electric Illuminating Company until the construction of the adjacent 55 Public Square in 1958. The building also abuts Cleveland's historic Old Stone Church. In 2014, the Millenia Companies, planning to convert the building into apartments, purchased the building for $4 million.
While technology has brought incredible benefits and conveniences into our lives, it also has led to countless unintended consequences and deep ethical challenges that push us to consider how to live out our faith in a technological society.
The Ethics and Religious Liberty Commission is launching a new research project called the “Digital Public Square.” This project will provide resources to help you navigate this digital age and think through complex and crucial ethical challenges with biblical wisdom and insight.

Is Twitter the Digital Town Square?
Is Twitter (or other social media) really the digital town square? I very much think the world would be better were that not the case, so lets explore that question a bit.

The Digital Public Square and Christian Community - Jeffrey Bilbro
Fact-checking and "diversifying your news feed" are two common suggestions for reducing polarization, but neither solution can address the true root of polarization and tribalism: a lack of communal belonging. Jeffrey Bilbro explains how true change comes not from top-down adjustments to our digital ecosystem, but from bottom-up reinvigoration of our neighborhoods and local political engagement!
This presentation took place at the American Values Coalition's "Advocate the Truth" Pastors Workshop at Redeemer Christian Church in Amarillo, TX.
