A digital signal is a signal that represents a sequence of discrete values. A logic signal is a digital signal with only two possible values, and describes an arbitrary bit stream. Other types of digital signals can represent three-valued logic or higher valued logics.
A digital signal is a physical quantity that is alternating between a discrete set of waveforms. Alternatively, a digital signal may be considered to be the sequence of codes represented by such a physical quantity. The physical quantity may be the alternating current or voltage of an electrical signal, the light intensity of an optical signal, the signal strength of a radio signal or acoustic signal, the magnetization of a magnetic storage media, et cetera. Digital signals are present in all digital electronics, notably computing equipment and data transmission.
With digital signals, system noise, provided it is not too great, will not change the quantification whereas with signals handled using analog processing, noise always degrades the operation to some degree.
While analog transmission is the transfer of a continuously varying analog signal over an analog channel, digital communications is the transfer of discrete messages over a digital or an analog channel. The messages are either represented by a sequence of pulses by means of a line code (baseband transmission), or by a limited set of continuously varying wave forms (passband transmission), using a digital modulation method. The passband modulation and corresponding demodulation (also known as detection) is carried out by modem equipment. According to the most common definition of digital signal, both baseband and passband signals representing bit-streams are considered as digital transmission, while an alternative definition only considers the baseband signal as digital, and passband transmission of digital data as a form of digital-to-analog conversion.
Although digital representations are the subject matter of discrete mathematics, the information represented can be either discrete, such as numbers and letters, or it can be continuous, such as sounds, images, and other measurements.
The word digital comes from the same source as the words digit and digitus (the Latin word for finger), as fingers are often used for discrete counting. Mathematician George Stibitz of Bell Telephone Laboratories used the word digital in reference to the fast electric pulses emitted by a device designed to aim and fire anti-aircraft guns in 1942. The term is most commonly used in computing and electronics, especially where real-world information is converted to binary numeric form as in digital audio and digital photography.

TOPIC 2 : Data Transmission
Data is frequently transferred from one device to another. The two
devices could be in the same building or thousands of kilometres away.
Irrespective of the distance travelled, the transmission of data needs to be
considered with respect to:
How the data is transmitted, how can errors following transmission be detected and can the data be recovered and the role of encryption to make sure data that falls into the wrong hands can’t be used.
It is also important to consider ways of checking for errors in data once it
has been entered into a computer.

It is also important to consider ways of checking for errors in data once it
has been entered into a computer.
Data that is sent over long distances is usually broken up into smaller parts known as data packets.

Difference between analog and digital signals are covered in this video in a detailed way.
Analog and Digital signals are types of signals that carry information. The major difference between analog and digital is that analog signals are continuous signals, while digital signals are discrete signals.
Some key differences between analog and digital signals are given below:
Analog Signals:
1. Represented by sine waves.
2. Continuous range of values.
3. Only be used in analog devices.
4. Examples: Human voice, natural sound, analog electronic devices.
Digital Signals:
1. Represented by square waves.
2. Discontinuous values.
3. Suited for digital electronics like computers, mobiles and more.
4. Examples: Computers, optical drives, and other electronic devices.

Analog vs Digital vs Discrete vs Continuous Signals - https://youtu.be/WQyAPvnoLK4
