Desmond Dekker & The Aces – Israelites (Official Lyrics Video)
Between 1967 and 1975, Desmond Dekker, Jamaica’s first recording superstar, graced the UK pop charts on no less than 7 occasions.
His ground-breaking hit, ‘Israelites’, was the first Jamaican-produced song to top the UK chart in April 1969.
Its popularity led to a reggae explosion that took the genre into the mainstream and opened the way for the likes of Bob Marley, Jimmy Cliff, and Toots & The Maytals to follow.
Consequently, despite his tragic death over decade ago this year, he remains one of a handful of reggae artists who are readily identified with the genre.
And now, over half a century since 'Israelites' forever changed the sound of popular music, it is celebrated once more with a brand new lyrics video.

Desmond Dekker & The Aces - 007 (Official Music Video)
In the summer of 1967, Desmond Dekker & the Aces’ rude boy anthem, ‘007’ became one of the first Jamaican-produced recordings to breach the UK’s national Pop Singles charts; its unexpected international success prompting an urgent need for material to promote the 7” single.
Consequently, Graeme Goodall, MD of Doctor Bird Records, the company behind its British release, hastily secured the services of respected Jamaican director, Perry Henzell, who wasted little time in filming the group live on stage and in the streets of island’s capital before editing the resultant footage and rushing it to the UK, where on the evening on 3 August, it was aired it on the BBC’s hugely popular ‘Top Of The Pops’ TV show.

Desmond Dekker & The Aces 'It Miek' (official audio)
Official audio for Desmond Dekker & the Aces' 1969 smash, 'It Miek'
A follow-up to the UK Number One, 'Israelites', 'It Miek' first saw issue as 'A It Mek’, a Dekker-penned original song that had been inspired by the antics of a rowdy younger sister.
The original version, produced by legendary Beverley's Records boss, Leslie Kong, was deemed by the BBC to be ‘too raw’ for radio play, so was remixed by noted sound engineer, Graeme Goodall, who also overdubbed horns, giving the track a polished feel.
The result was another significant UK hit for Desmond and the Aces, with the single breaching the pop listings in June before peaking at Number 7 on 22 July 1969.

ISRAELITES LYRICS:
Get up in the morning, slaving for bread, sir
So that every mouth can be fed
Poor, me Israelites
Get up in the morning, slaving for bread, sir
So that every mouth can be fed
Poor, me Israelites
My wife and my kids, they packed up and leave me
Darling, she said, I was yours to receive
Poor, me Israelites
Shirt them a-tear up, trousers a go
I don't want to end up like Bonnie and Clyde
Poor, me Israelites
After a storm there must be a calm
They catch me in the farm
You sound your alarm
Poor, me Israelites
I said I get up in the morning, slaving for bread, sir
So that every mouth can be fed
Poor, me Israelites
I said my wife and my kids, they are packed up and leave me
Darling, she said, I was yours to receive
Poor, me Israelites
Look me shirts them a-tear up, trousers a go
I don't want to end up like Bonnie and Clyde
Poor, me Israelites
After a storm there must be a calm
They catch me in the farm
You sound your alarm
Poor, me Israelites
Poor me Israelites, poor me Israelites, poor me Israelites

Notable for being one of the earliest promotional music films ever to be created in Jamaica specifically for a global audience, it now not only provides a truly fascinating glimpse of Desmond & the Aces in action, but also of Kingston street life back in the mid-Sixties.

Official audio for Desmond's Dekker seminal version of Jimmy Cliff's anthemic song, which reached number 2 in the UK charts on 3 October 1970.
the recording's rhythm track was produced in Jamaica by leading hit-maker Leslie Kong, with vocal and horn overdubs arranged by British music legend, Vic Keary at his famed Chalk Farm studio in London.
The song provided the title for Desmond's best-selling album, released by Trojan Records soon after the record punctured the British charts on 22 August 1970.
it was also recorded that year by the singer's Trojan label-mate, Jimmy Cliff, whose version failed to chart, but featured in the Jamaican cult movie, "The Harder They Come", and later "Speed 2: Cruise Control", Will Smith's "Hitch" and the 2012 Aardman Animation film, "The Pirates! In an Adventure with Scientists!".
Desmond's more polished version was also used in the soundtrack of the 2010 British film, "Made in Dagenham" and more recently featured in the acclaimed documentary, "Rudeboy: The Story of Trojan Records" (from 2018).
Subsequent versions of the song include renderings by The Cimarons, Italian pop singer Sabrina (Sabrina Salerno), Stiff Little Fingers, French singer Johnny Hallyday and by Samuel E. Wright (as Sebastian the crab) in the motion picture, "The Little Mermaid".

YOU CAN GET IT IF YOU REALLY WANT LYRICS

You can get it if you really want
You can get it if you really want
You can get it if you really want
But you must try, try and try, try and try
You'll succeed at last, yeah
Persecution you must bear
Win or lose you've got to get your share
You’ve got your mind set on a dream
You can get it, though hard it may seem now
You can get it if you really want
You can get it if you really want
You can get it if you really want, yeah
But you must try, try and try, try and try
You'll succeed at last
Don’t you know it
Listen, Rome was not built in a day
Opposition will come your way
But the hotter the battle, you see
Is the sweeter the victory now
You can get it if you really want
You can get it if you really want
You can get it if you really want
But you must try, try and try, try and try
You'll succeed at last
Well, you can get it if you really want
You can get it if you really want
You can get it if you really want
But you must try, try and try, try and try
You'll succeed at last
You can get it if you really want

You can get it if you really want
Don’t I show it
You can get it if you really want

Written by Desmond Dacres & Leslie Kong
You think I never see you when you jump over the wall
You think I never see you when you accidentally fall
Me said, ah it mek, make you pop your bitter gall
Ah it mek, while you accidently fall
Ah it mek, hear she crying for ice water
Ah, ah, ah
Hey hey
I check you out and you're cool, girl
I dig you out and you're cool, girl
Rock it to me children
I told you once and I told you twice
Sweet nanny goat a go run him belly good
Me said, ah it mek, make you pop your bitter gall
Ah it mek, while you accidently fall
Ah it mek, hear she crying for ice water

Are Hebrew Israelites Real Jews?
Hebrew Israelism originated as a theology during the transatlantic slave trade, when enslaved Africans developed an identification with the biblical story of the Jews enslaved in Egypt.
While many Hebrew Israelite communities observe their beliefs peacefully, radical Hebrew Israelites are a group notorious for their hateful and antisemitic views. Some radicals, like Frank S. Cherry, have worked hard to spread dangerous rhetoric and controversial beliefs to create a hateful narrative against Jewish people.
As these antisemitic views have spread, so has a rift between two communities that should have a strong bond over shared histories, but are instead divided and afraid.

The Origins of the Israelites: Episode 3
Subscribe to our channel! https://bit.ly/2RlSRyj
This episode we finally get to explore the Israelites. Who were they? Where did they come from? This episode examines the material remains of Late Bronze Age Israel, which posits that they were an egalitarian farming and pastoralist society living in the central hill country of Canaan. Evidence that will be examined includes the earliest mention of the Israelites in the archaeological record: the Merneptah Stele. This episode also dispels a common theory that the mysterious Habiru, a people mentioned in the Amarna letters, are one and the same with the Hebrews.

The Origins of the Israelites
In the first episode of our series on Ancient Israel and also Judah we are joined by Dr. Aren Maeir who guides us into the controversial and heavily debated origin or origins of the Ancient Israelites.
He discusses the scholarship on the subject such as:
Did the Israelites develop out of the Canaanite populations?
Did they migrate in over time? If so, then from where?
Or is the answer both? Did natives and migrants eventually come together to form a distinctly different group?
We also talk archaeology, ancient DNA, dietary laws, primary sources for the earliest evidence of the Israelites outside of the Bible and so very much more.
We also discuss thought provoking topics such as:
Is the term Israel derived from a pagan Canaanite deity?
How should we view the Old Testament when stu...

Black Hebrew Israelites vs. Israel
The Beth Israel community is made of up African Americans who moved to Israel in the 1970s. They believe they are descendants of the lost tribes of Israel that fled in the 6th century BCE from Babylon after the deconstruction of the First Temple. This community believes a site near the Dead Sea tells us where the biblical Jerusalem once stood, and they are fighting for this site to be recognized by the government. Our Shelby Weiner has the story.

ISRAELITES LYRICS:
Get up in the morning, slaving for bread, sir
So that every mouth can be fed
Poor, me Israelites
Get up in the morning, slaving for bread, sir
So that every mouth can be fed
Poor, me Israelites
My wife and my kids, they packed up and leave me
Darling, she said, I was yours to receive
Poor, me Israelites
Shirt them a-tear up, trousers a go
I don't want to end up like Bonnie and Clyde
Poor, me Israelites
After a storm there must be a calm
They catch me in the farm
You sound your alarm
Poor, me Israelites
I said I get up in the morning, slaving for bread, sir
So that every mouth can be fed
Poor, me Israelites
I said my wife and my kids, they are packed up and leave me
Darling, she said, I was yours to receive
Poor, me Israelites
Look me shirts them a-tear up, trousers a go
I don't want to end up like Bonnie and Clyde
Poor, me Israelites

This episode also dispels a common theory that the mysterious Habiru, a people mentioned in the Amarna letters, are one and the same with the Hebrews.

To understand the current war in Gaza, you have learn about the founding of the state of Israel and what that meant for the Palestinians who had been living there. Before Benjamin Netanyahu or Hamas, there was Zionism, the Balfour Declaration and the Nakba. This is how Israel was created.

How should we view the Old Testament when studying history?
Can we use both the term Israelite and Hebrew interchangeably?
But as we leave off Dr. Maeir reminds us to be cautious of how we use results from ancient DNA studies while reminding us how often the results get misconstrued.
