Bronze Age Armor of Europe | Ancient History Documentary
When did metal armour first emerge in Europe? Where was it first developed? What about the first metal helmets and shields? And what can all this armour tell us about its users and the societies they came from?
The Dendra Panoply of Mycenaean Greece is famous, as is the boar's tusk helmet. But bronze armour was worn right across Europe and warriors defended themselves with circular bronze shields and bronze helmets.
This is the story of European Bronze Age armour.

Mycenaean Warrior in Dendra Armor
Mycenaean warrior in classical bronze armor and a helmet made of boar's tusks found in the Dendra.
The armor consisted of 15 pieces and weighed 18 kg. Despite expectations, bronze plates were relatively thin.
Boar tusks were sewn onto the leather and it is estimated that 40-50 boars were killed to create one helmet.
The primary weapon of the Mycenaeans was a spear that measured 3 meters (scaled down for the image).
Other popular weapons were axes and clubs. Rarely bronze swords.
Mycenaeans wore shields of various shapes made of bronze or wood and ox hide.
Chariots with two horses and two man were used for fighting and later as a means of transport.
I found a reference to the fact that the Mycenaean army used riders on horseback, but like many other things from the Bronze Age, the in...

I found a reference to the fact that the Mycenaean army used riders on horseback, but like many other things from the Bronze Age, the information is fragmentary for us...

What do you think is more important in war - to kill as many enemies as possible or to stay alive? Logic says to kill as many enemies as possible, but your instincts will make you worry about your own safety first. Therefore, throughout history, people have gone to great lengths to protect themselves in battle, creating many unique and unusual pieces of armor.
For example, the earliest known armor used by humans was made from animal skins and was used as far back as 40,000 years ago. The hides were usually treated with tannins or other natural substances to make them more durable and resistant to water. Prehistoric hunters usually wore this type of armor to protect themselves from animal attacks and other dangers.
But when people began to fight other people, the hides alone were no longer enough. Spears and arrows easily pierced rudemtary armor. The man had to think up other ways to protect himself. In the absence of easy-to-melt metals, some isolated nations came up with such sophisticated armor that even the game "Skyrim" armor designer could envy their imagination.
Now we'll tell you how people on various islands used to make helmets out of fish and why rifles couldn't even pierce body armor made of coins by Alaskan people. And what armor is considered the pinnacle of evolution?
