Introduction to Democritus
In this lecture we look at Democritus, the father of the philosophical doctrine known as atomism. Along with investigating his proposal that the universe is composed of atoms and void, we discuss the influence which atomism had on subsequent thinkers, as well as look at Democritus' epidemiological and ethical ideas.

Democritus and Leucippus | The Atomists of Presocratics Philosophy
In Presocratics philosophy, Democritus and Leucippus are the founders of the Ancient Atomism school of Ancient Greek philosophy. There is some debate as to whether Leucippus even existed or whether Democritus of Abdera is the only founder of this Presocratic philosophy school but whatever the historical reality there is a potency to the school of Ancient Atomism whereby their worldview is closer to the modern scientific outlook than any other among the ancients. Democritus tells us that sweetness bitterness and warmth are all conventions and that the reality is atoms and void. The Democritus atomic theory is not so impressive as the nature of it -- unlike the similar systems of Empedocles and Anaxagoras, the atomic theory of Democritus and Leucippus is devoid of projections of human qualit...

The Philosophy Of Democritus And The Atomists
The Presocratic philosopher Democritus couldn't help but laugh at the follies of mankind, this propensity would gain him the moniker "the laughing philosopher." Join me in discovering perhaps the most profound philosopher prior to Pericelan Greece. The Atomic theory of matter that was propounded by the Atomists still, to this day, remains the greatest feat of reason of that era.

A Conversation with Democritus | Ben Moore | TEDxZurich
2500 years ago the Greece and the Mediterranean islands must have been a plentiful and lush environment that enabled time to think. Democritus (and others) realized the world around them was understandable without invoking gods. He speculated that everything was made of tiny 'atomos' (he called them), particles so small that you couldn't see them. He was the first to state that the Milky Way was made of stars like our sun, that the universe contained many planets, some with life, others barren and empty. Ben Moore examines how it may have been possible for Democritus to know all this and Democritus' role in uncovering this complex phenomenon that is now widely understood by philosophy and science.

How do we know what matter is made of? The quest for the atom has been a long one, beginning 2,400 years ago with the work of a Greek philosopher and later continued by a Quaker and a few Nobel Prize-winning scientists. Theresa Doud details the history of atomic theory.

DEMOCRITUS, Atoms and Void - History of Philosophy with Prof. Footy
We examine Democritus' theory of atomism. We look at how his theory accounts for the emergence of everything that is and what consequences Democritus' theory had on his belief on what we can know with certainty.

Philosophy in the Tragic Age of the Greeks is one of the more obscure texts in Friedrich Nietzsche’s corpus. There are many good reasons for this: it is unfinished, and ends abruptly; it was never published; and it concerns subject matter that is not as immediately accessible as Nietzsche’s more popular writings. You will not find his major concepts in this work – such as the will to power, or the critique of metaphysics - except insofar as those id...

He enjoys communicating science to the public through different media, including writing, music and art. Ben has recently opened the world’s first cosmic concept store in Zurich called Da Draussen.

You will not find his major concepts in this work – such as the will to power, or the critique of metaphysics - except insofar as those ideas appear in the background, inchoate, unnamed… not yet fully formed. In Nietzsche’s interpretation of the Pre-Platonic philosophers of Ancient Greece, we find the starting place for his later philosophical career. The inspiration for many of those great ideas, can arguably be found in his exegesis of these extraordinary figures from the Hellenic world, from the 6th to the 4th century BC. In this series we’ll consider Nietzsche’s view of Thales, Anaximander, Heraclitus, Parmenides, Anaxagoras, Empedocles & Democritus.
