Will Germany's political 'firewall' against the far-right AfD hold? | DW News
The far-right Alternative for Germany party won Sunday's vote in the eastern state of Thuringia - where it's considered by German intelligence to be an extremist organization that threatens democracy. It's the first time in modern German history that a far-right party has come in first in a state election.
The AfD won almost a third of votes in Thuringia and came a close second in the nearby state of Saxony. But its chances of governing remain slim, as all other parties refuse to co-operate with it. Speaking after the results were announced..
German Chancellor Olaf Scholz urged mainstream political parties to form coalitions "without right-wing extremists."

A new left-wing populist party has performed very well in the German state elections. It's called the Sahra Wagenknecht Alliance, named after its founder. The party isn't even a year old, but came third in both Thuringia and Saxony. It combines a left-wing economic policy with an agenda to cut immigration and oppose Germany's support for Ukraine. “Going Down A VERY Dangerous Route” | Corbyn Forms Alliance With Pro-Gaza Independent MPs
Former Labour leader Jeremy Corbyn is forming a parliamentary alliance with four pro-Gaza independent MPs.
His new Commons group is dubbed the Independent Alliance parliamentary group, which is set to be the fifth largest grouping in the chamber, with the same number of MPs as Reform UK and the DUP.
Mr Corbyn and his allies hope to press the Government on issues including austerity and inequality as well as the war in Gaza.
Jeremy Kyle is joined by Talk International Editor Isabel Oakeshott to discuss the story further.
Isabel: “I don’t think that we should allow political parties whose primary focus is on foreign affairs.”

STORYLINE:
In a vote that promises to realign Poland's political landscape, a left-wing party with roots in Poland's former communist regime won a clear majority in parliamentary elections on Sunday.
The elections marked the political extinction of Solidarity, which failed to get any seats according to two separate exit polls.
The Democratic Left Alliance and its small ally, the Labor Union, is expected to have an outright majority in the 460-seat Sejm, the parliament's dominant chamber.
Early results showed the Democratic Left had won 44.1 percent of the vote, representing 231 seats.
Solidarity, which needed eight per cent to stay in parliament, won just 4.5 percent according to one poll.
Party leader and the next Prime Minister Leszek Miller, 55, a former Politburo member who has transformed himself into a savvy social democrat has already named his choices for top Cabinet posts.
Miller has pledged to keep Poland, a country of 39 million sandwiched between Germany and the former Soviet Union, firmly in the NATO camp which it joined in 1999.
He also promised to keep Poland on course for European Union membership.
The results were a stunning blow for the Solidarity bloc, which led the last government but has lost support with high-level defections, infighting, political scandals and rising unemployment.
The Solidarity bloc was formed as political party after the fall of communism from the revered movement that toppled the communist regime.
"We have taken political risk and that costs," said Jerzy Buzek, the outgoing Solidarity prime minister. "This is a heavy blow for us."
While the Solidarity government brought Poland into NATO and made impressive economic and administrative reforms, it also made many Poles insecure with the rapid pace of change and unemployment that has soared to 16 percent.
A looming budget deficit further undermined the government's dim election chances, and will present the next Cabinet with the unsavory chore of imposing an austerity plan likely to be unpopular.
Turnout, estimated at 43 per cent, appeared low reflecting a lackluster campaign overshadowed by the horrific terrorist attacks September 11 in New York and Washington.
