Delta is an American versatile family of expendable launch systems that has provided space launch capability in the United States since 1960. There have been more than 300 Delta rockets launched, with a 95% success rate. Two Delta launch systems –Delta II and Delta IV– are still in use, though the Delta II will soon be retired. Delta rockets are currently manufactured and launched by the United Launch Alliance.
Delta origins
The original Delta rockets used a modified version of the PGM-17 Thor, the first ballistic missile deployed by the United States Air Force, as their first stage. The Thor had been designed in the mid-1950s to reach Moscow from bases in Britain or similar allied nations, and the first wholly successful Thor launch had occurred in September 1957. Subsequent satellite and space probe flights soon followed, using a Thor first stage with several different upper stages. The fourth upper stage used on the Thor was the Thor "Delta," delta being the fourth letter of the Greek alphabet. Eventually the entire Thor-Delta launch vehicle came to be called simply, "Delta."
Delta II is an American space launch system, originally designed and built by McDonnell Douglas. Delta II is part of the Delta rocket family and entered service in 1989. Delta II vehicles included the Delta 6000, and two Delta 7000 variants ("Light" and "Heavy").
History
In the early 1980s, all United States expendable launch vehicles were planned to be phased out in favor of the Space Shuttle, which would be responsible for all government and commercial launches. Production of Delta, Atlas-Centaur, and Titan 34D had ended. The Challenger disaster of 1986 and the subsequent halt of Shuttle operations changed this policy, and President Ronald Reagan announced in December of that year that the Space Shuttle would no longer launch commercial payloads, and NASA would seek to purchase launches on expendable vehicles for missions that did not require crew or Shuttle support.McDonnell Douglas, at that time the manufacturer of the Delta family, signed a contract with the U.S. Air Force in 1987 to provide seven Delta IIs. These were intended to launch a series of GPS Block II satellites, which had previously been manifested for the Space Shuttle. The Air Force exercised additional contract options in 1988, expanding this order to 20 vehicles, and NASA purchased its first Delta IIs in 1990 for the launch of three Earth-observing satellites. The first Delta II launch occurred in 1989, with a Delta 6925 boosting the first GPS Block II satellite into a 20,000km high orbit.
Delta IV is an expendable launch system in the Delta rocket family. The rocket's main components are designed by Boeing's Integrated Defense Systems division and built in the United Launch Alliance (ULA) facility in Decatur, Alabama. Final assembly is completed at the launch site by ULA. The rockets were designed to launch payloads into orbit for the United States Air Force Evolved Expendable Launch Vehicle (EELV) program and commercial satellite business. Delta IV rockets are available in five versions: Medium, Medium+ (4,2), Medium+ (5,2), Medium+ (5,4), and Heavy, to cover a range of payload size and weight. Delta IV was primarily designed to satisfy the needs of the U.S. military.
The Delta IV entered the space launch market when global capacity was already much higher than demand. Furthermore, as an unproven design it has had difficulty finding a market in commercial launches, and the cost to launch a Delta IV is higher than that for competing vehicles. In 2003, Boeing pulled the Delta IV from the commercial market, citing low demand and high costs. In 2005, Boeing stated that it sought to return the Delta IV to commercial service.
Delta Rocket History - Part II - Legacy Of Thor - America's Most Successful Rocket
The Third part of my series one the Thor and Delta Rockets. At the start of the 1980's the Delta launch vehicle had managed to evolve from a small intermediate missile into a reliable launch vehicle that had carried hundreds of payloads over the last 2 decades. However, NASA was preparing to replace it with the Space Shuttle and it looked like it may be headed for retirement.
But when the Space Shuttle was unable to deliver on its promises of reliable low cost launch services Delta was there to pick up the slack and continue its career up to the present day... or maybe 2018, depending on what you consider delta to be.

Explaining the Delta Rocket Fireball - Kerbal Space Program Doesn't Teach....
Every time a Delta IV launches people inevitably ask if the rocket consuming fireball is supposed to happen. The answer is yes, this is caused by the rocket purging its engines with hydrogen before letting the hydrogen/oxygen mixture into the combustion chamber. But there's more to it that that of course.

United Launch Alliance will be launching the ICESat 2 satellite for NASA aboard a Delta 2 rocket from SLC-2W at the Vandenberg Air Force Base. IceSat 2 will be deployed to a low Earth polar orbit at an altitude of 500 KM (310 miles) and at a 92 degree inclination.
The satellite was manufactured by Northrup Grumman Innovation Systems (NGIS). It only has a single instrument, the Advanced Topographic Laser Altimeter System (ATLAS), which was designed and built by the NASA Goddard Space Flight Center who will also be managing the mission.

A great deal of this research was compiled by Ed Kyle, thanks for his fantastic work.

A short history of the evolution of the Thor-Delta family of rockets from Thor-Able to Delta II.
Models by RaiderNick and Kartoffelkuchen.
Music from the World of Warships OST.
Know about the history of Delta family, USA's one of the oldest running Rocket family. Delta 4 Heavy is the 2nd most powerful Rocket (as of writing this), which will soon get Retired. Delta family included Delta 1, 2, 3 and 4. Watch this to Learn more.
Also check out the playlist Rockets, also learn about other rockets like the iconic Saturn 5, Atlas V, etc.
