Weather Update: ठंड ने दिखाए तेवर, क्या जम जाएगी पूरी Delhi? | Delhi NCR Winter Today News
Weather Update: As December unfolded, winter began showing its wrath, leaving Delhi shivering under its icy grip. Even those huddled around bonfires couldn't help but remark, "If this continues, Delhi might just freeze." Meanwhile, the plains of Kashmir, which had been enduring a prolonged dry spell, witnessed their first snowfall in the lower regions on Thursday, painting the landscape white.

India's capital and most populous city is Delhi, home to 31 million residents.

This is the most populous city, and the capital, of a country that will soon have more people than anywhere else on Earth. Home to more than 31 million residents, it’s a chaotic place with a complicated history. It has major problems in housing, inequality, and transportation, but if it can solve them, its residents will experience an enormous increase in prosperity. As India’s seat of power, what happens here impacts a billion people and reverberates around the world. This is Delhi: a fulcrum of the 21st century.
Nestled along a protective ridge that sends Himalayan snowmelt either west to the tributaries of the Indus river, or east to the Ganges, Delhi is the gateway to one of the most expansive, fertile agricultural plains on the planet, and a collection point for goods on their way to an extensive coastline for export.
This land has been the capital of empire after empire for thousands of years, but the defining moment in its modern history occurred 75 years ago when India declared its independence from the British Empire at Delhi’s Red Fort. This resulted in the partition of the Indian territory along religious lines into India, and West and East Pakistan, which eventually became independent Bangladesh.
This had massive consequences.
This flood of new arrivals overwhelmed the city as makeshift housing settlements sprouted and grew all over. This building wasn’t done to code and lacked basic plumbing and sewers. It’s a crisis that Delhi is still struggling to solve. Today, the percentage of its residents living in so-called unauthorized areas is as high as 40%. That’s a staggering 12 million people.
But to get a more complete picture of what Delhi is today, we must go back to events after Indian independence. In 1947 Indian per-capita income had not increased since 1757–that’s 190 years of British imperialists taking ownership of - and exporting away - vast quantities of India’s bountiful natural resources. Revolutionary Mahatma Gandhi and his hand-picked political heir, Jawaharlal Nehru, knew the Indian people needed a far different system than what the British Empire had imposed.
What Nehru wanted was an idyllic ‘Total Society’ in which injustice and inequality would be defeated by the perfect nation-system. This dream was cemented during a short four-day visit to Moscow, where Nehru and his father were wined and dined by the Communist Party’s elite celebrating the ten-year anniversary of the Bolshevik revolution. With tightly managed visits to factories and theatres, it was an obvious attempt to impart a rosy picture of Soviet-style socialism onto visiting dignitaries, and it worked. Nehru was awed by the USSR’s achievements in industry, art, and bureaucracy.
Real estate and land development in the city of Delhi was tightly controlled. The Delhi Development Authority - or DDA - was created in 1957 and granted the exclusive responsibility of land development within the borders of the city. The DDA prevented individuals from owning more than a handful of acres and forced people to sell the agency their property at below-market prices.

Delhi is certainly not for the faint-hearted! I decided to walk alone through the busiest street in town, which at rush hour, is the most crowded street in the world! Would you ever do this by yourself?! Also, do you like India? I have a love-hate relationship with the country, but something keeps pulling me back!

Delhi, Ontario mid 1950's
Some 16mm film shot by my uncle (Bill Kelsey Jr.) in the mid 1950's in Delhi, Ontario. I am not sure what the occasion was, but there was a parade for it! Featured often in the video is one of my grandfathers (W.C. Kelsey) steamers, used for curing tobacco. These were built in his shop on Waverly St, later the site of Delhi Metal. The old water tower, and shop can be seen nicely in the opening shots.

Delhi refers to both a former township and unincorporated community located off of the junction of Ontario Highways 59 and 3. Delhi is known as the "Heart of Tobacco Country." Prior to 1880, this community was known for its lumber industry. One of the Communities in Norfolk County, Ontario, Delhi had a population of 4,240 at the time of the 2016 Census.
Founded by Frederick Sovereen (spelled Sovereign by a few sources) the settlement was called Sovereen's Corners or Sovereign's Corners and was located in Middleton Township. Later, the community was renamed Fredericksburg and in 1856, to its present-day name of Delhi. The name is usually attributed locally to a postmaster honouring the major city of Delhi, India, at the time under the control of the British Empire.
Delhi has a humid continental climate. Winters are cold with a January average of −7.8 °C (18.0 °F) in January and most days have maximum temperatures below 0 °C (32 °F). Summers are warm and humid with a July high of 27 °C (81 °F) and a July low of 15 °C (59 °F). Temperatures above 30 °C (86 °F) occur 10 days per year. The average annual precipitation is 1,010 millimetres (40 in), which is relatively evenly distributed throughout the year. Delhi averages 2021 hours of bright sunshine per year or 43% of daylight hours, ranging from a low of 21.2% in December to 62.2% in July. —-------

Why do North Indians Look Different from South Indians? The Genetics of South Asia
Today, we're going to answer the questions of why North and South Indians have such vastly varying features, and look at the genetic history of South Asia as a whole.
I'm not trying to offend anyone with my tangent on skin color discrimination in Bollywood and Indian society, merely stating a fact that Bollywood actors are of a much lighter complexion than the average Indian so it's not fair to judge what the average Indian looks like by looking at South Indian celebrities.
Indians with light skin are not any less "Indian-looking" than Indians with dark skin. Don't post racist comments in my comment section. Thanks.
Let me know your thoughts on India and Indians in the comments below.
Thanks for watching!

ANTHROPOS INDIA FOUNDATION INVITES YOU FOR A DISTINGUISHED GUEST LECTURE By Prof. ABHIJIT GUHA
(Former Professor in Anthropology, Vidyasagar University & former Senior Fellow of Indian Council of Social Science Research at Institute of Development Studies Kolkata)
Speakers Abstract:
Research on the history of anthropology in India, unlike western countries, has not yet become a formidable tradition despite the fact that academic courses on the growth and development of anthropology in India had been recommended at the undergraduate and postgraduate levels in the Model Curriculum Development Report of the University Grants Commission as early as 2001.
Under this scenario, the conceptual framework of my discourse has been derived from a critical and selective reading of the anthropological...

Why Indians look so different?
Indians share a gene with Europeans that plays a significant role in coding for lighter skin, new research suggests.
The study, published Nov. 7 2013, in the journal PLOS Genetics, also revealed that the gene, which is responsible for 27 percent of skin color variation in Indians, was positively selected for in North, but not South Indian populations. When something is "selected for," that means it provides some advantage and so gets passed down to offspring, becoming more prevalent in a population over time.
Many shades
The Indian subcontinent has an enormous variation in skin color.
"We have dark brown [tones], yellow tones and whitish-pinkish tones," said study lead author Chandana Basu Mallick, a biologist at the University of Tartu in Estonia. "We have quite a range and diversity ...

Do they look different because they have any links with other country`s mongoloid features like china, Singapore, Myanmar, Thailand etc. or are they truly genetically and evolutionarily different from the mainland india.

Afghan Culture in Delhi
India is known for its rich cultural diversity and ethnic groups all over the world.
The age old Indian saying “Athithi Devo Bhava”, literally equates the position of a guest to God. Although most of us are well aware of the different Indian cultures thriving amidst the state boundaries but there are also a few international community’s which consider India to be their homeland.
One such example lies in the Bhogal area of Lajpat Nagar which has been home to thousands of refugees from Afghanistan. It has been years since they migrated from their homeland and settled in the southern patches of Delhi. Today, India is no less than a home to them and they have created a new life for themselves in this part of Delhi that is known to many as ‘Mini Kabul’.

Under this scenario, the conceptual framework of my discourse has been derived from a critical and selective reading of the anthropological texts produced by Indian anthropologists. This reading of the history of Indian anthropology was based on two sources. One source was the reading of the original texts by pioneering anthropologists who were committed to various
tasks of nation-building, while the other was the reading of literature by anthropologists who critiqued early Indian anthropology as simply following the western/colonial tradition. These two readings of the texts were juxtaposed to write a new and critical history of the discipline, which emphasized the nationalist tradition of Indian Anthropology. On the reverse side of the colonial critique, there also existed a view that an Indian form of anthropology could be discerned in many ancient Indian texts and scriptures before the advent of a colonial anthropology introduced by the European scholars, administrators and missionaries in the Indian subcontinent. I have designated this view as ‘Hindu Anthropology’.
Finally, I have argued that anthropologists did make attempts to tackle some of the major challenges (viz. famine, rehabilitation of refugees and development-caused-displacement) encountered by the country in the early periods of nation-building, which I would narrate in some detail in this lecture. Under the changing times and circumstances, the future of nationalist anthropology in India lies in carrying forward this remarkable tradition of anthropology developed by some of the pioneers. This justifies the historical exploration of the nationalist trends in Indian anthropology with present and future implications.

"We have quite a range and diversity in the biological spectrum of skin color."
But because South Asian gene studies are relatively rare, it wasn't clear which genes contributed to this variation. Past research has found at least 126 genes that code for pigmentation in general, Basu Mallick said.
Genetic mosaic
To find out, Basu Mallick and her colleagues took skin color measurements for about 1,228 individuals in Southern India. The researchers then conducted a genetic analysis and found that about 27 percent of the skin color variation was due to a variation in a skin pigmentation gene. Called SLC24A5, this gene codes for lighter skin and is present in almost 100 percent of Europeans.
The team also examined the gene in 95 people around the subcontinent and found that both South Asian and European populations inherited this particular variant from a common ancestor who lived sometime between 22,000 and 28,000 years ago.
"We don't know the origin of this mutation. We just know that they have a common ancestor," Basu Mallick told LiveScience, referring to both South Asians and Europeans.
The team then looked for the gene in more than 2,000 people from 54 ethnic groups around the subcontinent. Some groups, such as populations in Tibet and Burma, didn't have the gene variant at all, whereas the Northwestern tip of the subcontinent had a nearly 90 percent prevalence of the gene.
Lighter skin has less melanin, a pigment that blocks the sun's UV rays; the body uses these rays to make vitamin D. The SLC24A5 gene is linked to less melanin production, so the gene may have become more common in Europe because it allowed people's skin to make more vitamin D in the continent's low-light conditions.
But in India, the prevalence of the gene in different populations didn't correlate with latitude, but instead seemed strongly linked to language, geography and demographic history. The study also showed that the gene was positively selected for in North, but not South India (though both light- and dark-skinned people live in both regions).
It's not clear exactly what caused the gene to be favored in certain regions, but it probably wasn't the production of vitamin D alone, the study suggests.
"The demographic history of the population and their ancestry also contribute in this variation," Basu Mallick said.

Hello Flearners, this is Nikita and ever wondered why most of the people of our society discriminates north-east Indians only because they look a bit different from other Indians. Do they look different because they have any links with other country`s mongoloid features like china, Singapore, Myanmar, Thailand etc. or are they truly genetically and evolutionarily different from the mainland india.
Well, stay throughout the video to find out.

One such example lies in the Bhogal area of Lajpat Nagar which has been home to thousands of refugees from
Afghanistan. It has been years since they migrated from their homeland and settled in the southern patches of Delhi. Today, India is no less than a home to them and they have created a new life for themselves in this part of Delhi that is known to many as ‘Mini Kabul’.
While some are studying in the universities of Delhi, a few have set up their small businesses in the adjoining markets. A new shade of Afghani colour has enhanced the beauty of Delhi’s cultural canvas.
As the evening strikes, the community parks are seen with kids playing all together while ignoring the differences the borders have created.
