A water gap is a geological feature where a river cuts through a mountain ridge. The Delaware Water Gap began to form 500 million years ago when quartz pebbles from mountains in the area were deposited in a shallow sea. The Martinsburg Shale on the eastern side of what was to be Kittatinny Mountain was uplifted 450 million years ago when a chain of volcanic islands collided with proto-North America. These islands slid over the North American plate, and deposited rock on top of plate, forming the Highlands and Kittatinny Valley.
About 400 million years ago, a small, narrow continent collided with proto-North America. The heat from the pressure melted the quartzite, which allowed it to bend the quartz pebbles and Silurian Shawangunk Conglomerate. This layer was then uplifted and cracked over thousands of years. During this period, the Delaware River slowly cut its path down through the shattered and cracked quartzite. If the quartzite had not been cracked, the river would not have been able to cut its path through the mountain to form the gap.
Parking will be available at the Delaware Water Gap National Recreation Area visitor's center, located southwest of Interstate 80. The Commonwealth of Pennsylvania recently completed improvements to the visitor’s center. A park-and-ride facility, a five-level garage with about 900 spaces, will be built in the current parking area. The amount of parking for the visitor center will remain unchanged.
Pedestrians will walk between the station platform and the parking site via PA Route 2028, which will be improved to handle the foot traffic. Cars coming from Interstate 80 will also use Route 2028.
Delaware is in the northeastern portion of the Delmarva Peninsula and is the second smallest, the sixth least populous, but the sixth most densely populated of the 50 United States. Delaware is divided into three counties, the lowest number of counties of any state. From north to south, the three counties are New Castle, Kent, and Sussex. While the southern two counties have historically been predominantly agricultural, New Castle County has been more industrialized.
Before its coastline was explored by Europeans in the 16th century, Delaware was inhabited by several groups of Native Americans, including the Lenape in the north and Nanticoke in the south. It was initially colonized by Dutch traders at Zwaanendael, near the present town of Lewes, in 1631. Delaware was one of the 13 colonies participating in the American Revolution and on December7, 1787, became the first state to ratify the Constitution of the United States, thereby becoming known as The First State.
Delaware wine refers to wine made from grapes grown in the U.S. state of Delaware. Historically, the first Swedish settlers planted grapes and made wine in Delaware as early as 1638.
Delaware has five wineries that each have limited production, the fewest of any state in the United States. The largest winery is Nassau Valley Vineyards, which makes fruit wines in addition to grape wines. Two others are Pizzadili, a small, family business which opened in 2007 and Harvest Ridge Winery, which opened in 2013.
The hit version of the song was recorded by Perry Como on December 28, 1959. It was released by RCA Victor Records as a 45rpm single with catalog number 47-7670 and as a stereophonic 45rpm single with catalog number 61-7670. The flip side was "I Know What God Is". The record reached #22 on the Billboard charts in March 1960.
The same recording, with the same B-side, was released by RCA in the United Kingdom (catalog number 1170) where, oddly, it did even better there than in the U.S., reaching #3 on the UK Singles Chart.

Delaware Water Gap National Recreation Area, Pennsylvania/New Jersey
It’s July 4th week 2023 and we are traveling 5 hours from the other side of PA to the Delaware Water Gap to spend 5 days exploring this National Recreation Area.
The Delaware Water Gap National Recreation Area encompasses nearly 70,000 acres in a river valley stretching over 40-miles - the Middle Delaware National Scenic and Recreational River in Pennsylvania and New Jersey.
On this trip we are spending a full day exploring the numerous waterfalls in the area and combining that with a 3-day/2-night canoe journey down the Delaware River.
This is our first time in the Delaware Water Gap so we chose to hire a local outfitter for our canoe and shuttle. The camping research was on us to figure out.
If you are planning a river trip, here are a few things to know:
There are 62 designated primitive campsites.
The National Park Service requires you cover a set of miles in order to stay 1, 2, or 3 nights on the river:
One-night - at least 14 miles
Two-nights - at least 26 miles
Three nights - at least 34 miles
Campsite permits are required to camp along the river. You can book at recreation.gov.
Permits are valid for the zone/date you book, but specific sites within are first come first served.
