In the grand tapestry of existence, where threads of meaning intertwine with the fabric of reality, storytelling emerges as a beacon of illumination, guiding us through the labyrinth of comprehension. Welcome, esteemed audience, to the enthralling performance titled "Storytelling and Semiotics," a journey into the depths of meaning-making and narrative construction.
As I, Dillon E.T., stand before you, I am imbued with a fervent passion for unraveling the intricate web of symbols and signs that shape our understanding of the world. In the ideal settlement of progressive understanding, nestled within the fertile soil of collaboration and virtue, the archetypal man and woman embark on a sacred dance, choreographed by the principles of semiotics.
Within this domain of shared knowledge, symbols transcend their mere representation, becoming vessels of profound significance. The High Ground Diamond, gleaming with resilience and focus, marks the stable terrain of our journey, a testament to our unwavering commitment to the pursuit of knowledge.
But as we traverse the landscape of comprehension, we encounter the Rainbow, a vibrant tapestry of hues symbolizing the dynamic process of migration between diverse perspectives. With each step, we embrace adaptability, embracing the ever-changing currents of thought that shape our understanding.
In the crucible of character articulation, the Crystal Ball becomes our beacon, illuminating the path to deeper insights and revelations. With purposeful intent, we wield the Sword, unearthing the hidden truths that lie beneath the surface, as we engage in the sacred act of storytelling.
Yet, amidst the hustle and bustle of our intellectual pursuits, we must not forget the importance of nurturing meaning within the settlement. Like tender gardeners, we cultivate the richness of significance, symbolized by the humble Potted Plant, tending to the fertile soil of knowledge with care and dedication.
In our quest for purpose alignment, the Blood Drop emerges as a symbol of intentionality, urging us to organize our resources with clarity and generosity. It is through purposeful action, guided by the principles of the theological frame, that we align ourselves with the divine plan, contributing to the greater tapestry of existence.
As we gather within the Circus Tent of community and trust, we share our stories with one another, each crayon stroke shaping and refining our collective narrative. With each tale shared, we shed light on the intricacies of existence, adding depth and texture to the fabric of our understanding.
In conclusion, dear audience, "Storytelling and Semiotics" is not merely a performance but a sacred ritual, a celebration of the human capacity for meaning-making and connection. As we navigate the labyrinth of existence, let us remember the power of symbols and signs, for they are the threads that bind us together in our shared journey toward enlightenment.

—In October 2024, New Curriculum Group (NCG) collaborators Thomas Hoeller and Cary Campbell interviewed neuroscientist and evolutionary biologist Terrence Deacon (University of California, Berkeley).
Together, we discuss: Deacon’s theory (and upcoming book) of "inverse darwinism"; Deacon's relationship to CS. Peirce through his education and career – including discussion on how his thinking diverges from Peirce; his ongoing relationship to the field of biosemiotics and semiotic questions in biology, as well as; the centrality of constraints and absential phenomena to his biological thinking. Later on in the interview we discuss Deacon's theories of morpho- and teleo-dynamics as applied to the study of musical cognition and the perception and experience of sonic phenomena, as well as; how we might apply Deacon's conceptualization of human symbolic capacities and recently the noosphere to global crises we are facing in this time, including the rise of Artificial Intelligence (or what Deacon calls Simulated Intelligence) and the challenges to education.
- Production and Music by Thomas Hoeller and Terrestrial Sound Studios (East Vancouver).
This is an ongoing interview and knowledge mobilization series we are calling "Illuminating limits: responses to the polycrisis". NOTE: Deacon's theory of biological constraints is an essential aspect of how we approach this project of 'illuminating limits'. See: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=7LqxaiDK7GU&t=41s
BIOs:
- Professor Terrence W. Deacon's research has combined human evolutionary biology and neuroscience, with the aim of investigating the evolution of human cognition. His work extends from laboratory-based cellular-molecular neurobiology to the study of semiotic processes underlying animal and human communication, especially language. Many of these interests are explored in his 1997 book, The Symbolic Species: The Coevolution of Language and the Brain.
His neurobiological research is focused on determining the nature of the human divergence from typical primate brain anatomy, the cellular-molecular mechanisms producing this difference, and the correlations between these anatomical differences and special human cognitive abilities, particularly language. In pursuit of these questions he has used a variety of laboratory approaches including the tracing of axonal connections, quantitative analysis of regions of different species brains, and cross-species fetal neural transplantation. The goal is to identify elements of the developmental genetic mechanisms that distinguish human brains from other ape brains, to aid the study of the cognitive consequences of human brain evolution.
His theoretical interests include the study of evolution-like processes at many levels, including their role in embryonic development, neural signal processing, language change, and social processes, and how these different processes interact and depend on each other. Currently, his theoretical interests have focused on the problem of explaining emergent phenomena, such as characterize such apparently unprecedented transitions as the origin of life, the evolution of language, and the generation of conscious experience by brains. This is fuelled by a career-long interest in the ideas of the late 19th-century American philosopher, Charles Sanders Peirce and his theory of semiosis. His new book, Incomplete Nature: How Mind Emerged from Matter, explores the relationship between thermodynamic, self-organizing, evolutionary and semiotic processes and provides a new technical conception of information that explains both its representational and normative properties. (https://anthropology.berkeley.edu/terrence-w-deacon)
- Cary Campbell (PhD.) is a Lecturer (or Professor of Teaching) in the Faculty of Education at SFU. His research and teaching addresses the nexus of educational challenges posed by mass digitalisation, overshoot/climate change and the broader challenges of cultivating place and ecological-connectedness in today’s globalized and hyper-capitalist society. See: https://www.sfu.ca/education/faculty-profiles/ccampbell.html
- Thomas Hoeller is a recording producer, guitarist and director of Terrestrial Sound Studios as well as an independent, community-engaged researcher interested in issues of land-economics and arts education.
