Death in June are a neofolk group led by Englishfolk musician Douglas Pearce, better known as Douglas P. The band was originally formed in Britain in 1981 as a trio, but after the other members left in 1984 and 1985 to work on other projects, the group became the work of Douglas P. and various collaborators. Douglas P. now lives in Australia.
Over the band's three decades of existence, they have made numerous shifts in style and presentation, resulting in an overall shift from initial post-punk and Industrial Records influence to a more acoustic and folk music-oriented approach. They are sometimes considered controversial (largely due to usage of themes and imagery relating to Nazi Germany). Douglas P.'s influence was instrumental in sparking neofolk, of which his music has subsequently become a part.
I’ve long been a fan of Death In June but I’ll be the first to admit I’ve been a casual listener, dipping in and out of Douglas’ mystical world as and when I please. I finally decided to do a deep dive into the controversy around Death In June and analyze the group’s imagery, symbolism and lyrical content. The aim of the video is to try and fully understand if there is any weight to the accusations that get thrown at Douglas P a lot.
I am not here to condemn Douglas P and nor am I - and this is important because people fly off without reading or watching things properly - nor am I defending Douglas P and the choices he has made with Death In June over the decades. This has been a learning experience for me, and if anything, it has greatly deepened my understanding of this fascinating art...

* CORRECTIONS *
I did not know at the time of recording that several songs - including “Because Of Him” - were adapted from songs by the People’s Temple Choir, which means my analysis of the lyrical content is 100% incorrect. Even though I talk about "He's Disabled" at the start, this discovery should only effect the small section on "Because Of Him".
When talking about “Symbols Of The Sun” I refer to a line in the song that goes: “symbols of the winter”. This, of course, doesn’t exist. The correct line is: “symbols of the snow”. The worst bit is, during the completed edit, Douglas sings the correct line just before I say the incorrect one. D’oh!

Suicidal preacher hangs himself Unfaithful servant goes straight to hell When he returns, Your life will end Down from the skies maggots descend Least expecting his horrible face Your decayed guts you soon will taste Unholy feeling grows deep inside Choking on your guts you open wide Regurgutated guts Satisfy his needs Regurgutated guts Now you're gonna bleed Visions of death are growing clear Life as a corpse is what you fear Searching through the graves to be set free From the curse of the priest that's come to be So unaware of what's to come Your guts are his when he is done Reaching for your cross to end this pain Your life and blood he will have drained Regurgutated guts Satisfy his needs Regurgutated guts Now you're gonna bleed In his trance Your eyes they bleed Your guts come forth
