David Olney passed away during a 2nd performance at the festival later in the day. According to fellow singer-songwriters Amy Rigby and Scott Miller, who shared the Boathouse at WaterColor stage with him, Olney simply went silent while singing his third song, a cover of Jack Murray’s “Bluebonnet Girl.”
"Olney was in the middle of his third song when he stopped, apologized and shut his eyes. He was very still, sitting upright with his guitar on, wearing the coolest hat and a beautiful rust suede jacket we laughed about because it was raining like hell outside the boathouse where we were playing- I just want the picture to be as graceful and dignified as it was, because it at first looked like he was just taking a moment." - Amy Rigby
"David was playing a song when he paused, said “I’m sorry” and put his chin to his chest. He never dropped his guitar or fell off his stool. It was as easy and gentle as he was." - Scott Miller

Something happened. Back there all those centuries ago. Something not easily believed or easily dismissed. Two thousand years of glory and horror, of love and hate, of beauty and violence have only made those long ago events murkier and more enigmatic. But nothing comes of nothing. Something happened. The Stone is an attempt to address those events. From varying points of view (a con man, a donkey, a murderer and a soldier), a story is told. A picture struggles to emerge. Nothing is proved. Nothing is denied.

David Olney’s new single and music video, “DEATH WILL NOT DIVIDE US” from his acclaimed album, “This Side Or The Other” (Black Hen Music) comes from a deeper well.
David often draws inspiration for his music from classic poetry and literature as well as The Greatest Story Ever Told a/k/a The Bible - as heard in career-defining songs like “Jerusalem Tomorrow”, “Brays”, “Barabbas” and “Servant, Job.”
"DEATH WILL NOT DIVIDE US" was co-written with Abbie Gardner (of Red Molly). David says, “I wanted to catch the spirit of Paul’s letter to the Romans, Chapter 8, Verses 38 and 39*. I love Abbie’s line, ‘There’s a moment of decision when the ground comes up to meet us.’”
The new music video echoes our ever-changing world with one constant, opening with a young girl joyfully dancing as she leads a parade of the past into the future. Her movements are whimsical, flowing and childlike while she dons a jester hat. Others follow her “blindly” dancing through town, wandering through historic sites and Romanesque buildings, trusting their fearless leader.
As with the album’s title track video, this new offering was directed by Anana Kaye and Irakli Gabriel, two artists who originally immigrated from the Republic of Georgia (Eastern Europe), now living in Music City, by way of New York City. Gabriel says there’s a “general psychedelic concept behind the video, which is kind of like ‘cast against the type' considering the lyrics and music.”
* Romans 8:38-39 “For I am sure that neither death nor life, nor angels nor rulers, nor things present nor things to come, nor powers, nor height nor depth, nor anything else in all creation, will be able to separate us from the love of God in Christ Jesus our Lord.”

THIS SIDE OR THE OTHER was written by David Olney, Annie McCue & John Hadley and is the title track from David Olney’s new full-length album release on Black Hen Music (available Aug. 24, 2018). David shares this story behind the song: “I got the idea from the film, ‘ he Town'. The movie is about Boston gangsters. A father in prison says this to his son. What a beautiful thing for a hard man to say. I took the idea to Anne McCue and John Hadley and we wrote this song. Anne sings on this one, too.”
The video was filmed in on both sides of the Cumberland River Nashville, TN and directed by Anana Kaye and Irakli Gabriel - two artists originally immigrating from the Republic of Georgia (Eastern Europe), now living in Music City, by way of New York City.
While “This Side or The Other” is not a concept album, there are some recurring themes. The frequent reference to walls in these songs – walls being built and tumbling down – will suggest that while Olney has encountered more than his own share of walls, he is still trying his best to understand them.
The other musicians on “This Side or The Other” are Country Music Hall of Fame inductee Charlie McCoy, The McCrary Sisters, Fats Kaplin, Anne McCue and Olney’s regular band: Daniel Seymour on bass, Ward Stout on fiddle and Justin Amaral on drums.
After more than 30 years in music, DAVID OLNEY has had as many incarnations as you can imagine. His resume has expanded to include acting, poetry and a popular weekly streamcast called YOU NEVER KNOW. All of this adds to Olney’s strength as a songwriter’s songwriter (Emmylou Harris, Del McCoury, Linda Ronstadt, Steve Young, Tim O’Brien and others), and one of Nashville’s founding fathers of Americana music.
