David Eric "Dave" Grohl (born January 14, 1969) is an American rock musician, multi-instrumentalist, singer-songwriter, and producer who is best known as the former drummer for the grunge band Nirvana and the founder and frontman of the rock band Foo Fighters, of which he is the lead vocalist, one of three guitarists, and primary songwriter.
He was the drummer and co-founder of the rock supergroupThem Crooked Vultures. Grohl has additionally written all the music and performed all the instruments for his short-lived side projects Late! and Probot, as well as being involved with Queens of the Stone Age numerous times throughout the past decade.
David Eric Grohl was born in Warren, Ohio, the son of Virginia Jean (née Hanlon), a teacher, and James Harper Grohl, at the time a newswriter. He has Slovak, German, and Irish ancestry. When he was a child, Grohl's family moved from Warren, to Springfield, Virginia. When Grohl was seven, his parents divorced, and he subsequently grew up with his mother.
William Goldsmith (born July 4, 1972) is an American drummer best known for being the drummer of the Seattle alternative band Sunny Day Real Estate and for his tenure as the drummer of the alternative rock band Foo Fighters. Currently drumming for Brawley Banks and a reunited Sunny Day Real Estate, he has toured with Mike Watt, IQU, and has recorded and played live with many other bands and artists.
Early years
Goldsmith was born in Seattle, Washington to Hugh and Skitty Goldsmith. He began playing drums as a child, after being introduced by his older brother to bands such as The Beatles, Led Zeppelin, Elvis Costello and the Attractions and Talking Heads. Goldsmith has stated that he wanted to be John Lennon, but also a drummer, and has cited Keith Moon of The Who as his biggest influence on the instrument. During fifth grade, Goldsmith formed his first band, Screaming Hormones. In high school, Goldsmith formed a duo called the 13 with John Atkins, and later formed the hardcore punk band Reason to Hate with his friend Jeremy Enigk, whom he had previously invited to be the bassist for the 13. After Goldsmith graduated from high school, Greg Williamson invited him to the band Positive Greed. Afterwards Goldsmith worked on many ensembles, at times being a member of four bands simultaneously. He also expanded his tastes in music, becoming a fan of post-hardcore bands such as Fugazi, and of Nirvana's debut album Bleach.

He’s been a bona fide music icon since Nirvana burst onto the alternative rock scene in Seattle almost 30 years ago. His memorable drum parts on hits like “Come As You Are” and “Smells Like Teen Spirit” provided a soundtrack to the ‘90s for angst-ridden teens around the world.

For those of you who have commented about how hard this must be for Dave...
I agree... it probably wasn't easy for DG to get to this point where he was willing to share. At the show (and in his book and many interviews) he actually talked about the long path it took to get to not only TALK about Kurt, but to even want to listen to ANY music after his death. Still, a lot of time has passed, which always helps. And in the meantime, Dave has become quite a talented, thoughtful storyteller. I am sure, as difficult as it will always be to him, it probably also now a cathartic experience for him. At least I hope it is.

What’s going on my fellow rock n’ rollers. Don’t forget to hit the bell notification icon to be notified every time i put out a new video on my channel. Today I wanted to talk about a feud involving foo fighters frontman dave grohl and their original drummer William Goldsmith. Why did Goldsmith leave the band and how did the band’s current drummer Taylor Hawkins get involved in the beef? Stay tuned to find out.
William Goldsmith would serve as Foo Fighters original drummer starting in 1995 and playing with the group until 1997. Goldsmith was previously a member of the alternative rock band Sunny Day Real Estate alongside the Foo Fighters bassist Nate Mendel. Sunny Day Real Estate was on the verge of breaking in the mid 90's up just as Dave Grohl was looking to put together a band to tour on Foo Fighters debut album in which Grohl played all the instruments with the exception of one guitar part. Impressed with Sunny Day Real Estates rhythm section, Grohl approached the pair and gave them a copy of Foo Fighters debut record. From that point on the trio along with former Nirvana and The Germs guitarist Pat Smear started to tour together over the next years. The tour though, was a challenge for Goldsmith who admitted in the 2011 documentary Back and Fourth that he was a little nervous playing in front of a crowd and resorted to drinking and drugs to deal with the pressure. The band’s tour would prove to be a success as they would play bigger and bigger venues as time went on, paving the way for their hugely successful sophomore album The Colour and the Shape.
The recording of the album was difficult for the band as it was the first time the quartet were in a studio setting. Famed Pixies producer Gil Norton pushed the band to perfect their parts and both Goldsmith and Mendel struggled as Norton at one point referred to them as the rhythmnless section. The songs on the record were written primarily during soundchecks during their 1.5 year long tour with bassist Nate Mendel telling an interviewer how Grohl was the creative force saying "the germ of every song is Dave's," with the frontman providing a riff and a basic song structure. The band would then jam and each member would contribute to some aspect of the song. And due to Grohl’s drumming background he would reveal in the same Back and Forth documentary that when he’s writing a song he already has an idea of what the drummer should be playing, so Goldsmith would be under extra scrutiny during the writing and recording of the album.
And the sessions proved to be expensive and time consuming as Grohl was unhappy with the quality of the music initially. The band decided to take break over the Christmas holidays and reconvene in the new year. The band minus Goldsmith reconvened in Los Angeles in February of 1997 to re-record the entire album with Grohl re-recording all of the drum parts with the exception of two songs including ‘Doll” and “Up in Arms.” Grohl and producer Norton didn’t feel as if the drumming was up to snuff and Goldsmith who was in Seattle at the time, even contacted the band to see if he should fly down to LA, but Grohl told him was busy doing overdubs. Mendel would tell Goldsmith the truth of what was actually happening and that Dave was re-recording most of his drum parts. Angered and upset, Goldsmith left the band by the end of 1997 even though Grohl wanted him to tour with the group.. Upon hearing the final versions of the drum tracks on The sophomore record Goldsmith would tell the Daily Mail in 2017 The versions Dave did were very similar. I am not saying I am an amazing drummer – the work that I did was not bad' he'd say
He'd also talk about him leaving the band saying
'The way things were handled, and what was done to me, I do think that staying in that band would have made me feel like my soul was destroyed and I would have likely ended up dead,' he'd explained.
In the same interview Goldsmith would claim that
he wished he had never met Grohl, saying: 'That feeling might change if we actually sat down and talked. But that hasn't hap

(Pardon the rolling shutter in the first half. Wanted to change the setting, but I would have missed the beginning of the song.)
At Dave's book release event for "The Storyteller" (at the Ford-Los Angeles, October 12, 2021). I've seen him play this song on the drums once or twice over the years (like at Cal Jam), but usually with a guest singer. This is the first time I've seen him play along to the original track—with Kurt's voice. What an emotional, funny, revealing, memorable night. Now gotta go read the book.

You might know him as the vocalist of the Foo Fighters, the drummer for Nirvana, or the nicest guy in rock. No matter how you slice it, Dave Grohl is one of the most influential drummers in rock history. He’s also been inducted into the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame... twice!
As if that weren’t enough, his second act as the frontman for Foo Fighters showed off his impressive musical versatility and rock star personality.

Welcome to the Letterman YouTube Channel, home to all your favorite clips from Late Night and Late Show - as well as conversations with the writers, producers and performers who helped make it all happen. The language may strike you as quaint & flowery, the clothing comically lacey & ornate — but that’s how things were back in this colorful and now bygone era.
Once upon a time I was somebody else In another life, I sold myself Way back then, back when I was new Somewhere down the line I started to slip Years gone by, biting my lip All the while, all this time I knew Now your on your own, one for the pages Over the hill and through the ages Does my heaven burn like hell on you? Out beneath the cracks and coming in waves Rolling like an earthquake under the pavement Heavy now, tell me Mr.Truth You got a lot of nerve Now show a little backbone why don't you (Chorus) I'm lookin' for some back and forth with you Are you feeling the same as I do now and now and then? I'm lookin' for some back and forth with you Are you feeling the same as I do? Down and out Holding my breath I waited and waited How'd the simple life get so complicated? Shoes to fill, secrets to spill down you Deer in the headlights, spoke in the wheel You want pretend I need for real I'm taking it back, all my IOU's You got a lot of nerve Now show a little backbone why don't you (Chorus) (Solo) You got a lot of nerve Now show a little backbone why don't you (Chorus x3)
