David Warren "Dave" Brubeck (December 6, 1920– December 5, 2012) was an American jazz pianist and composer, considered to be one of the foremost exponents of cool jazz. He wrote a number of jazz standards, including "In Your Own Sweet Way" and "The Duke". Brubeck's style ranged from refined to bombastic, reflecting his mother's attempts at classical training and his improvisational skills. His music is known for employing unusual time signatures, and superimposing contrasting rhythms, meters, and tonalities.
His long-time musical partner, alto saxophonist Paul Desmond, wrote the saxophone melody for the Dave Brubeck Quartet's best remembered piece, "Take Five", which is in 5/4 time and has endured as a jazz classic on one of the top-selling jazz albums, Time Out. Brubeck experimented with time signatures throughout his career, recording "Pick Up Sticks" in 6/4, "Unsquare Dance" in 7/4, "World's Fair" in 13/4, and "Blue Rondo à la Turk" in 9/8. He was also a respected composer of orchestral and sacred music, and wrote soundtracks for television such as Mr. Broadway and the animated miniseriesThis Is America, Charlie Brown.
Stephen Valentine Patrick William "Steve" Allen (December 26, 1921 – October 30, 2000) was an American television personality, musician, composer, actor, comedian, and writer. Though he got his start in radio, Allen is best known for his television career. He first gained national attention as a guest host on Arthur Godfrey's Talent Scouts. He graduated to become the first host of The Tonight Show, where he was instrumental in innovating the concept of the television talk show. Thereafter, he hosted numerous game and variety shows, including The Steve Allen Show, I've Got a Secret, and The New Steve Allen Show, and was a regular panel member on CBS' What's My Line?
Steven Allen (born 17 March 1954) is an English television and radio presenter. As of 2012, he presents the early morning breakfast show on London-based talk station LBC 97.3.
UBN closed in 1979 (following the lorry drivers' strike during the Winter of Discontent) and he joined LBC as presenter of the Night Extra programme. The Night is Young was the next series of programmes he presented and when LBC was separated into 1152 AM and 97.3 FM, Allen presented the afternoon show of 'London Talkback Radio' (latterly LBC News 1152) and Saturday Night Out. He has also worked for Blue Danube Radio in Vienna, a station sponsored by the United Nations. He was also the host of Crinkley Bottom radio on Noel's House Party.

A little tribute to Dave Greenfield (keyboardist with The Stranglers who died with Covid-19 last week) and Paul Desmond (saxophonist with the Dave Brubeck quartet - the anniversary of his death is at the end of this month). Also because I've been enjoying editing videos and recording stuff over the last couple of months.

I took a clip from a 1964 live version of Take Five (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=tT9Eh8wNMkw) and made the drum loop by chopping up the intro and turning it from 5/4 into the 3/4 - 4/4 groove that Golden Brown has. The upright bass sound is sequenced from Logic, and the piano part was...

Radio silence: Censoring Steve Allen on LBC
What's been happening since radio legend Steve Allen suddenly disappeared from LBC last month after remarking on non-binary singer Sam Smith's gender preferences?
Since Steve's last broadcast of 17 February 2023, there has been on-air silence about him, observed by all presenters at the London-based station.
That was, until the morning of 14 March 2023 when caller Brendan tried to change that - only to be instantly censored by Ian Payne and his production team.
Meanwhile a campaign to bring Steve back to LBC is gathering momentum with almost 5,000 signatures. He is the ultimate Mr LBC, having given his entire 44-year career to them. Sign the petition at https://chng.it/7vMZpxmv

Who's the real ambassador? It is evident we represent American society Noted for its etiquette, its manners and sobriety We have followed protocol with absolute propriety We're Yankees to the core. We're the real ambassadors Though we may appear as bores We are diplomats in our proper hats Our attire becomes habitual, along with all the ritual The diplomatic corps Has been analyzed and criticized by NBC and CBS Senators and congressmen are so concerned they can't recess The State Department stands and all your coup d'etat have met success They caused this great uproar Who's the real ambassador, yeah, the real ambassador? Louis: I'm the real ambassador. It is evident I was sent by government to take your place All I do is play the blues and meet the people face-to- face I'll explain and make it plain, I represent the human race I don't pretend no more. Who's the real ambassador? Certain facts we can't ignore In my humble way I'm the USA Though I represent the government The government don't represent some policies I'm for. Oh we learned to be concerned about the constitutionality In our nation segregation isn't a legality Soon our only differences will be in personality That's what I stand for!
