Automobiles Darracq S.A. was a French motor vehicle manufacturing company founded in 1896 by Alexandre Darracq after selling his Gladiator Bicycle company. By 1905 it established branches in the UK, Spain and Italy and then expanded into both cars and aviation engines. In 1920 the British arm became the majority shareholder in Sunbeam-Talbot-Darracq ('STD Motors') which was sold to the Rootes group in 1935 such that Darracq ceased to be a distinct marque, instead becoming a badge-engineered Sunbeam.
1890s - Origins
Using part of the substantial profit he had made from selling his Gladiator bicycle factory to Adolpe Clément, Darracq began operating from a plant in the Paris suburb of Suresnes. The company started with a Milletmotorcycle, powered by a five-cylinder rotary engine, but shortly introduced an electric brougham, and in 1898 a Léon Bollée-designed voiturettetricar. This proved a débâcle: the steering was problematic, the five-speed belt drive "a masterpiece of bad design", and the hot tube ignition crude, proving the £10,000 Darracq had paid for the design a mistake.

Impressive 1905 Darracq V8 - Rétromobile 2016
The french manufacturer Darracq created in 1905 this "thing", simply putting two 4 cylinder engines together on a chassis. With no front brakes. That's it.
This 25 Liter V8 released 200hp and can bring the car to almost 200 km/h.
This "beast", coming from National Motor Museum of Beaulieu, was seen during Rétromobile 2016 in Paris, France.
Mark Walker's Darracq 200hp is basically just an engine with four wheels. Back in its day in 1905 it was a Land Speed Record car, today it regularly races at Goodwood. At the 78th Goodwood Members' Meeting presented by Audrain Motorsport the Darracq was racing in the S.F. Edge Trophy and, despite having no sign of any cover, the rain did not bother Mark.
