Dar es Salaam (from Arabic:دار السلامDār as-Salām, literally "the residence of peace"; or simply Dar, formerly Mzizima) is the largest city of Tanzania and the largest city in eastern Africa by population, as well as a regionally important economic centre. It is Tanzania's most prominent city in arts, fashion, media, music, film and television. It is Tanzania's leading financial centre with the Dar es Salaam Stock Exchange (DSE) being the country's first and most important stock exchange market. Dar es Salaam is the largest and most populous Swahili speaking city in the world. It is the capital of the Dar es Salaam Region administrative province and consists of three boroughs or administrative districts: northern Kinondoni, central Ilala, and southern Temeke. The city is the leading arriving and leaving point for most tourists who visit tourism areas in Tanzania like the national parks for safaris and the islands of Zanzibar. The region had a population of 4,364,541 as of the official 2012 census. Although Dar es Salaam lost its status as the nation's capital to Dodoma in 1974 (not completed until 1996), it remains the focus of the permanent central government bureaucracy. Most decisions made by people in power within the city of Dar es Salaam affect the entire nation of Tanzania.
Dar es Salaam Region is one of Tanzania's 30 administrative regions. The regional capital is the city of Dar es Salaam. According to the 2012 national census, the region had a population of 4,364,541, which was much higher than the pre-census projection of 3,270,255. For 2002-2012, the region's 5.6 percent average annual population growth rate was the highest in the country. It was also the most densely populated region with 3,133 people per square kilometer.
Districts
Dar es Salaam Region is divided into three administrative districts. The regional commissioner is Said Mecksadiki.
Transport
The most common form of transport in Dar es salaam are the public buses, called dala dala, which are often found at the major bus ternimals of Mwenge and Ubungo. The city also hosts transportation to various places on motorcycles and Bajaj.
The major places to visit in Dar include the Makumbusho cultural museum center at kijitonyama, the museum in the city center, Mlimani shopping mall, slipway among others. Dar es Salaam boasts of luxury hotels and beaches, some of the major hotels include the Movenpick, Kempinski Kilimanjaro, Peacock, Whitesands and many more
The Dar es Salaam Stock Exchange (DSE) is a stock exchange located in Dar es Salaam, the commercial capital and largest city in Tanzania. It was incorporated in September 1996 and trading started in April 1998. It is a member of the African Stock Exchanges Association. The exchange is open five days a week, from Monday through Friday. The trading days are weekly from Monday to Friday, starting from 10.00 am to 14.00 pm.
The activities of the exchange are monitored and supervised by the Capital Markets and Securities Authority (CMSA). The DSE operates in close association with the Nairobi Securities Exchange in Kenya and the Uganda Securities Exchange in Uganda. Plans are underway to integrate the three to form a single East African bourse.
History
Incorporation
The Dar es Salaam Stock Exchange was established by the capital markets and security authority under the Capital Markets and Securities (CMS) Act of 1994 in Dar-es-salaam, Tanzania. The stock exchange was incorporated on 19 September 1996. The company was incorporated as a private company limited by guarantee and not having a share capital under the Companies Ordinate, therefore the DSE is a non-profit making body.
A stock exchange or bourse is an exchange where stock brokers and traders can buy and/or sell stocks (also called shares), bonds, and other securities. Stock exchanges may also provide facilities for issue and redemption of securities and other financial instruments, and capital events including the payment of income and dividends. Securities traded on a stock exchange include stock issued by listed companies, unit trusts, derivatives, pooled investment products and bonds. Stock exchanges often function as "continuous auction" markets, with buyers and sellers consummating transactions at a central location, such as the floor of the exchange.
To be able to trade a security on a certain stock exchange, it must be listed there. Usually, there is a central location at least for record keeping, but trade is increasingly less linked to such a physical place, as modern markets use electronic networks, which gives them advantages of increased speed and reduced cost of transactions. Trade on an exchange is restricted to brokers who are members of the exchange. In recent years, various other trading venues, such as electronic communication networks, alternative trading systems and "dark pools" have taken much of the trading activity away from traditional stock exchanges.
Lyrically, "Stock Exchange" deals with the life of a high end Wall Street businesslady. The lyrics support this, including how the men "touch her bum in the lift of the Empire State [building]". And also the lyrics, "Is it real this pink punk costume I wear?
All the time to seduce Japanese 'hommes d'affaire' [English:businessmen]." She also has suicidal ideations as she sings that she is "dreaming of a hot bath, cutting my veins."
Composition
"Stock Exchange" is credited as an electroclash song with disco and rave influences.
Critical reception
Mark Beaumont of NME said that Miss Kittin "monotones like a German robot Cheeky Girl over some nifty Vice City disco, prompting a moral debate on whether its possible to sexually assualt (sic) a lift tannoy system."
