Dannevirke – The Viking Wall Across Denmark
In the Danish folklore, there is a myth about why and how Dannevirke was built. Sometime in the middle of the 9 century, Otto the Great, who was the King of East Francia, wanted to get the Danes under his thumb so he could collect taxes from them.

Dannevirke High School Wharekai: Nourishing the school community | Massey University
This short film documents how Dannevirke High School utilised funding from the Ministry of Education's Ka Ora, Ka Ako Healthy School Lunches programme to transform an old hostel into a vibrant community wharekai that provides free healthy kai for students and brings people together.
Capturing diverse voices of students and staff, it highlights the cultural richness of the wharekai, the focus on good nutrition, and the positive impacts it has had on relationships and learning at the school. The film has been created by researchers from the School of Health Sciences, Massey University: Associate Professor Chrissy Severinsen, Associate Professor Bevan Erueti, Taranaki, Te Atihaunui-a-Pāpārangi, Ngāti Tūwharetoa, and Dr Angelique Reweti, Ngāpuhi.

Driver's Eye View (New Zealand) - Palmerston North to Dannevirke via the breathtaking Manawatū Gorge
In this video we travel through the dramatic Manawatu Gorge with Steam Incorporated aboard a lovingly restored train of vintage red carriages hauled by a 1955 vintage General Motors diesel locomotive No.DA1410
Our special excursion train, the “Hawkes Bay Wine and Food by Rail” began it's journey at Paekakariki, in this video we pick the train up at Palmerston North for the run to Dannevirke and TakaPau where we were transferred by bus to the Oruawharo Homestead and St Vincent's for wine tasting and a light lunch.
DA 1410, picks up speed as we head along the North Island Main Trunk (NIMT) to its junction with the Palmerston North - Gisbourne Line (PNGL) where we take the PNGL towards the Gorge, passing through pleasant countryside to Ashhurst, where we cross the Pohangina River on...

Dannevirke - an unknown town with falls & beaches
Over Easter I decided to base myself in a small town called Dannevirke. It's enjoyable setting a slower travel pace and I'm in this for the long run so why not 5 night in one place? I'd only recently heard of Dannevirke as different people mentioned how nice the campground was. The town is on the main route between Hawkes Bay and Palmerston North and one I had previously driven through without taking much notice.
The town seems to have a viking flavour... I'm still not sure why. Where did the name come from? There's a viking ship in the children's playground and viking shields on the town railing.
I'll admit that there is not a whole lot to do in Dannevirke... There's a couple of nice looking restaurants and a good size supermarket. I've heard about a fantasy cave but guessing it's aimed...

DA 1410, picks up speed as we head along the North Island Main Trunk (NIMT) to its junction with the Palmerston North - Gisbourne Line (PNGL) where we take the PNGL towards the Gorge, passing through pleasant countryside to Ashhurst, where we cross the Pohangina River on a long trestle bridge, shortly after crossing the bridge we see a large crane working on the new road bridge over the Manawatu River, part of the new State Highway 3 avoiding the gorge. As we pass the worksite we enter legendary Manawatu gorge proper, no longer traversed by road due to a severe landslip that closed the road to all traffic. With no likelihood of it ever opening again, the gorge can only be seen from the railway or the river itself. Cautiously the driver eases our train along a ledge cut into the rock face carrying the line high above the muddy waters of the Manawatu River, our train edges slowly over a succession precarious bridges, squeezing through narrow tunnels, punctuated with breath taking views of the gorge fore and aft. This is no trip for the faint hearted, we pass the remnants of previous rock slips, the result of earthquakes or torrential rain reminding us of nature’s awesome power, finally our little train of red carriages climbs out of the stupendous gorge, to speed across lush green pastures to Woodville and onto Dannevirke.
