Daniel "Dan" Graham (born March 31, 1942) is an American artist, writer, and curator.
Graham grew up in New Jersey. In 1964 he began directing the John Daniels Gallery in New York, where he put on Sol LeWitt's first one-man show, and in groups shows, exhibited works of Donald Judd, Dan Flavin and Robert Smithson. Like these artists, Graham considered himself a writer-artist, publishing essays and reviews on rock music, Dwight D. Eisenhower's paintings, and Dean Martin's television show. His earliest work dealt with the magazine page, predating but often associated with Conceptual art. His work often focuses on cultural phenomena, and incorporates photography, video, performance art, glass and mirror structures. He lives and works in New York.
Dan Graham was born in Urbana, Illinois, the son of a chemist and an educational psychologist. When he was 3, Graham moved from Illinois to Winfield Township, New Jersey, and then to nearby Westfield when he was 14. He had no formal education after high school and is self-educated. During his teens, reading included Margaret Mead, Claude Lévi-Strauss, the literary critic Leslie Fiedler and the French Nouveau Roman writers. He wanted to be a writer, loved rock music which he wrote about critically and because he couldn't afford art supplies his early art took the form of magazine "articles".
Daniel Jay Graham (born July 19, 1954 in Ray, Arizona) is an American former professional baseball player who appeared in 143 games in the Major Leagues — largely as a catcher — for the Minnesota Twins (1979) and Baltimore Orioles (1980–1981). He threw right-handed, batted left-handed, stood 6 feet 1 inch (1.85 m) tall and weighed 205 pounds (93 kg).
Graham broke into professional baseball as a third baseman. He was selected by the Twins in the fifth round of the 1975 Major League Baseball Draft and three times exceeded 20 home runs during his minor league career. After debuting in MLB by going hitless in two June games for the 1979 Twins, he was acquired by Baltimore that off-season and optioned to the Triple-A Rochester Red Wings to begin the 1980 campaign. In 16 games, he batted .346 with four home runs, earning a call-up to the Orioles in May. In his second game, May 10 against the Milwaukee Brewers at County Stadium, he started at catcher and collected his first MLB hit, and homer, off Lary Sorensen. In his next two starts, May 13–14 against the Texas Rangers at Memorial Stadium, Graham had seven hits in nine at bats, including his second big-league home run. His success at the plate led manager Earl Weaver to use him on a semi-regular basis, along with right-handed-hitting Rick Dempsey. Graham started 65 games at catcher, with Dempsey starting 95.
“Don’t make art as a career,” says award-winning American artist Dan Graham. “Because that means you’re just doing the same boring things that you reacted against in the beginning.” In this short interview Dan Graham offers advice to younger artists by tallying up the best and worst things about art schools: visiting many different artists, going on class excursions and having access to books are all important opportunities for the young artist. Also art schools might give access to technical schools so you can earn a living. The worst? “Trying to make art theoretical and misuse of the word ‘problematize’,” says Graham with a tongue-in-cheek poke at the contemporary art world. Furthermore Dan Graham advises young artists to go and experience great art in museums. Dan Graham (b. 1942) is...
“I think I’m recreating childhood desires.” A unique insight into how the iconic optical, distorted pavilions by award-winning artist Dan Graham mirror his troubled childhood and early experience with mental illness. “Maybe it’s because I had an unhappy childhood, but I was very conscious of family groups,” says Graham of his early photographs of people’s suburban houses. His mother, who worked as an educational psychologist, was very “cool and cold” and had a very intellectual approach, which Graham turned physical in his art: “My mother was in denial of the body, whereas my work became about body art and about the body.” Due to her work, his mother spent a lot of time with small children on the playgrounds, and though Graham disliked these playgrounds he has nonetheless been inspired b...
The legendary artist Dan Graham doesn’t see himself as a conceptual artist. ”I hate conceptual art. I don’t believe in it. It’s bullshit” ”I situate my work as a hybrid between literature, philosophy and dance...halfway between art and design” Dan Graham talks about his art, and what he is exploring and investigating as an artist. The artwork in this video is Dan Graham’s site-specific installation atop The Metropolitan Museum of Art’s Iris and B. Gerald Cantor Roof Garden comprising curves of steel and two-way mirrored glass between ivy hedgerows. The pavilion responding to it’s specific site, reflecting the modernist skyscraper facades, the idyllic Central Park and the viewers engaging with the piece. The piece was on view April 29th through November 2nd 2014 Dan Graham (b 1942) has...
Dan Graham on Neo-Baroque Walkway, which was presented at Galerie Marian Goodman, Paris from November 7, 2019 to January 11, 2020.
Artist Dan Graham tells us about his work and life in his own words. Having no formal education after high-school, Graham is self-educated. His work consists of performance art, installations, video, sculpture, and photography, firmly based within conceptual art practice. His on-going series of free-standing sculptural objects referred to as pavilions, blur the line between art and architecture. These pavilions, expressly created for the public experience, made primarily of reflective and transparent glass or mirror, with steel, wood or other materials, displace viewers from their usual surroundings, disorienting them and creating an unusual perception of space. Real-life policeman Dan Graham proves that as well as walking the beat, he can also move to it, as he impresses the panel (especially David) with his body-popping dance routine.
