Nicola Sturgeon's flagship hybrid ferry runs on diesel as battery too expensive to fix
It was hailed by the former first minister as a symbol of the SNP but the MV Hallaig's electric battery can't be replaced and it will take bosses 18 months to fix it.
But the battery broke on the £10million vessel in September and bosses have admitted it could be April 2025 before it’s fixed because the replacement part is no longer available.

Mass exoneration for Post Office victims and cuts to Scottish education | Planet Holyrood
The Prime Minister has announced he is introducing legislation to overturn the convictions of sub-postmasters in England and Wales, with Humza Yousaf following suit in a UK-wide plan.
It is estimated that more than 700 people across the UK were wrongly prosecuted by the Post Office between 2000 and 2014 as a result of the faulty Horizon system installed by IT giant Fujitsu.
Meanwhile, hundreds of university places for Scots students will be slashed as part of government budget cuts, a top SNP minister has admitted. Shona Robison told MSPs this week that 1,200 spaces for first year undergraduates would be axed.
A new opinion poll also shows Keir Starmer’s Labour is in line for a 120-seat majority at the general election.

Armed police swooped on the scene while medics tended to the 36-year-old victim.
Sources said Webley was partying with pals when the incident happened.
Scots Euromillions winner Jane Park recently dated Webley but is said to have called time on their relationship three weeks ago.

Marc Webley was gunned down at around 11.50pm outside the Anchor Inn in the Granton area of the city late on Sunday, December 31.
The 38-year-old was reportedly shot in the head and later died in hospital. A second man, 39, was also injured during the ambush and remains in a serious but stable condition.
Detectives are now appealing for help to trace a red Hyundai Tucson which they believe was used during the attack. They say at least one other person was inside the vehicle before it made off in an eastwards direction towards Leith.

Rishi Sunak plays down dire poll figures amid warnings of election wipeout
Prime Minister Rishi Sunak has played down polling suggesting that the Tories could be on course for a 1997-style wipeout at the next general election.
It comes after a major opinion poll indicated Labour could be on course for a 120-seat majority in the election expected later this year.
A YouGov survey of 14,000 people indicates that the Prime Minister’s party could hold on to as few as 169 seats as Sir Keir Starmer’s Labour enters Downing Street with 385.
The polling, reported by the Telegraph, indicated that every so-called “red wall” seat won by Boris Johnson in 2019 could be lost at the general election this year.
Speaking in Essex, Mr Sunak insisted that the only poll that matters “is the one when the general election comes”.
Chancellor Jeremy Hunt could be one of 11 Cabinet mi...

Murder cops probing the shooting of a convicted gangland gunman outside an Edinburgh pub on Hogmanay are hunting for a red vehicle used by the suspects.
Speaking at a press conference in Edinburgh, Detective Superintendent Graham Grant said: "A red Hyundai Tucson pulled up besides two men on West Granton Road. A man left the car and discharged a firearm before getting back in.
"We are doing everything possible to identify and trace whoever is responsible. We are appealing for any information or footage of the suspect vehicle and its movements before and after the incident."

Nicola Sturgeon has been accused of a "shocking betrayal" over the deletion of all her WhatsApp messages during the pandemic.
Jamie Dawson KC, counsel to the UK Covid Inquiry, told the probe the former First Minister had retained no messages "whatsoever”.
At a hearing today, Dawson said: “Under the box ‘Nicola Sturgeon’, it says that messages were not retained, they were deleted in routine tidying up of inboxes or changes of phones, unable to retrieve messages.
“What that tends to suggest is at the time that request was made Nicola Sturgeon, the former first minister of Scotland, had retained no messages whatsoever in connection with her management of the pandemic.”
Lesley Fraser, the director general corporate of the Scottish government, agreed saying: “That’s what that indicates to me.”
Sturgeon, who led Scotland through the pandemic, has previously refused to say whether her messages were deleted.
Sturgeon has been under huge pressure after it was reported last year her WhatsApp messages during the pandemic had been deleted.
The messages are believed to be crucial in gaining a full understanding of why key pandemic decisions were made.

Chancellor Jeremy Hunt could be one of 11 Cabinet ministers to lose their seats in what would be the biggest collapse in support for a governing party since 1906, according to the newspaper.
Mr Sunak told broadcasters: “There have been lots of polls over the last year, there will be hundreds more polls.”
“The choice at that election is clear, it’s stick with our plan that is working, it’s delivering change for people, ensuring they can have the peace of mind that there is a brighter future for their children and we can have renewed pride in our country.”

Slain gangster Marc Webley goaded his enemies to 'come to the pub' but warned someone would 'come to the grave with him' in a series of new videos.
The 38-year-old was shot at around 11.50pm on Hogmanay outside the Anchor Inn in Edinburgh’s Granton area.
Before his death, convicted gunman Marc repeatedly posted videos on social media urging his rivals to come after him before being gunned down in an ambush minutes before the bells.
In the pair of videos obtained by the Record, above, Webley is seen talking to the camera.
Murder cops told on Tuesday how they are hunting for a red vehicle used by the shooting suspects.
Webley was reportedly shot in the head and later died in hospital. A second man, 39, was also injured during the ambush and remains in a serious but stable condition.
Webley was cleared in 2022 of attempted murder when he was accused of trying to ram a car off the road in Edinburgh.
In 2006 he was convicted of being the gunman in a gangland-style ambush on a Kawasaki motorbike and jailed for eleven years.
