In 1969 Union Pacific was retiring the later gas turbine-electric locomotives. Union Pacific had ordered EMD DD35s and DD35As to replace the turbines, and the DDA40X was a further development. Forty seven were built between June 1969 and September 1971, except the first one delivered in April in time to participate in the celebrations of the centennial anniversary of the completion of the Transcontinental Railroad driving the "Gold Spike Limited" and arriving in Salt Lake City, Utah, on the morning of May 10, 1969. The units were numbered from 6900 to 6946, with 6936 still in service.

In depth look at the DDA40X #6922 Worlds largest diesel locomotive
Enjoy this in depth look at the DDA40X. This locomotive is a engineering marvel, and I ended up going back to North Platte 5 more times for additional filming. In the end I had several hundred scenes which took a long time to edit. But I think it turned out pretty good and it's a rare look at nearly every aspect of the DDA40X.
These locomotives were built by the Electro Motive Division of General motors from 1969-1971. There was 47 locomotives produced. Eleven locomotives have survived and are in museums. One locomotive is operational (Union Pacific #6936 currently in overhaul), and another locomotive is used for spare parts. The DDA40X weighs 545,000 lb (247,000 kg), is 98 ft 5 in (30.00 m) long, and can produce 113,940 lbs of tractive effort. It has two 654E3 16 cylinder diesel engines...

Engines of Union Pacific Episode 6, DDA40X/Centennial
Today we take a look at possibly the one of most recognizable diesel locomotive from Union Pacific. This locomotive fleet had an extremely interesting history that you you will learn today on this episode.
Also be ready to hear 69 be said more than you ever probably will in most videos.
Edit: As of November 2022, 6936 has been donated to the Railroading Heritage of Midwest America, with plans to return the locomotive to operation.

The Strangest Ho Locomotive I've Ever Seen - 1980s Bachmann DD40AX W/Sound
I've worked on many different locomotives over the years however I have never come across something as unusual as this 1980's DD40AX "Centennial" locomotive from Bachmann. This loco includes features such as directional lighting as well as a blinking yard light however the feature that makes it unusual is a built in horn sound system as well as a controller which wires into your DC power pack and a built-in battery pack inside the loco to power the speaker. I really enjoyed figuring out how everything went together.

These locomotives were some of the most successful, most loved, and most reliable locomotives Union Pacific ever owned. Union Pacific used these locomotives non stop racking up millions of miles over the years. In just 10 short years these locomotives were totally worn out from years of hard use.
This locomotive is open to the public during the Summer months including the cab. Check this website for information for hours of the Cody Railroad Park in North Platte, Nebraska https://visitnorthplatte.com/directory-posts/cody-park-railroad-museum/
