When his moods shifted, he would retreat to his bedroom, isolating himself from others. These episodes made him question if there was something deeper at play.
It wasn't until Tom reached his early twenties that he decided to seek professional help. He went to the doctor and ...

In this heartfelt video, Tom opens up about his personal journey of receiving a diagnosis of cyclothymia, also known as baby bipolar disorder. Cyclothymia refers to a mood cycle that is more extreme than normal, but not as severe as bipolar disorder. Tom shares how having this knowledge and diagnosis became the most significant step in his life.
From an early age, Tom's behaviour led people to assume he had ADHD or was simply a troublemaker. He would have temper tantrums and act out, but there was more to his story. When his moods shifted, he would retreat to his bedroom, isolating himself from others. These episodes made him question if there was something deeper at play.
It wasn't until Tom reached his early twenties that he decided to seek professional help. He went to the doctor and explained that he experienced intense periods of happiness and sadness. The doctor initially brushed it off as a normal part of life's natural cycles, like seasonal affective disorder. However, Tom persisted and explained how he would pour his heart and soul into a project, only to later delete it and regret his actions.
After several visits to psychiatrists and further diagnosis discussions, it was confirmed that Tom exhibited symptoms aligned with cyclothymia. Finally, Tom had a concrete explanation for his emotional rollercoaster. This diagnosis was a turning point for him because he realised he wasn't just a misbehaving or impulsive person. He had an underlying condition that could be addressed and managed.
Armed with this newfound knowledge, Tom discovered his triggers, symptoms, and the distinction between his authentic self and the influence of cyclothymia. It became clear that during his low moods, he needed time alone, and by communicating this to his loved ones, they understood his need for space and support.
This video is an honest and vulnerable account of Tom's experience. By sharing his story, he hopes to raise awareness about cyclothymia, reduce the stigma surrounding mental health, and inspire others who may be going through similar struggles to seek help and find solace in their diagnosis. Join Tom as he sheds light on his journey towards self-understanding and acceptance.

So bipolar 1 disorder includes depressive episodes and also manic episodes which are the full extreme of the elevated moods. Individuals have limitless energy, limitless confidence and end up getting themselves into trouble either by taking on too much or ignoring risks and getting arrested or getting admitted in hospitals. Individuals of bipolar 2 do have depressive episodes and they do have pervasive elevated moods but the purasive elevated moods are to the extreme of mania. It's what called hypermania where individuals do have increased energy and some increase in confidence but it doen't get them into trouble. Then there are individuals who have cyclothymia. In cyclothymia, individuals when their mood is elevated its similar to a hypermanic episode not getting very extreme. And also their depressive episodes are also not very extreme. They dont get fully depressed. They just have period of low mood and a cycle between periods of low mood and periods of elevated mood. Then there's also another category thats informally referred to bipolar 3. And this is one where an individual develops symptoms of mania but its introduced between medication because anti-depressive medication can trigger manic episode and manic symptoms. But we would like to categorize that as a separate situation when its triggered by the medications prescribed. because the idea is that without the medication, the individuals probably would not hav any symptoms. So thats the break down of the different kinds of bipolars.
