New light for the films of the Custody of the Holy Land
This is what the Holy Land looked like in the middle of the last century.
Historical images from the films produced by the Custody of the Holy Land between 1948 and the 70s. These now deteriorated originals have been given a new lease of life thanks to the restoration and digitisation carried out by Cineteca di Milano on behalf of the Holy Land Foundation. The Custody of the Holy Land, a mission for education
Forming new generations, promoting knowledge and research are some of the activities promoted by the Custody of the Holy Land in the field of education. The testimonies of Br. Ibrahim , Vicar, and Br. Rosario, Dean of the Studium Biblicum Franciscanum, will help us to understand the commitment that the Custody of the Holy Land faces and how, also thanks to the Good Friday Collection, it can support the living stones that live in this land.
The first school in the Middle East was founded in Bethlehem in 1598. Today we have 17 schools; there are more than 12,000 students, both Christian and Muslim. There are 1,200 teachers.
Our schools are located in Bethlehem, Jerusalem, Nazareth, Akko, Haifa, Jericho, as well as in Jordan, Cyprus and Argentina.

These now deteriorated originals have been given a new lease of life thanks to the restoration and digitisation carried out by Cineteca di Milano on behalf of the Holy Land Foundation. A total of 37 titles, with an average running time of between 9 and 20 minutes.
"Christmas in Bethlehem", also available on Youtube, takes us back to Christmas 1954, when the city was still under Jordanian control.
"Muslims themselves spontaneously offer their enthusiasm and their service of honour to the Child. Everyone today is fascinated by the great Mystery".
Rituals and traditions remain unchanged, such as the playing of bagpipes, now entrusted to the scouts, the solemn entrance of the Patriarch and his welcome to the square in front of the Basilica of the Nativity, the greetings to the authorities and the entrance into the Basilica in procession with the friars.
"The silver star of the Latins marks the place where that newborn child who moved the stars was placed".
And today, as then, after the night Mass, the brothers go down to the Grotto of the Nativity to lay the Child.
"Here the shepherds saw him, here the star revealed him, here he was adored by the Magi, here the angels sang 'Glory in the highest'".
Crusaders Without Arms was made in 1955 with professional equipment and tells the story of the Franciscans in the Holy Land.
"A century had not passed since the conquest of the Holy Sepulchre, when Christian power collapsed because of the discord and ambitions of the princes. It was then that a simple man, without an escort or weapons, rich only in faith and enthusiasm, dared to realise an ancient dream".
"Humble in his strange habit, with bare hands and bare feet, Francis confronts the Saracen armies and the Sultan himself. He fascinates him, conquers him and obtains his consent for himself and his friars to live in that blessed land".
The films are "high level amateur", often produced by semi-professional directors. They were initially intended for a limited audience, but have also been used in catechesis and promotion of the Holy Land, helping to spread "the message and the grace of the Holy Places".

Our schools are located in Bethlehem, Jerusalem, Nazareth, Akko, Haifa, Jericho, as well as in Jordan, Cyprus and Argentina.
Next year we will open a new school in Cana. The school and a pastoral center will be built next to the shrine. All our parishes in the Holy Land have a school.
Br IBRAHIM FALTAS, ofm - Vicar of the Custody of the Holy Land
There are two other services that the Custody of the Holy Land offers that are directed toward improving the conditions of people's lives and enabling them to remain in this land with a modicum of dignity: housing and jobs.
"In the Old City we have 400 houses that we offer for free to families. The Custody of the Holy Land renovates the houses at its own expense; this can cost up to $2 million. Outside the Old City of Jerusalem we have 250 apartments. We also have houses in Bethlehem, Nazareth and Jaffa."
"We have more than 2,000 employees working for the Custody of the Holy Land." Br IBRAHIM FALTAS, ofm - Vicar of the Custody of the Holy Land
New jobs, care of holy places. The pro terra sancta collection is also crucial in these areas.
"The Studium Biblicum Franciscanum was conceived in 1901 and began as a research center for archaeology, theology and exegesis. It was officially founded in the academic year 1923/1924; in fact, next year we will celebrate the centennial of the founding of our school.
In 1960 it became an integral part of the Pontifical Antonianum University in Rome, and in 2001 it became a faculty of biblical sciences and archaeology. It is attended by students from all over the world. Living here in the holy land for several years brings with it a wealth of culture and formation that they can then share with their students, the priests of their dioceses and the friars of their provinces.
The Studium has a fine library that now counts more than 60,000 volumes.
Also connected to the school is a museum that is very important for the very history of Christianity: it bears witness to early Christianity in Palestine.
Br ROSARIO PIERRI, ofm - Studium Biblicum Franciscanum Dean
Alongside these activities there are others. We hold conferences and organize a biblical theological refresher course which, this year, will take place from April 11 to 14.
By helping the Custody of the Holy Land you also help our school!"
