Crown Center is a commercial complex and neighborhood located near Downtown Kansas City, Missouri located between Gillham Road and Grand Boulevard to the east and west, and between Pershing Boulevard and Union Hill to the north and south. The shopping center is anchored by Halls, a department store which is owned and operated by Hallmark Cards. The neighborhood contains numerous residences, retail establishments, entertainment venues, and restaurants (including the American Restaurant, the only Forbes Travel Guide four-star restaurant in Missouri). It is also home to Kansas City's two largest hotels, the global headquarters of Hallmark Cards, and the headquarters of Shook, Hardy & Bacon and Lathrop & Gage, two of Kansas City's largest law firms.
History
Before the First World War, Downtown Kansas City was heavily populated and bustling. The area today home to Crown Center was an extension of the Union Hill historic neighborhood. Gradually, however, the center of population for the metro area moved south, and by the Second World War the area today comprising Crown Center had become dilapidated. Although Hallmark had maintained its headquarters at 26th Street and Grand Avenue since 1922, the headquarters itself and nearby Union Station comprised the only non-slum in the area. Instead, what there was were old warehouses, used car lots, and vacant buildings.
CROWN CENTER SHUTS DOWN A SUMMER TRADITION - KCPT - Kansas City Week in Review
It's not summer in Kansas City for many families with small children, without a cool down at the Crown Center fountains. But that decades long tradition is now over. Crown Center is adopting a zero tolerance policy. No more splashing and cavorting in its water. Some surprised parents are now threatening a boycott of the shopping area. The Crown Center Story
In 1967, founders of Hallmark Cards J.C. and Don Hall delivered their plans for a brand new development center to City Hall. This development came to be Crown Center, a "city within a city," and a place to experience the original, rather than the expected. Through years of continued growth, Crown Center has remained the cornerstone of urban renewal in Kansas City, a shining testament of the innovation of the Hall family and a collection of Kansas City's best offerings.

KANSAS CITY: Crown Center
KANSAS CITY, MO - (CBS2/FOX28) It may seem that texting Merry Christmas or hitting the like button on someone's Facebook birthday message is now the popular way to extend well wishes, but somebody is still sending out more than 6 Billion greeting cards every year! A big share of those come from the city we're visiting all this week. Joyce Hall was ahead of his time in so many ways. First he noticed the popularity of post cards and started his own company. Then after moving to Kansas City he proposed an idea that was revolutionary for its time. He wanted to build a Hallmark greeting card campus. Not just a company headquarters, but a place surrounded by entertainment, food and shopping for his employees and everyone else. Our ROAD TRIPPIN' adventure continues to check out his dream...
