Founded as a private company under the name Business Flyers Basel AG by Moritz Suter, it changed to Crossair on 18 November 1978, before the beginning of scheduled services on 2 July 1979 with flights from Zürich to Nuremberg, Innsbruck and Klagenfurt. It was headquartered at Zürich International Airport in Kloten in 1985.
It added charter services for major shareholder Swissair in November 1995. On 31 March 2002, Swissair passed out of existence as
most of its assets were taken over by Crossair which then changed names to Swiss International Air Lines.
Crossair Flight 498 was a commuter flight from Zurich, Switzerland, to Dresden, Germany, that crashed two minutes after takeoff in the Swiss municipality of Niederhasli on 10 January 2000. The seven passengers and three crew members aboard the two-turboprop engine Saab 340B aircraft all died on impact. It was the first fatal crash for the Swiss regional airline Crossair in its 25-year history.
The official report into the disaster found that the crash was due to a loss of control resulting from multiple human failures.
Background
The 33-seat Saab 340B airplane used for Crossair Flight LX498 had been leased to Crossair from Moldavian Airlines since 1 October 1999. The plane was scheduled to depart from Zurich Airport on Monday, 10 January 2000, at around 6:00p.m. and arrive at Dresden Airport a few hours later. The cold, drizzly weather was normal for the area, there were no indications that anything was wrong with the aircraft, and, although this particular aircraft had 24,000 flying hours since its November 1990 delivery, this type of airplane had a very good safety record. Captain Pavel Gruzin, 41, had 8,100 hours of flying time, with 1,900 in the Saab 340 type. Co-pilot Rastislav Kolesar, 35, had about 1,800 total hours, with 1,100 hours in the Saab 340 type. The plane was carrying no unusual payload such as freight or mail and the plane was not due for its next regular maintenance check for another 21 days, on 31 January 2000.

When the boarding was completed, crew got Permission to start engines. While the crew waited for taxi clearance, a few points of the taxi checklist were performed. Then the flight was cleared to the holding position of runway 28.
The aircraft began its take-off roll and it was already dark at that time.
The Captain was flying the aircraft. The climb was stable with a pitch of 15° nose up.
The initial flight path, at a heading of 276°, followed the centre line of the runway. After the request from TWR, the crew switched to the departure control frequency.
Then ATC issued the instruction to turn to VOR ZUE and that was acknowledged by the first officer.
At this time the aircraft reached waypoint DME 2.1 KLO. And now the aircraft should turn left according to the departure procedure.
According to their procedure flight was turning left and the bank angle to the left reached a maximum of 16.9° on a compass heading of 270°.
After the aircraft had remained at a 16° bank angle to the left, it began to turn to the right and the bank angle rate increased to 3°/s to the right.
In this time the first officer was very busy carrying out the orders issued by the commander.
When the bank angle reached 8.4° to the right, the nose
of the aircraft began to drop from 14.2° to 10.8°.
The right bank angle increased to 31.0°.
The bank angle stabilized between 39° and 42°. And the pitch reduced further and stabilized at a value of 1°.
Then the Right aileron input from the captain caused the aircraft increase in right roll rate.
The first officer advised the captain that the aircraft should actually turn to the left. Which was also noted by the Zurich departure controller.
By now the bank angle was increased to 80° to the right. Because of the high bank angle, the aircraft pitched to 25° nose down . The aircraft started loosing altitude with the speed 207 kts.
After a maximum bank angle of 137° to the right, The aircraft went into a spiral dive. The climb power was set to the engines. So the engines still provided high power.
By now the nose of the aircraft had dropped 63° down with a bank angle of 76° to the right. From now it was impossible to recover. The aircraft crashed in an open field. None of the three crew members and seven passengers survived the impact.
Investigation:
The experts concluded that the captain lost spatial orientation in the dark sky which caused the aircraft to dive in the attempt to correct an excessive bank angle in the wrong direction.
Another problem they found with the captain was lack of proficiency in English which might have caused confusion.
The Captain had flown Russian built aircrafts. And in those aircrafts, the attitude is displayed by a moving aircraft symbol in front of a fixed horizon, just opposite of western aircraft. So when the aircraft was turning left, the captain might have thought it was turned to right and he attempted to turn left.

In a lot of air accidents, pilot error plays some kind of role. The degree to which Pilot Error contributes to an accident can vary. Sometimes, pilot error can blossom in the form of sheer incompetence from the pilot as was with one such pilot flying a Swiss regional jet on its final Approach into Zurich. Crossair Flight 3597 crashed a few miles short of the runway at Zurich killing 24 people. How did the pilot flying handle the approach? And what sort of history did this pilot have?

FLIGHT CROSSAIR SAAB 340B HB-AKA ZURICH-LEIPZIG
Summer time is flying time.
Winter time is editing time.
I am now starting to work on my oldest footages, starting in 1993, using Hi8 analogue tapes. Quality is partially horrible and editing and scene cutting this material is a true nightmare. Nevertheless it is worth its while taking all the trouble to save these memories for the future.
This inflight video features a flight onboard Crossair from Zurich to Leipzig. Crossair set new standards and earned a high reputation for its excellent inflight service a quarter of a century ago.
History of Saab 340B HB-AKA
Airframe 160 was manufactured 1989 with test registration SE-F60
and delivered to Crossair, registered HB-AKA, September 15, 1989.
Sold to Moldavian Airlines, registered ER-SGC, August 3, 2001. Sold to Loganair and registered G-LGNI, April 25, 2005. Operated for Flybe under the same registration after October 26, 2008 and is reported active.
Enjoy with me the Sights & Sounds of Classic Aviation.
Thank you for watching my channel.

Crossair Flight 498 was a commuter flight from Zurich, Switzerland to Dresden, Germany.
On board the flight were 7 passengers and 3 crew members.

I am twice your age, but you don’t want to see Height of naivety, as only real young girls can be Kiss kiss I love you, no I love you more Begging, pleading me to stop pushing on your gasping throat A blossoming youthfulness is so arousing to me You’re so easy to break Don’t you realize that I won’t stop? A nose is easy to break You fulfil my wildest dreams Now I finally understand the real pride of ownership I control you from the mouth down Get on your hands and feet for me Urinating on the floor and barking like a little dog I control you from the mouth down Give me your anus Feed from my penis Cute little sobs for help make everything complete Lesson for today, a lizard has no empathy Damsel in distress, you certainly fit the part For you it’s good to know that life sometimes can be, To cruel, to hard Pushing though your psyche Your mother would be so proud You’re truly beneath me Ravaging your psyche Faecal froth foams from the mouth I want you to swallow my pee Cry for me delicately Looking up inside of me Mana from my colon Nauseating romance Eating chunks from me Butterfly, you’ve become, crawling from your pupa Not just the girl next door Now so much more then you were before A new white human toilet Come lick my anus
