Cronulla riots | Dumb, Drunk & Racist | Starts Wednesday, 20 June, 9.30pm, ABC2
http://www.facebook.com/ABC2.au Australians get a bad rap overseas, and our stocks seem especially low in India. In fact, a sizeable chunk of India's 1.2 billion people think Aussies are dumb, drunk and racist. But doesn't every country have its negative stereotypes? In this six-part factual series, journalist Joe Hildebrand takes four Indians on a road trip around Australia to examine our worst stereotypes -- are we really beer-swilling, racist bogans, or are we simply misunderstood? Shot on location in India and across Australia, this series puts its Indian protagonists smack bang in the middle of passionate debates and immersive experiences that could change their opinion of Australia forever. After three weeks of seeing the good, the bad and the ugly up close, will our intrepid Indian ...

The 2005 Cronulla Riot: the triggers, the aftermath, and the impact on Australia | Four Corners
One Sunday in December 2005, five thousand Australians gathered at Cronulla, singing and waving the national flag as they "reclaimed" the beach. Fuelled by drink, the crowd became a mob, hunting down and beating anyone who looked Middle Eastern.
That night and the next, carloads of hundreds of young men of Middle Eastern descent headed for the beach suburbs to launch similarly random and savage acts of revenge.
The shocking TV images flashed across the world. At home, Australia's ugliness was disowned as "un-Australian". Political leaders called it a problem of law and order rather than racism.
So what should Australians make of the Cronulla explosion? Was it a nation-defining event that should sound the alarm about growing racial division? Or was it something less, a turf war, or a ...

Australia divided: after the Cronulla riots | 60 Minutes Australia
(2006) There's never been anything like it. Nothing as ugly, or shameful. Nothing as un-Australian. It all seemed so foreign - the riots, the aggression, the pure hatred in our streets. Somehow it seemed those values we hold most dear, tolerance and a fair go for everyone, were being torn apart. On the surface, it started after two lifesavers on Sydney's southern beaches were bashed by a so-called Middle Eastern gang. Then came the retaliation, the revenge. Clearly it goes much deeper. And the painful truth is it could happen again - anytime, anywhere. With that in mind, we organised a special 60 Minutes forum where both sides, Muslim and non-Muslim, sat down together for the first time, and revisited that dreadful week in December, 2006 and a city under siege.

Or was it something less, a turf war, or a clash of tribes that some have likened to the '60s rumbles between rockers and surfers?
Four Corners looked for answers not from social commentators but from the participants - the young men in the Shire who joined the seething mob, those who took part in revenge attacks, and the police who were stuck in the middle.
From these and other testimonies award-winning reporter Liz Jackson presents the definitive account of the riot at Cronulla and its aftermath, as told by those who were there.
Original broadcast date: March 2006.

The Cronulla Rock Pools are between Cronulla Beach and North Cronulla beach. The Alley is the local name given to the area between Cronulla Beach and North Cronulla Beach. Shark Island is a dangerous reef break, located off Cronulla Beach.
The Cronulla Surf Life Saving Club, was one of the first surf clubs established in Australia in 1907. The club started out in a tram carriage and today it is housed in an art deco building on the beachfront, that was built in 1940.
Cronulla is one of the largest and strongest clubs in the surf life saving movement with 1,200 members, including 620 in its nipper ranks. Many lifesavers volunteer their time to patrol the beaches during the season from late September to late April. Cronulla has won three World Championships encompassing all rescue and Surf Life Saving competition and has consistently placed in the top 10 clubs at the Australian championships over the past 20 years.
Cronulla beach came to international prominence with the novel and film Puberty Blues. Subsequently there Puberty Blues was made into a television serial also produced in the area as was "The Principal".
