Up On Cripple Creek - The Band (The Band 5 of 10)
UP ON CRIPPLE CREEK
The Band
The Band (1970)
When I get off of this mountain, you know where I want to go?
Straight down the Mississippi river, to the Gulf of Mexico
To Lake Charles, Louisiana, little Bessie, girl that I once knew
She told me just to come on by, if there's anything she could do
Up on Cripple Creek she sends me
If I spring a leak she mends me
I don't have to speak, she defends me
A drunkard's dream if I ever did see one
Good luck had just stung me, to the race track I did go
She bet on one horse to win and I bet on another to show
The odds were in my favor, I had 'em five to one
When that nag to win came around the track, sure enough she had won
Up on Cripple Creek she sends me
If I spring a leak she mends me
I don't have to speak, she defends me

Doc Watson & Earl Scruggs Play Cripple Creek Just Having Fun
Let me put it straight out there. I loved Earl Scruggs as a musician and as a man. I also felt the same way about Dr. Watson. I also felt the same way about rules son who is just 16 years old in this documentary, Randy Scruggs. I set up the microphone, sat myself down in his seat with my handheld 16mm camera, and they just played. Having fun. On Doc Watson's front lawn at his home in the Appalachian mountains of Western North Carolina.

"Cripple Creek" with Tracy Newman on the 5-string banjo
In 1965, I did 6 episodes of a public TV series called "What's New." I presented folk songs from all over the world, and many instruments, to the best of my ability at the time. We shot these episodes at Brooklyn College and Joan Sheppard was the director.

Up On Cripple Creek - The Band - The Last Waltz
Winterland Ballroom, San Francisco, CA
1976-11-25
The Last Waltz (2002)
¡IMPORTANT!
If anyone thinks they have footage (audience or professional) or an audience recording that no one else has (or that I haven't published) and wants to make it public, they can contact me.
¡IMPORTANT!
I never liked that they shortened the songs so that the movie didn't last that long, or at least they could have given them as bonus material for the 40th anniversary

Up on Cripple Creek she sends me
If I spring a leak she mends me
I don't have to speak, she defends me
A drunkard's dream if I ever did see one
I took up all of my winnings, and I gave my little Bessie half
And she tore it up and threw it in my face, just for a laugh
Now there's one thing in the whole wide world, I sure would like to see
That's when that little love of mine, dips her doughnut in my tea
Up on Cripple Creek she sends me
If I spring a leak she mends me
I don't have to speak, she defends me
A drunkard's dream if I ever did see one
Now me and my mate were back at the shack, we had Spike Jones on the box
She said, "I can't take the way he sings, but I love to hear him talk"
Now that just gave my heart a throb, to the bottom of my feet
And I swore and I took another pull, my Bessie can't be beat
Up on Cripple Creek she sends me
If I spring a leak she mends me
I don't have to speak, she defends me
A drunkard's dream if I ever did see one
Now there's a flood out in California and up north it's freezing cold
And this living on the road is getting pretty old
So I guess I'll call up my big mama, tell her I'll be rolling in
But you know, deep down, I'm kind of tempted
To go and see my Bessie again.
Up on Cripple Creek she sends me
If I spring a leak she mends me
I don't have to speak, she defends me
A drunkard's dream if I ever did see one

Let me put it straight out there. I loved Earl Scruggs as a musician and as a man. I also felt the same way about Dr. Watson. I also felt the same way about rules son who is just 16 years old in this documentary, Randy Scruggs. I set up the microphone, sat myself down in his seat with my handheld 16mm camera, and they just played. Having fun. On Doc Watson's front lawn at his home in the Appalachian mountains of Western North Carolina.
Watch another clip from the same recording session - https://youtu.be/te_OoPaEFK0 .
My classic 90 minute music documentary records Earl Scruggs and Bill Monroe and Earl and his son Randy and Doc Watson and his son Merle, in informal scenes playing & singing together. If you love Doc Watson and Bill Monroe and old time Bluegrass Music, you will love watching and listening to this. In 1972, PBS prime-timed a documentary music special on Earl Scruggs the bluegrass banjo picker. It included Bob Dylan, The Byrds, Bill Monroe, Charlie Daniels, The Morris Brothers, and Doc Watson. The film was not available to the public for over 30 years. Now it is available again. Said Bruce Elder of The All Music Guide: "Earl Scruggs was a few years past his partnership with Lester Flatt when made did 'Earl Scruggs: The Bluegrass Banjo Legend' a filled with stars effort that succeeds. There are great scenes at the Grand Ole Opry with Bill Monroe, at the homes of Doc Watson and members of Earl's North Carolina family, at the The Byrds ranch, at the home of The Morris Brothers (Salty Dog Blues), in Carmel, NY with Bob Dylan, etc. etc. The music here is glorious." Earl Scruggs: The Bluegrass Legend is the only full-length film on Earl's life & times. #docwatson #earlscruggs #cripplecreek #banjo #northcarolina

In 1965, I did 6 episodes of a public TV series called "What's New." I presented folk songs from all over the world, and many instruments, to the best of my ability at the time. We shot these episodes at Brooklyn College and Joan Sheppard was the director.
LYRICS:
I got a gal and she loves me
She’s as sweet as sweet can be
She’s got eyes of baby blue
Makes my gun shoot straight and true.
Goin’ up Cripple Creek goin’ in a run
Goin’ up Cripple Creek to have a little fun.
Goin’ up Cripple Creek goin’ on a whirl
Goin’ up Cripple Creek to find my girl.
Cripple Creek’s wide and Cripple Creek’s deep
I’ll make Cripple Creek before I sleep
Roll my breeches to my knees
Wade ol’ Cripple Creek as I please
Goin’ up Cripple Creek goin’ in a run
Goin’ up Cripple Creek to have a little fun.
Goin’ up Cripple Creek goin’ on a whirl
Goin’ up Cripple Creek to find my girl

The Last Waltz (2002)
¡IMPORTANT!
If anyone thinks they have footage (audience or professional) or an audience recording that no one else has (or that I haven't published) and wants to make it public, they can contact me.
¡IMPORTANT!
I never liked that they shortened the songs so that the movie didn't last that long, or at least they could have given them as bonus material for the 40th anniversary
