Crib Goch

Crib Goch is described as a "knife-edged" arête in the Snowdonia National Park in Gwynedd, Wales. The name means "red ridge" in the Welsh language.

The highest point on the arête is 923 metres (3,028 ft) above sea level. All routes which tackle Crib Goch are considered mountaineering routes in winter or scrambles in summer—meaning that they must cross "graded territory" as defined in Steve Ashton's "Scrambles in Snowdonia". The easiest of these lines (the "bad step" part of the route) is given a scrambling grade of Grade 1 (the most difficult being Grade 3—routes more difficult than Grade 3 are considered rock climbs).

Route

The classic traverse of Crib Goch from East to West leads up from the Pyg track to a "bad step" where hands and feet are both needed briefly. It is followed by ascent to the arête, before tackling three rock-pinnacles to a grassy col at Bwlch Coch. This first part of the ridge is exposed with precipices below, having resulted in several fatalities, even of experienced mountaineers; the Snowdonia National Park Authority describe it as "not a mountain for the inexperienced". Moreover, on fine days the ridge may be very busy and queues can form. To avoid the long queues on the ascent from the east, it is possible to ascend Crib Goch's North Ridge, which adjoins the main ridge. It is recommended that walkers who use this route do have climbing skills and climbing equipment.

Bach (New Zealand)

A bach (pronounced 'batch') (/ˈbætʃ/; (also called a crib in the southern half of the South Island) is a small, often very modest holiday home or beach house. Baches are an iconic part of New Zealand history and culture, especially in the middle of the 20th century, where they symbolized the beach holiday lifestyle that was becoming more accessible to the middle class.

"Bach" was [thought to be] originally short for bachelor pad, but actually they often tended to be a family holiday home. An alternative theory for the origination of the word is that bach is Welsh for small, although the pronunciation of this word is somewhat different. Baches began to gain popularity in the 1950s as roads improved and the increasing availability of cars allowed for middle-class beach holidays, often to the same beach every year. With yearly return trips being made, baches began to spring up in many family vacation spots.

Construction

Post-World War II

They are almost always small structures, usually made of cheap or recycled material like fibrolite (asbestos sheets), corrugated iron or used timber. They were influenced by the backwoods cabins and sheds of the early settlers and farmers. Other baches used a caravan as the core of the structure, and built extensions on to that. Many cities were dismantling tram lines in the 1950s, and old trams were sometimes used as baches.

Known-plaintext attack

The known-plaintext attack (KPA) is an attack model for cryptanalysis where the attacker has access to both the plaintext (called a crib), and its encrypted version (ciphertext). These can be used to reveal further secret information such as secret keys and code books. The term "crib" originated at Bletchley Park, the British World War II decryption operation.

History

The usage "crib" was adapted from a slang term referring to cheating (e.g., "I cribbed my answer from your test paper.") A "crib" originally was a literal or interlinear translation of a foreign-language text — usually a Latin or Greek text — that students might be assigned to translate from the original language.

The idea behind a crib is that cryptologists were looking at incomprehensible ciphertext, but if they had a clue about some word or phrase that might be expected to be in the ciphertext, they would have a "wedge," a test to break into it. If their otherwise random attacks on the cipher managed to sometimes produce those words or (preferably) phrases, they would know they might be on the right track. When those words or phrases appeared, they would feed the settings they had used to reveal them back into the whole encrypted message to good effect.

  Winter traverse of Crib Goch! Every once in a while you get the chance to have a perfect mountain day...this was one of those days! Crib Goch is an iconic mountain ridge on Snowdon in North Wales. This route is fantastic in any season but at its best when caked in snow and lit with bright sunshine under blue skies. Crib Goch, the knife-edge ridge adjacent to Snowdon (highest mountain in Wales) is a famous Grade 1 scramble, and on 'the list' for many hikers and hillwalkers. The narrow section leading directly from the summit of Crib Goch itself is the bit that you often see on Youtube, witht he fisheye GoPro lens making it look narrower and steeper than it actually is. Those videos also miss out the more dangerous sections that come later, around Crib y Ddysgl and Garnedd Ugain. I shot this video to show what it's actually like in good conditions, and to show some of the highlights of this potentially dangerous route. Although it is still the route we get asked about most often, Crib Goch is a place where people do fall and become seriously injured, or worse. Not an hour before filming this Llanberis Mountain Rescue Team and HM Coastguard were involved in the rescue of a scrambler with a broken leg. Whilst moving along the ridge I was only a few metres away from someone else who stumbled and fell a short distance due to unsuitable footwear... fortunately he managed to catch himself before serious injury. Crib Goch, the knife-edge ridge adjacent to Snowdon (highest mountain in Wales) is a famous Grade 1 scramble, and on 'the list' for many hikers and hillwalkers. The narrow section leading directly from the summit of Crib Goch itself is the bit that you often see on Youtube, witht he fisheye GoPro lens making it look narrower and steeper than it actually is. Those videos also miss out the more dangerous sections that come later, around Crib y Ddysgl and Garnedd Ugain. I shot this video to show what it's actually like in good conditions, and to show some of the highlights of this potentially dangerous route. Although it is still the route we get asked about most often, Crib Goch is a place where people do fall and become seriously injured, or worse. Not an hour before filming this Llanberis Mountain Rescue Team and HM Coastguard were involved in the rescue of a scrambler with a broken leg. Whilst moving along the ridge I was only a few metres away from someone else who stumbled and fell a short distance due to unsuitable footwear... fortunately he managed to catch himself before serious injury. Trail magazine and the British Mountaineering Council present Britain's Mountain Challenges. In this video we're looking at one of the most dramatic ways up Snowdon – the knife-edge arête of Crib Goch. While only ranked as a Grade 1 scramble this extremely exposed approach to Wales' highest mountain is notoriously treacherous in wet or windy conditions, making benign conditions a must for any first-time attempt. It's best avoided in winter unless you're an experienced winter mountaineer with the relevant skills and tools at your disposal. It's well worth the wait though, because a fine day on Crib Goch is one of the most memorable experiences you can have in the British mountains and should be on the life list of any hillwalker, scrambler or climber. Crib Goch

Crib Goch is described as a "knife-edged" arête in the Snowdonia National Park in Gwynedd, Wales. The name means "red ridge" in the Welsh language.

The highest point on the arête is 923 metres (3,028 ft) above sea level. All routes which tackle Crib Goch are considered mountaineering routes in winter or scrambles in summer—meaning that they must cross "graded territory" as defined in Steve Ashton's "Scrambles in Snowdonia". The easiest of these lines (the "bad step" part of the route) is given a scrambling grade of Grade 1 (the most difficult being Grade 3—routes more difficult than Grade 3 are considered rock climbs).

Route

The classic traverse of Crib Goch from East to West leads up from the Pyg track to a "bad step" where hands and feet are both needed briefly. It is followed by ascent to the arête, before tackling three rock-pinnacles to a grassy col at Bwlch Coch. This first part of the ridge is exposed with precipices below, having resulted in several fatalities, even of experienced mountaineers; the Snowdonia National Park Authority describe it as "not a mountain for the inexperienced". Moreover, on fine days the ridge may be very busy and queues can form. To avoid the long queues on the ascent from the east, it is possible to ascend Crib Goch's North Ridge, which adjoins the main ridge. It is recommended that walkers who use this route do have climbing skills and climbing equipment.
