Coretta Scott King (/kɔːˈrɛtə/; April 27, 1927 – January 30, 2006) was an American author, activist, and civil rights leader, and the wife of Martin Luther King, Jr. from 1953 until his death in 1968. Coretta Scott King helped lead the African-American Civil Rights Movement in the 1960s. King was an active advocate for African-American equality. King met her husband while in college, and their participation escalated until they became central to the movement. In her early life, Coretta was an accomplished singer, and she often incorporated music into her civil rights work.
King played a prominent role in the years after her husband's 1968 assassination when she took on the leadership of the struggle for racial equality herself and became active in the Women's Movement and the LGBT rights movement. King founded the King Center and sought to make his birthday a national holiday. King finally succeeded when Ronald Reagan signed legislation which established Martin Luther King, Jr. Day. She later broadened her scope to include both opposition to apartheid and advocacy for LGBT rights. King became friends with many politicians before and after Martin Luther King's death, most notably John F. Kennedy, Lyndon B. Johnson, and Robert F. Kennedy. John F. Kennedy's phone call to her during the 1960 election was what she liked to believe was behind his victory.
Scott King was born in 1969 in Goole. Past experiences include Art Director of i-D and Creative Director of Sleazenation magazines, for which he was awarded 'Best Cover' and 'Best Designed Feature of the Year' prizes. King occasionally produces work under the banner 'CRASH!' with writer and historian Matt Worley.
King’s work has been exhibited widely in London, New York and European galleries including the ICA, KW Berlin, Portikus, White Columns, Kunstverein Munich and the Museum of Modern Art, New York.
Coretta Scott were formed in 2003 in Spokane, Washington. While the band were part of the "Screamo" movement, they often shunned the "emo" title of the period onstage, in their music (specifically, the song Fashionably Depressed) and in interviews, often encouraging people to "remember what it was like to be happy and just love music.". The band was also known for their extensive touring in their active years, listing over 300 shows on their official site.
Scream & Shout
After signing to Rise Records, the band released their full-length album Scream & Shout in August 2005. The hype leading up to its release propelled the band to the #1 spot for most hits on the PureVolume charts, topping much larger Major label bands such as Fallout Boy, Taking Back Sunday and Emery. The album was also well received by critics, with reviews in from magazines like OutBurn, iTunes and favorable mentions in Alternative Press. Absolutepunk.net described the band as having "a gift for writing catchy tunes that won’t leave your head for days."

STORYLINE:
Hundreds of mourners joined family members and celebrities at Ebenezer Baptist Church on Monday to pay their respects to the "first lady of the civil rights movement," Coretta Scott King.
Long queues of people around the church's historic sanctuary, waited for hours in freezing rain to pay their respects.
King's children attended the viewing, as did TV talk-show host Oprah Winfrey.
King, who died January 30 at age 78, was lying in honour at the church where her husband, the Reverend Martin Luther King Jr., shared his dream from the pulpit in the 1960s.
Inside the silent sanctuary, mourners filed slowly past the casket, some lingering a moment before moving on.
A shroud of flowers blanketed the lower half of the casket, and wreaths stood on either side, decorated with roses, King's favourite flower.
During the weekend, some 42-thousand mourners had walked past King's open casket at the state Capitol, where she became the first woman and the first black person to lie in honour there.
It was a striking contrast to the official snub her slain husband had been given by then-Governor Lester Maddox, an outspoken segregationist.
Mourners from as far away as California stood in line for up to two hours for the viewing, with many saying King was a continuing inspiration even in her passing.
"It was very emotional, she is a very beautiful person. Just reminded me of how we need to keep making a difference and that is just inspiring," said Barbara Richardson.
President Bush and former President Clinton lead the list of dignitaries expected to attend her funeral on Tuesday, to be held at New Birth Missionary Baptist Church, in Lithonia, where the Kings' youngest child, Bernice, is a minister.
Civil rights leaders also planned to commemorate King during a service later on Monday which was expected to include the Reverend Jesse Jackson, the Reverend Al Sharpton, Rep. John Lewis, former Atlanta Mayor Andrew Young and the Reverend Joseph Lowery.
