First Ever Footage: Watch Coral Bleaching Happen Before Your Eyes | National Geographic
Images of devastated coral reefs, a common reminder of climate change, can give the impression of a static landscape. But time-lapse footage of coral bleaching as it happens shows a surprisingly active process. This video, taken by scientists in a laboratory at Queensland University of Technology in Brisbane, Australia, captures a coral ejecting its resident population of algae. The behavior helps corals survive warmer water in the short term, but extended periods of bleaching can be lethal to corals and the ecosystems they support.

Coral Bleaching
In this video Paul Andersen shows how increasing ocean temperatures causes coral polyps to release their symbiotic algae. This process of coral bleaching decreases the availability of energy for the coral and may eventually lead to coral death.

Coral Reefs
Coral reefs are dying due to a combination of factors, including climate change, pollution, overfishing, and destructive fishing practices. Rising sea temperatures cause coral bleaching, where corals expel the symbiotic algae that provide them with food and color, leading to weakened and dying reefs. Ocean acidification, resulting from increased CO2 levels, hampers coral growth and reproduction. Pollution from agricultural runoff, sewage, and plastic waste degrades water quality and harms coral health. Additionally, overfishing disrupts the balance of reef ecosystems, while destructive practices like dynamite fishing physically destroy coral structures. These combined threats pose a significant risk to the survival of coral reefs worldwide.

Corals get their energy in part from microscopic symbiotic algae that live inside their cells. These algae, called zooxanthellae, produce sugar and other nutrients through photosynthesis. When ocean temperatures rise beyond a certain threshold, the symbiont’s photosynthetic machinery may be damaged and produce harmful reactive oxygen molecule, causing the corals to eject the algae. Without their golden-brown colored symbionts corals becomes a ghostly white in a process called bleaching and eventually die.
