Long used as an important commercial waterway, the West Branch of the Cooper River was initially connected to the Santee River near its navigation head by a canal built in the late 18th century. Though the West Branch still rises as a blackwater swamp in central Berkeley County, its main headwaters have been seamlessly shifted to Lake Moultrie by the 1940s vintage Tail Race Canal. Lake Moultrie is, in turn, fed from Lake Marion by a diversion canal built around the same time period. This artificial rerouting of the Cooper River basin has essentially unified the Santee and Cooper River systems into a single hydrological drainage entity.
The Cooper River (known upstream near Haddonfield as Cooper's Creek) was named after the Cooper family, who were some of the first European settlers in the area of Camden County, New Jersey. This tributary of the Delaware River is 16miles (25.7km) long measuring from its headwater in Gibbsboro (it is notable that the Northern Branch begins in Voorhees Township). The Cooper River Watershed is 40sqmi (103.6km²), and includes the tributaries Chandlers Run, Millard Creek, Nicholson Branch, the North Branch, and Tindale Run (the last two being the most significant). Although historically a tidal river (the most severe tide reportedly reached Kings Highway), all present tidal influence stops at the Kaighn Avenue Bridge, in Camden, where it is impounded.
Why Copper River King Salmon Is So Expensive | So Expensive Food | Business Insider
Often referred to as "the Wagyu of salmon," Copper River king salmon can reach $120 per pound. Sought after by chefs for its rich, buttery flavor, this salmon is not easy to come by. To reach its final destination in Alaska's Copper River, it has to swim 300 miles between glaciers. It's a tiring journey in which the fish builds up its strength and muscle. The cold waters of the Copper River are challenging for fishers too, who set sail with no guarantee they will catch any fish at all. So is Copper River king salmon worth the challenge? And why is it so expensive?

Often referred to as "the Wagyu of salmon," Copper River king salmon can reach $120 per pound. Sought after by chefs for its rich, buttery flavor, this salmon is not easy to come by. To reach its final destination in Alaska's Copper River, it has to swim 300 miles between glaciers. It's a tiring journey in which the fish builds up its strength and muscle. The cold waters of the Copper River are challenging for fishers too, who set sail with no guarantee they will catch any fish at all. So is Copper River king salmon worth the challenge? And why is it so expensive?

Why Copper River King Salmon Is So Expensive | So Expensive Food | Business Insider
The Cooper River has made a huge impact on the Lowcountry of South Carolina. The river, known as the "cradle of history," still makes a huge economic impact as an important commercial waterway for Berkeley County.
Between 1907 and 1911, in the face of howling winds, surging glaciers, and temperatures falling to 60 below zero, the Copper River & Northwestern Railway was built through the wilderness of eastern Alaska. This video traces the epic story of the railroad's construction.
The sequel to this video follows my journey along the Copper River in search of the railroad's remains:

Our second dip netting trip of the year takes us to the beautiful little town of Chitina, Alaska. The Copper River is known for its silty turbid water and Copper River Red Salmon. We harvest our annual limit of Sockeye Salmon just after midnight with time to spare and enjoy Alaska's longest days of summer.
We appreciate you tagging along for our Alaskan adventure 😀
