PQ 17 was the code name for an AlliedSecond World Warconvoy in the Arctic Ocean. In July 1942, the Arctic convoys suffered a significant defeat when Convoy PQ 17 lost 24 of its 35 merchant ships during a series of heavy enemy daylight attacks which lasted a week. The German success was possible through German signals intelligence (SIGINT) and cryptological analysis. On 27 June, the ships sailed eastbound from Hvalfjord, Iceland for the port of Arkhangelsk, Soviet Union. The convoy was located by German forces on 1 July, after which it was shadowed continuously and attacked. The convoy's progress was being observed by the British Admiralty. First Sea Lord Admiral Dudley Pound, acting on information that German surface units, including the German battleship Tirpitz, were moving to intercept, ordered the covering force away from the convoy and told the convoy to scatter. However, due to vacillation by the German high command, the Tirpitz raid never materialised. The convoy was the first joint Anglo-American naval operation under British command in the war.
On the 27th of June 1942 convoy PQ-17 departed Iceland for the Soviet Union. Out of 34 merchant ships, only 11 would make it to port. At first, things seemed to be going well for the convoy as they beat off multiple German air attacks with relative ease. But on the 4th of July, everything went wrong. An order arrived from Admiral Sir Dudley Pound, the First Sea Lord himself reading 'Convoy is to scatter'. Fearing an imminent attack from German surface ships like Tirpitz the escort ships fled west while the merchant ships made for the Soviet Union.
But the Tirpitz was nowhere near the convoy, in fact, it was still at its moorings in northern Norway. Instead of saving the convoy from disaster, Admiral Pound's order had doomed PQ-17 to destruction. Over the following week, two-thirds of the ...

The Most Dangerous Naval Route in the World - Convoy PQ-17
In June of 1942, Convoy PQ-17, consisting of nearly 300 aircraft, 600 tanks, over 4,000 trucks, and a general cargo of over 150,000 tons, took off from Hvalfjord, Iceland, on its way to the port of Arkhangelsk in the Soviet Union.
The operation was one of the Allied efforts to help the Nazi-invaded Soviet Union, but during the treacherous journey, a series of miscommunications and rushed decisions left the convoy unprotected.
German U-boards and torpedo-carrying aircraft incessantly attacked the American war vehicles, resulting in the worst convoy disaster of World War II.

At first, things seemed to be going well for the convoy as they beat off multiple German air attacks with relative ease. But on the 4th of July, everything went wrong.
Over the following week, two-thirds of the convoy were sunk by German aircraft and U-Boats. It was the biggest loss to a single British convoy in the Second World War.
In this video, IWM's Rob Rumble joins us from HMS Belfast in an attempt to uncover what went wrong. Why did Admiral Pound give the order to scatter? What was it like for the sailors and U-Boat crews? And how did the disaster of convoy PQ-17 affect the outcome of the Second World War?

The convoy was located by German forces on 1 July, after which it was shadowed continuously and attacked. The First Sea Lord Admiral Dudley Pound, acting on information that German ships, including the German battleship Tirpitz, were moving to intercept, ordered the covering force, based on the Allied battleships HMS Duke of York and USS Washington away from the convoy and told the convoy to scatter. Because of vacillation by Oberkommando der Wehrmacht (OKW, German armed forces high command), the Tirpitz raid never materialised. The convoy was the first large joint Anglo-American naval operation under British command; in Churchill's view this encouraged a more careful approach to fleet movements.
As the close escort and the covering cruiser forces withdrew westwards to intercept the German raiders, the merchant ships were left without escorts. The merchant ships were attacked by Luftwaffe aircraft and U-boats and of the 35 ships, only eleven reached their destination, delivering 70,000 long tons (71,000 metric tons) of cargo. The convoy disaster demonstrated the difficulty of passing adequate supplies through the Arctic, especially during the summer, with the midnight sun. The German success was possible through German signals intelligence and cryptological analysis

PQ 17 was the code name for an Arctic convoy that departed from Hvalfjord, Iceland, for the port of Arkhangelsk in the Soviet Union On 27 June 1942. The convoy was detected by German forces on 1 July, after which it was shadowed continuously and attacked repeatedly by aircraft and submarines over the course of a week. The German success was possible through signals intelligence (SIGINT), cryptological analysis, and because the Allied escorts were withdrawn to counter a notional German surface threat, supposedly including capital ships.

Convoy PQ 17 was the name for an Allied Arctic convoy during the Second World War. On 27 June 1942, the ships sailed from Hvalfjörður, Iceland, for the port of Arkhangelsk in the Soviet Union.

Two ships in Convoy PQ 17 to Murmansk were lost while under escort, but 22 of 35 remaining ships were sunk off the north coast of Norway after the escorts left them.
