Of unknown origin, the first recorded reference to the town's name was in 1282, when it was spelt Congelton. The element Congle could relate to the old Norse kang meaning a bend followed by the element the Old English tun meaning settlement.
History
The first settlements in the Congleton area were Neolithic. Stone Age and Bronze Age artefacts have been found in the town. Congleton was once thought to have been a Roman settlement, although there is no archaeological or documentary evidence to support this. Congleton became a market town after Vikings destroyed nearby Davenport.
Congleton was divided into 23 civil parishes and included no unparished areas. Of the 23 civil parishes, four were administered at this level of local government by town councils: Alsager, Middlewich, Sandbach, and Congleton; with the remainder having parish councils. There are two pairs of civil parishes that are grouped together so that they share a parish council. These are Hulme Walfield and Somerford Booths, whose single parish council is called "Hulme Walfield and Somerford Booths Parish Council", and Newbold Astbury and Moreton cum Alcumlow, whose single parish council is called "Newbold Astbury-cum-Moreton Parish Council".
The constituency adjoining the Peak District in Cheshire has since its 1983 creation been a Conservative stronghold.
Boundaries
1983-1997: The Borough of Congleton; and the Borough of Crewe and Nantwich ward of Haslington.
1997–present: The Borough of Congleton.
NB: The borough of Congleton and its constituent wards were abolished on 1 April 2009, when they became part of the new unitary authority of Cheshire East.
The constituency was established at the 1983 general election, and was held comfortably until 2010 by the ConservativeAnn Winterton, the wife of Sir Nicholas Winterton, the MP for the adjacent Macclesfield constituency. Both stood down at the 2010 general election; their joint statement cited the hectic life of politics as part of their reason for standing down.

The CANNIBAL of Congleton : The Tragic Tale of ANN SMITH, 1776
In this chilling account from the late 18th century, we uncover the tragic and brutal murder of 22-year-old Ann Smith at the hands of Samuel Thorley.
On a dark November day in 1776, her dismembered body was discovered in the Howty Brook, near the secluded woodland of Priesty Fields, Congleton. The horror of her savage death sent shockwaves through the local community.
Thorley, arrested and swiftly brought to justice, was tried, found guilty, and sentenced to hang in April 1777.
But the story didn’t end with his execution.
As a grim warning to others, his lifeless body was displayed in a gibbet on the very heathland near to where he committed his heinous crime—a haunting reminder of justice in an unforgiving time.

Congleton Day of Action - Retail Crime
Congleton Local Policing Unit officers were out in force speaking with local businesses about retail crime this week.
They visited shops, cafes, and pubs along with the designing out crime officers and North West Regional Crime Unit officers to talk about crime prevention, fraud and reporting crime.
Each business visited received an information pack on how to report crime and how to use Nice Investigate, which is an online tool which makes it easier for people to send CCTV to police so officers can progress with their enquiries into a crime.
