Concolitanus
Concolitanus (Greek Κογκολίτανος) was one of the two leaders of the Gaesatae, a group of Gaulish mercenaries who lived in the Alps near the Rhône and fought against the Roman Republic in the Battle of Telamon of 224 BC. He and his colleague Aneroëstes were hired by the Boii and Insubres in response to the Roman colonisation of the formerly Gallic region of Picenum. He was captured after the defeat at Telamon (modern Talamone, Tuscany). Aneroëstes escaped with a small group of followers and committed suicide.

Indeed, when a force of Transalpine Celts had crossed the Alps into Italy in 230 BC, it had been the Boii of Cisalpine Gaul who had repelled them. The Romans had sent an army but found that it was not needed. However, when the Romans partitioned the formerly-Celtic territory of Picenum in 234 BC, they created resentment among its neighbours, the Boii and the Insubres. This was deepened in 232 BC when the Romans passed a law allocating large areas of formally Celtic land to poorer citizens. These actions were recognised at the time as being provocative to the Celts and attracted some opposition because of it.[5]
In 225 BC, the Boii and Insubres paid large sums of money to the Gaesatae, mercenaries from Transalpine Celtic territories led by Aneroëstes and Concolitanus, to fight with them against Rome. The Romans, alarmed by the Celtic mobilisation, made a treaty giving Carthaginian General Hasdrubal the Fair unimpeded control of Hispania so that they could concentrate on the threat closer to home.[6]
The Romans called upon their allies in Italy to supply troops. Consul Lucius Aemilius Papus had four legions of Roman citizens, 22,000 men in total, as well as 32,000 allied troops. He stationed the majority of his forces at Ariminum. He placed 54,000 Sabines and Etruscans on the Etruscan border under the command of a praetor, and sent 40,000 Umbrians, Sarsinates, Veneti, and Cenomani to attack the home territory of the Boii to distract them from the battle. The other consul, Gaius Atilius Regulus, had an army the same size as that of Papus but was stationed in Sardinia at the time. There was also a reserve of 21,500 citizens and 32,000 allies in Rome itself and one legion in each of Sicily and Tarentum.
Papus was awarded a triumph for his part in the victory, which ended forever the Celtic threat to the Roman capital. In 224 BC two Roman armies invaded the Celtic territories and forced the Boii to submit. In 223 and 222 BC further major Roman victories followed and the Celts surrendered, giving up large tracts of land. Roman citizens were settled on this land, to the frustrated resentment of the Celts. This resentment played a significant role in the Celts going over to Hannibal when he crossed the Alps in 218 BC as part of the Second Punic War.

The Gallic army is composed mainly of heavy infantry, with several units of cavalry and war dogs, two units of skirmishers and one of light infantry.
Atilius Regulus and Aemilius Papus (Romans)
There are two Roman armies, both very similar. Both are based mostly arround infantry, though one of them lacks in heavy infantry and they have the same number and types of cavalry units. However, one army has three units of skirmishers and the other has two units of archers.

►Background story:
After the end of the First Punic War, the Romans had every right to feel pleased with their results. There had been unrest in northern Italy, but the mere appearance of an army had quashed any opposition. However, in 225 BC an alliance of Gallic tribes and mercenaries from Transalpine Gaul moved into Etruria through an unguarded pass in the Apenines. To meet this invasion, the Romans have called on the resources and manpower of all middle and southern Italy, who rapidly mobilised defensive forces. As a result, they succeeded in outmaneouvring the Gauls, and forced the invaders towards the coast of Tuscany, while another army made an unopposed landing at Pisae and prevented them from a line of retreat. The Gauls were surrounded, trapped.

The second Roman army that landed at Pisae
After Telamon the Romans decided that enough was enough. Northern Italy would have to be secured and the Gauls defeated, a task that would eventualy double the area under Rome's direct control. By 220 BC nearly all the Gallic tribes had submited and Carthage was severely weakened by the loss of one of its main sources of mercenaries. The peace won would not be long standing.

The Battle of Telamon was fought between the Roman Republic and an alliance of Celtic tribes in 225 BC. The Romans, led by the consuls Gaius Atilius Regulus and Lucius Aemilius Papus, defeated the Celts led by the Gaesatae kings Concolitanus and Aneroëstes. This removed the Celtic threat from Rome and allowed the Romans to extend their influence over northern Italy.
Rome had been at peace with the tribes of Cisalpine Gaul, the area along the Po valley in northern Italy, since inconclusive skirmishing ceased in 238 BC. Indeed, when a force of Transalpine Celts had crossed the Alps into Italy in 230 BC, it had been the Boii of Cisalpine Gaul who had repelled them. The Romans had sent an army but found that it was not needed. However, when the Romans partitioned the formerly-Celtic territory of Picenum in 234 BC, they created resentment among its neighbours, the Boii and the Insubres. This was deepened in 232 BC when the Romans passed a law allocating large areas of formally Celtic land to poorer citizens. These actions were recognised at the time as being provocative to the Celts and attracted some opposition because of it.[5]
In 225 BC, the Boii and Insubres paid large sums of money to the Gaesatae, mercenaries from Transalpine Celtic territories led by Aneroëstes and Concolitanus, to fight with them against Rome. The Romans, alarmed by the Celtic mobilisation, made a treaty giving Carthaginian General Hasdrubal the Fair unimpeded control of Hispania so that they could concentrate on the threat closer to home.[6]
The Romans called upon their allies in Italy to supply troops. Consul Lucius Aemilius Papus had four legions of Roman citizens, 22,000 men in total, as well as 32,000 allied troops. He stationed the majority of his forces at Ariminum. He placed 54,000 Sabines and Etruscans on the Etruscan border under the command of a praetor, and sent 40,000 Umbrians, Sarsinates, Veneti, and Cenomani to attack the home territory of the Boii to distract them from the battle. The other consul, Gaius Atilius Regulus, had an army the same size as that of Papus but was stationed in Sardinia at the time. There was also a reserve of 21,500 citizens and 32,000 allies in Rome itself and one legion in each of Sicily and Tarentum.
Papus was awarded a triumph for his part in the victory, which ended forever the Celtic threat to the Roman capital. In 224 BC two Roman armies invaded the Celtic territories and forced the Boii to submit. In 223 and 222 BC further major Roman victories followed and the Celts surrendered, giving up large tracts of land. Roman citizens were settled on this land, to the frustrated resentment of the Celts. This resentment played a significant role in the Celts going over to Hannibal when he crossed the Alps in 218 BC as part of the Second Punic War.

The Gaesatae, or Gaesati, were a formidable group of Gallic mercenary warriors who played a significant role in the Battle of Telamon against the Roman Republic in 225 BC. These warriors resided in the Alps near the river Rhône and left an intriguing mark on history.
The etymology of the Gaulish name "Gaisatai" sheds light on the nature of these warriors. It literally translates to '(armed) with javelins' or 'spearmen,' originating from the Celtic noun *gaisos, meaning 'spear, javelin.' This term is cognate with the Old Irish gaiscedach, referring to an 'armed person, warrior, champion.' The stem 'gaisat-' is also found in various Gaulish proper nouns like Gaesatus and Gesatius, as well as in the compound Gesato-rix, meaning 'king-spear' or 'king-javelin.' Interestingly, the Greek historian Polybius interpreted "Gaisatai" as meaning 'mercenaries.'
Polybius' historical account provides insight into the Gaesatae's involvement in conflicts. The Boii and Insubres of Cisalpine Gaul paid the Gaesatae, led by Concolitanus and Aneroëstes, to combat the Romans. This was a response to the Roman colonization of Picenum, a former Gallic territory. The Gaesatae achieved initial success by defeating a Roman army on the approach to Rome. However, the consul Lucius Aemilius Papus intervened, leading to a confrontation at Telamon in Etruria.
Noteworthy is the distinctive way the Gaesatae approached battle, as described by Polybius. Unlike their Gallic allies who fought clothed, the Gaesatae fought naked, reflecting their confidence and a desire to avoid entanglement in brambles. Diodorus Siculus also noted that some Gauls fought naked, trusting in the protection of nature. The sight of these well-built, adorned warriors dismayed the Romans initially, but the lack of protection against Roman javelins led to the Gaesatae's retreat and the slaughter of their allies.
In 222 BC, the Gaesatae were hired once again, but they faced defeat by Roman cavalry at Clastidium in the Insubres territory. According to Plutarch, the Gaesatae numbered 30,000 as they crossed the Alps, with 10,000 engaging in the Battle of Clastidium.
Comparisons have been drawn between the Gaesatae and the medieval Irish fianna, mythical small war-bands of landless young men operating independently of any kingdom. This connection adds an intriguing layer to the historical understanding of the Gaesatae and their role in the complex tapestry of ancient conflicts. The Gaesatae, with their unique tactics and historical significance, stand as a testament to the intricate dynamics of warfare in the ancient world.

The Gallic army is composed mainly of heavy infantry, with several units of cavalry and war dogs, two units of skirmishers and one of light infantry.
Atilius Regulus and Aemilius Papus (Romans)
There are two Roman armies, both very similar. Both are based mostly arround infantry, though one of them lacks in heavy infantry and they have the same number and types of cavalry units. However, one army has three units of skirmishers and the other has two units of archers.

►Background story:
After the end of the First Punic War, the Romans had every right to feel pleased with their results. There had been unrest in northern Italy, but the mere appearance of an army had quashed any opposition. However, in 225 BC an alliance of Gallic tribes and mercenaries from Transalpine Gaul moved into Etruria through an unguarded pass in the Apenines. To meet this invasion, the Romans have called on the resources and manpower of all middle and southern Italy, who rapidly mobilised defensive forces. As a result, they succeeded in outmaneouvring the Gauls, and forced the invaders towards the coast of Tuscany, while another army made an unopposed landing at Pisae and prevented them from a line of retreat. The Gauls were surrounded, trapped.

After Telamon the Romans decided that enough was enough. Northern Italy would have to be secured and the Gauls defeated, a task that would eventualy double the area under Rome's direct control. By 220 BC nearly all the Gallic tribes had submited and Carthage was severely weakened by the loss of one of its main sources of mercenaries. The peace won would not be long standing.

Concolitanus
Concolitanus (Greek Κογκολίτανος) was one of the two leaders of the Gaesatae, a group of Gaulish mercenaries who lived in the Alps near the Rhône and fought against the Roman Republic in the Battle of Telamon of 224 BC. He and his colleague Aneroëstes were hired by the Boii and Insubres in response to the Roman colonisation of the formerly Gallic region of Picenum. He was captured after the defeat at Telamon (modern Talamone, Tuscany). Aneroëstes escaped with a small group of followers and committed suicide.
