Media Ownership: Crash Course Media Literacy #8
We’ve talked about how broad a concept “the media” really is – and given that, it can be hard to keep track of all the different forces that constitute “the media.” It can be tough, but it’s not impossible. Today we’re talking about how all those big players fit together and why all those mergers and acquisitions matter to being a media literate citizen.

Democratising news media and ownership animation (2010)
Makin Good Society (2010)
Democratising news media and ownership - Making Good Society. A thriving civil society has always been dependent on free, strong and critical news media. At a time when people depend more than ever on secondary sources of information, the health of media is paramount. Yet despite the proliferation of online platforms, more of the news we receive is recycled 'churnalism' and aggregated content, and the concentration of media ownership has narrowed the sources from which original news derives. There is therefore an important role for civil society in growing local and community news media, in strengthening the transparency and accountability of news content production, and in campaigning for innovation in funding of quality news content production, including tax con...

University Assignment - Communication and Media
Topic - Media Ownership
Script:
In an ideal world, the media industry should remain impartial and act as a source of information for the public. However, the state of media concentration in Australia makes that utopia unattainable.
As fewer individuals own and control market shares, the news becomes more politically biased.
My piece will be a written report, directed at concerned media audiences and industry professionals. It will cover the political inconsistencies of media ownership, deep diving into associated ethical issues. I will discuss Australian media concentration, while referencing western countries. I will include the research conducted by the ACMA, which considers current community safeguards and if they produce news and journalistic content that meets community expectations. I will also consider whether current media supports open, pluralistic democracy in Australia, especially with groups like the Murdoch family which own and control vast shares of the media market. I will compare this to America’s media, notably the claims made by Malcolm Turnbull that US Fox News motivated rioters to storm the US Capitol by endorsing “proto-facism”. Turnbull also stated the Fox News formula was “essentially repeated in Australia in terms of Sky News”. I will examine the political influence media owners have and how this affects the preservation of democracy and free thought.
I will use Ukraine as a secondary case study, as its post-communist status gives an insight into government endorsed and privately funded media enterprises, and the effects on economy. Ukraine also offers insight into geopolitics which pitted Germany’s public against Ukraine joining the EU and was directed by the media’s avid attempts to normalise new ‘cold war’ antagonisms. I will discuss the Pigouvian Theory and the Public Choice Theory, which advocate for state-owned and privately owned media respectfully.
Our media environment is constantly shifting, often it can be difficult to differentiate between truth and the constant push of the descending attitudes of media giants. Being aware of where public focus originates is important for the maintenance of pluralism and freedom.
