Common grackles, although declining, have always been very common in most of the country. But “common” in the sense of being plentiful, does not always explain why the name arose. Common terns, for example, are not the most common terns.

The flocks of blackbirds and starlings and grackles start squabbling and feeding. I found out we have common grackles, not the boat-tailed grackles that live in other parts of the country ... I find that to be a common sentiment in the birding community.
