Committee to Protect Journalists: Trump's Attacks on Media Will Be Felt by Journalists Around World
http://democracynow.org - On Friday, the White House took the unprecedented act of barring The New York Times, CNN, Politico, the Los Angeles Times, the BBC and several other news organizations from an off-camera briefing known as a gaggle. Meanwhile, several right-wing news outlets were allowed to attend, including Breitbart, The Washington Times and One America News Network. Just hours earlier, Trump repeatedly attacked the media, describing it as an "enemy of the people." Then, on Saturday, Donald Trump announced he would not attend this year’s White House correspondents’ dinner. The last president to skip the dinner was Ronald Reagan in 1981. At the time, Reagan was recovering from an assassination attempt. We speak to Robert Mahoney, deputy executive director of the Committee to Prot...

Six months after Russian invasion of Ukraine, at least 12 journalists killed covering the war
At least 12 journalists have been killed covering the war in Ukraine, and CPJ is investigating the deaths of at least three other journalists to determine if they were work-related. Scores more have faced shelling, shooting, and detention as they work to provide vital information about the invasion. In Russia, journalists have been detained and threatened during Moscow’s crackdown on independent media, and many have fled the country. CPJ has called for the protection of Ukrainian journalists, along with the international reporters and media workers who join them in covering the conflict, and asked Ukraine to exempt them from compulsory military service.

A free press provides an essential check and balance on government by scrutinizing policymaking and public administration and helping to promote honesty, accountability and transparency in the exercise of executive, legislative and judicial power.
But as the rules-based liberal international order has come under pressure over the last decade, and technological advances have given the world a variety of platforms to publish news and opinion, so the fourth estate has found itself facing a number of challenges in fulfilling this watchdog role.
Chief among these challenges, as recent news has demonstrated, is ensuring that journalists are free to report the news safely and without reprisal.
The Committee to Protect Journalists has been awarded the 2018 Chatham House Prize by the institute’s membership in recognition of its efforts to defend the right of journalists to work without fear at a time when the free press is under serious pressure in many parts of the world.
