Comic Book Censorship: History of the Comics Code Authority (CCA) || Comic Misconceptions
In the 1940s and 50s, comic books were under attack! There was a movement that believed comics were harmful to children and were the cause of juvenile delinquency in American youth. This crusade was led by Dr. Fredric Wertham, author of Seduction of the Innocent, and it eventually led to the creation of the Comics Code Authority. The CCA was a super strict set of guidelines that comic book publishers had to follow in order to get any of their issues distributed. It also helped shape the face of comics to how we know it today. Let's learn about this incredibly important chapter in the history of comic books and shed some light on the true motivations of Fredric Wertham!

What in the world was the Comics Code Authority?
I got a question from a viewer of what in the world this "Comics Code Authority" was... a government regulation? A marketing scheme? Something more or less? A look at the CCA, what it meant to comic books, and what weird rules were included within it (and how often they were ignored).

Comic Book Censorship - Was The Comics' Code That Bad?
Comic Books have quite the interesting history when it comes to censorship. Following a moral panic in the post war years, there were concerns that these magazines were corrupting the youth. That reading horror, crime, romance, even superhero comics was leading to moral degeneracy and juvenile delinquency. Books were written, politicians mobilized there were even Senate hearings on the subject. The result the Comics Code an agreed upon form of self censorship adopted by the entire industry. What was in the code? Is any of it still in play? Does it seem to be? Did it have merit? We revisit the code so that you can decide for yourself here on Casually Comics!

How This Picture Changed the Comic Book Industry FOREVER! || Comic Misconceptions || NerdSync
Have you ever looked at an old Marvel comic book and wondered why there's a picture of Spider-Man's head where the barcode should be? This is because of the direct market of comic sales, and has had enormous repercussions on the entire comic book industry from the boom of specialty comic shops, the market for back issues, and even the speculator bubble of the 90s. There is a lot of history behind this seemingly insignificant image!

This is the third installment of my three-part series on Marvel's Civil War. This one is about the reflection of the censorship in comics and the Comics Code Authority in the 2006 Civil War comic--with speculation about the film. Be sure to catch the first two parts if you haven't already.
