Here’s what it takes to be a combat medic in the military
Army combat medics are effective on the battlefield thanks to their intense training and excellent equipment. Treating casualties under fire is about as difficult of a job as anyone in the military could ask for. Thanks to combat quick clot gauze, improved bandages and tourniquets medics save more lives than ever before. First aid training has also been greatly improved.

How Army Medics Are Trained To Save Lives In Combat | Boot Camp | Insider Business
We got an inside look at how Army combat medics are trained at Fort Sam Houston and Camp Bullis in San Antonio, Texas. About 5,000 soldiers graduate every year from the 16-week training program, which teaches soldiers to control bleeding, manage airways, and perform blood transfusions.
After 15 weeks of classroom instruction and hands-on training, trainees spend the final eight days treating patients in a simulated combat environment known as the field training exercise. Insider spent five days immersed in the course, where we observed different classes at various stages of training.

Once, when I had the privilege to talk to medics of German special operations forces, they showed me all of their equipment. In addition to tourniquets, bandages and infusions, I suddenly discovered something unusual: a neatly folded, small German flag.
Of course I wanted to know what it was all about, to which the medics replied the following: Whenever possible, they try to place the flag above the patient, whether in a tent, field camp, or vehicle. The injured soldier may not be able to hear or his consciousness may be otherwise impaired. But as soon as he sees the three familiar colors, he knows he is in the hands of his comrades, who will care for him under any circumstances. In addition, the flag means a piece of home in an otherwise hostile environment.
My respect for medics went up another 200% that day.
And it shows something else: The flag of a nation is much more than just a piece of cloth.
