Békés County
Békés County (Hungarian: Békés megye, Romanian: Bichiş), is an administrative division (county or megye) in south-eastern Hungary, on the border with Romania. It shares borders with the Hungarian counties Csongrád, Jász-Nagykun-Szolnok and Hajdú-Bihar. The capital of Békés county is Békéscsaba. The county is also part of the Danube-Kris-Mures-Tisa euroregion.
Geography
Békés county lies on the Pannonian Plain (Great Plain), it is a flat area with good soil. Average rainfall is 645 mm/year. One-fifth of the natural gas resources of Hungary can be found in Békés. The river Körös/Criş runs through the county.
Demographics
The county has a population of 377,000 (2008). More than 60% of the population lives in towns. Besides the Hungarian majority, the main minorities are the Slovaks (approx. 7,000), Roma (5,000), Romanians (4,000), Germans (1,500) and Serbs (400).
History
The area has been inhabited since 5000-4000 BC. Before the arrival of the Hungarians several other tribes lived in the area.

Békés was an administrative county (comitatus) of the Kingdom of Hungary. Its territory, which was smaller than that of present Békés county, is now in southeastern Hungary. The capital of the county was Gyula.

Békés county shared borders with the Hungarian counties Csongrád, Jász-Nagykun-Szolnok, Hajdú, Bihar, Arad and Csanád. The river Körös/Criş flowed through the county. Its area was 3671 km² around 1910.

Coat of arms
A coat of arms is a unique heraldic design on an escutcheon (i.e. shield), surcoat, or tabard. The coat of arms on an escutcheon forms the central element of the full heraldic achievement which consists of shield, supporters, crest, and motto. The design is a symbol unique to an individual person or family (except in the UK), corporation, or state.
History
The ancient Romans used similar insignia on their shields, but these identified military units rather than individuals. The first evidence of medieval coats of arms is found in the 11th century Bayeux Tapestry in which some of the combatants carry shields painted with crosses. Coats of arms came into general use by feudal lords and knights in battle in the 12th century. By the 13th century, arms had spread beyond their initial battlefield use to become a flag or emblem for families in the higher social classes of Europe, inherited from one generation to the next. Exactly who had a right to use arms, by law or social convention, varied to some degree between countries. In the German-speaking regions both the aristocracy and "burghers" (non-noble free citizens) used arms, while in most of the rest of Europe they were limited to the aristocracy. The use of arms spread to the clergy, to towns as civic identifiers, and to royally chartered organizations such as universities and trading companies. Flags developed from coats of arms, and the arts of vexillology and heraldry are closely related. The coats of arms granted to commercial companies are a major source of the modern logo.

Békés
Békés (Hungarian pronunciation: [ˈbeːkeːʃ]; Slovak: Békéš, Romanian: Bichiş) is a town in Békés county, Hungary. It lies about 10 km (6 mi) north of Békéscsaba and 190 km (118 mi) east of Budapest.
History
The area of the present town has been inhabited since ancient times, due to its good soil and proximity to rivers. After Hungarians conquered the area, Békés and its surroundings were the property of the Csolt clan. Békés (the name means "peaceful") was originally the name of the castle which gave its name to the comitatus, and, like many castles, was possibly named after its first steward. Many documents from the 13th century prove that Békés was the county seat. After 1403, when the area became the estate of the Maróthi family, Békés slowly lost its importance and the role of the centre of the comitatus was gradually taken over by Gyula.
In 1566, the castle of Gyula was occupied by the Ottoman army, and Békés fell under Ottoman rule too. The Ottomans built a motte castle in the town, but it was destroyed in 1595 when the Ottomans had to defend Gyula against the Hungarians who tried to get it back. The area became deserted. It was only exactly 100 years later, in 1695, that Békés was freed from Ottoman rule.

History
The area has been inhabited since the ancient times. In the Iron Age the area had been conquered by the Scythians, by the Celts, then by the Huns. After the Hungarian Conquest, there were many small villages in the area.
The medieval Hungarian village of Csaba was established in the 13th century, first mentioned in the 1330s. Besides Csaba, eight other villages stood where now the town stands. According to the Hungarian Royal Treasury, Békéscsaba was an ethnic Hungarian settlement in 1495. When the Turks conquered the southern and central parts of Hungary, and these territories became part of the Ottoman Empire, the town survived, but it became extinct during the fights against the Turks in the 17th century.
In 1715, Csaba is mentioned as a deserted place, but only one year later its name can be found in a document mentioning the tax-paying towns. It is likely that the new Csaba was founded by János György Harruckern, who earned distinction in the liberation fights against the Ottoman Empire and bought the area of Békés county.
In 1718, Harruckern invited Slovak settlers from Upper Hungary to the deserted area. By 1847, the town was among the twenty largest towns of Hungary, with a population of 22,000. Nevertheless, Csaba was still like a large village, with muddy streets and crowded houses.
By 1858, the railway line reached the town. This brought development; new houses and factories were built, the town began to prosper. Still, by the end of the 19th century the unemployment caused great tension, and in 1891 a revolt was oppressed by the help of Romanian soldiers.
One of the most important person in the politics of the town was András L. Áchim, who founded a peasants' party and succeeded in having Békéscsaba elevated to the rank of "city with council".
World War I brought suffering to the town. Between 1919 and 1920, Békéscsaba was under Romanian occupation. After the Treaty of Trianon, Hungary lost its most important Southern cities, Arad and Oradea, and Békéscsaba had to take over their roles, becoming the most important town of the area. Hungarians overtook Slovaks in the 1920s, become the majority according to the census was held in 1930.
Between the two world wars the recession caused poverty and unemployment, and a flood in 1925 did not help either.
Battles were not fought in the area during World War II. However, several events occurred in the town in 1944: between 24 and 26 June 1944, over 3,000 Jews were sent to Auschwitz.
On 21 September 1944, the British and American Air Force bombed the railway station and its surroundings, killing more than 100 people. On 6 October 1944, the Soviet army occupied Békéscsaba.
During the Socialist times, Békéscsaba became the county seat of Békés (1950) and began to develop into one of the most important centres of food industry of Hungary.

Beginning in the High Middle Ages (c. 1000-1200 AD), due to advances in technology, men in engaging in battle began to wear long coats of chainmail, or perhaps even plate armor. They also wore heavy helmets, masking their face, and carried large, oval, or kite-shaped shields.
This presented a problem: if soldiers increasingly covered themselves with armor, how could one distinguish friend from foe on the battlefield? Identifying other knights was difficult in the fog and chaos of war, but it was a military necessity if one’s side wanted to be victorious.
Coats of arms, or heraldry, was the solution to this problem. To identify themselves, knights would emblazon or paint their shields with color, distinctive, but simple, designs, often featuring animals (ex. lions, eagles, dragons). Knights would also replicate these designs and have them sewn to their surcoats, which was a type of sleeveless thick cloth coat that was worn under one’s armor. Over time, the term “coat of arms” solidified.
Although heraldry originated from military necessity, it soon found itself at home in the pageantry of the medieval tournament. Tournaments was chivalrous competitions, or mock fights, held before the monarch, and included activities such as jousting, and the melee. Each participant or knight would proudly bear his coat of arms.
However, as the centuries progressed, the advent and rise of firearms rendered the heavy mounted knight increasingly irrelevant on the European battlefield of the sixteenth and seventeenth centuries, and the tournament faded into history, causing the military character and nature of heraldry to give way to its use as a decorative and celebratory art.
Newly, freed from the limitations of actual shields, and the need for arms to be easily distinguished in combat, heraldic artists designed increasingly elaborate achievements, culminating in the development of “landscape heraldry”, which incorporates realistic depictions of landscapes, during the latter part of the eighteenth and early part of the nineteenth centuries.
Many people think having a coat of arms meant you were royal or noble, and filthy rich, which is NOT TRUE. Yes, nobles did have coats of arms, but so did many other classes of society. Other classes that bore arms included the untitled nobility, landed gentry, merchants & artisans, burghers & bourgeois, clergy, military, & academics.
In the British tradition, the coat of arms is typically passed to the eldest son upon the father’s death. As this process was repeated for generations and generations, some referred to them as “family crests”, which is a misnomer that has stuck to this day.
Many of the German nobles did not practice this primogeniture but instead had their estates, a right to bear arms, split between their male heirs.
In Italy, coats of arms are familial and conveyed (undifferenced) to all legitimate male heirs.
In Poland, coats of arms were associated with Polish knights’ clans’ (genealogiae), names, and war cries (godło), where heraldic devices came to be held in common by entire clans and fighting in regiments.

Over time, the term “coat of arms” solidified.
Although heraldry originated from military necessity, it soon found itself at home in the pageantry of the medieval tournament. Tournaments was chivalrous competitions, or mock fights, held before the monarch, and included activities such as jousting, and the melee. Each participant or knight would proudly bear his coat of arms.
However, as the centuries progressed, the advent and rise of firearms rendered the heavy mounted knight increasingly irrelevant on the European battlefield of the sixteenth and seventeenth centuries, and the tournament faded into history, causing the military character and nature of heraldry to give way to its use as a decorative and celebratory art.
Newly, freed from the limitations of actual shields, and the need for arms to be easily distinguished in combat, heraldic artists designed increasingly elaborate achievements, culminating in the development of “landscape heraldry”, which incorporates realistic depictions of landscapes, during the latter part of the eighteenth and early part of the nineteenth centuries.
Many people think having a coat of arms meant you were royal or noble, and filthy rich, which is NOT TRUE. Yes, nobles did have coats of arms, but so did many other classes of society. Other classes that bore arms included the untitled nobility, landed gentry, merchants & artisans, burghers & bourgeois, clergy, military, & academics.
In the British tradition, the coat of arms is typically passed to the eldest son upon the father’s death. As this process was repeated for generations and generations, some referred to them as “family crests”, which is a misnomer that has stuck to this day.
Many of the German nobles did not practice this primogeniture but instead had their estates, a right to bear arms, split between their male heirs.
In Italy, coats of arms are familial and conveyed (undifferenced) to all legitimate male heirs.
In Poland, coats of arms were associated with Polish knights’ clans’ (genealogiae), names, and war cries (godło), where heraldic devices came to be held in common by entire clans and fighting in regiments.

Békéscsaba is located in the Great Hungarian Plain, 215 km (134 mi) southeast from Budapest.
Name
Csaba is popular Hungarian given name for boys, of Turkic origin, while prefix Békés refers to the county name Békés, which means peaceful in Hungarian. Other names derived from the Hungarian one (German: Tschabe, Romanian: Bichișciaba, Slovak: Békešská Čaba).
History
The area has been inhabited since the ancient times. In the Iron Age the area had been conquered by the Scythians, by the Celts, then by the Huns. After the Hungarian Conquest, there were many small villages in the area.
The medieval Hungarian village of Csaba was established in the 13th century, first mentioned in the 1330s. Besides Csaba, eight other villages stood where now the town stands. According to the Hungarian Royal Treasury, Békéscsaba was an ethnic Hungarian settlement in 1495. When the Turks conquered the southern and central parts of Hungary, and these territories became part of the Ottoman Empire, the town survived, but it became extinct during the fights against the Turks in the 17th century.
In 1715, Csaba is mentioned as a deserted place, but only one year later its name can be found in a document mentioning the tax-paying towns. It is likely that the new Csaba was founded by János György Harruckern, who earned distinction in the liberation fights against the Ottoman Empire and bought the area of Békés county.
In 1718, Harruckern invited Slovak settlers from Upper Hungary to the deserted area. By 1847, the town was among the twenty largest towns of Hungary, with a population of 22,000. Nevertheless, Csaba was still like a large village, with muddy streets and crowded houses.
By 1858, the railway line reached the town. This brought development; new houses and factories were built, the town began to prosper. Still, by the end of the 19th century the unemployment caused great tension, and in 1891 a revolt was oppressed by the help of Romanian soldiers.
One of the most important person in the politics of the town was András L. Áchim, who founded a peasants' party and succeeded in having Békéscsaba elevated to the rank of "city with council".
World War I brought suffering to the town. Between 1919 and 1920, Békéscsaba was under Romanian occupation. After the Treaty of Trianon, Hungary lost its most important Southern cities, Arad and Oradea, and Békéscsaba had to take over their roles, becoming the most important town of the area. Hungarians overtook Slovaks in the 1920s, become the majority according to the census was held in 1930.
Between the two world wars the recession caused poverty and unemployment, and a flood in 1925 did not help either.
Battles were not fought in the area during World War II. However, several events occurred in the town in 1944: between 24 and 26 June 1944, over 3,000 Jews were sent to Auschwitz.
On 21 September 1944, the British and American Air Force bombed the railway station and its surroundings, killing more than 100 people. On 6 October 1944, the Soviet army occupied Békéscsaba.
During the Socialist times, Békéscsaba became the county seat of Békés (1950) and began to develop into one of the most important centres of food industry of Hungary.

Békés County
Békés County (Hungarian: Békés megye, Romanian: Bichiş), is an administrative division (county or megye) in south-eastern Hungary, on the border with Romania. It shares borders with the Hungarian counties Csongrád, Jász-Nagykun-Szolnok and Hajdú-Bihar. The capital of Békés county is Békéscsaba. The county is also part of the Danube-Kris-Mures-Tisa euroregion.
Geography
Békés county lies on the Pannonian Plain (Great Plain), it is a flat area with good soil. Average rainfall is 645 mm/year. One-fifth of the natural gas resources of Hungary can be found in Békés. The river Körös/Criş runs through the county.
Demographics
The county has a population of 377,000 (2008). More than 60% of the population lives in towns. Besides the Hungarian majority, the main minorities are the Slovaks (approx. 7,000), Roma (5,000), Romanians (4,000), Germans (1,500) and Serbs (400).
History
The area has been inhabited since 5000-4000 BC. Before the arrival of the Hungarians several other tribes lived in the area.

Beginning in the High Middle Ages (c. 1000-1200 AD), due to advances in technology, men in engaging in battle began to wear long coats of chainmail, or perhaps even plate armor. They also wore heavy helmets, masking their face, and carried large, oval, or kite-shaped shields.
This presented a problem: if soldiers increasingly covered themselves with armor, how could one distinguish friend from foe on the battlefield? Identifying other knights was difficult in the fog and chaos of war, but it was a military necessity if one’s side wanted to be victorious.
Coats of arms, or heraldry, was the solution to this problem. To identify themselves, knights would emblazon or paint their shields with color, distinctive, but simple, designs, often featuring animals (ex. lions, eagles, dragons). Knights would also replicate these designs and have them sewn to their surcoats, which was a type of sleeveless thick cloth coat that was worn under one’s armor. Over time, the term “coat of arms” solidified.
Although heraldry originated from military necessity, it soon found itself at home in the pageantry of the medieval tournament. Tournaments was chivalrous competitions, or mock fights, held before the monarch, and included activities such as jousting, and the melee. Each participant or knight would proudly bear his coat of arms.
However, as the centuries progressed, the advent and rise of firearms rendered the heavy mounted knight increasingly irrelevant on the European battlefield of the sixteenth and seventeenth centuries, and the tournament faded into history, causing the military character and nature of heraldry to give way to its use as a decorative and celebratory art.
Newly, freed from the limitations of actual shields, and the need for arms to be easily distinguished in combat, heraldic artists designed increasingly elaborate achievements, culminating in the development of “landscape heraldry”, which incorporates realistic depictions of landscapes, during the latter part of the eighteenth and early part of the nineteenth centuries.
Many people think having a coat of arms meant you were royal or noble, and filthy rich, which is NOT TRUE. Yes, nobles did have coats of arms, but so did many other classes of society. Other classes that bore arms included the untitled nobility, landed gentry, merchants & artisans, burghers & bourgeois, clergy, military, & academics.
In the British tradition, the coat of arms is typically passed to the eldest son upon the father’s death. As this process was repeated for generations and generations, some referred to them as “family crests”, which is a misnomer that has stuck to this day.
Many of the German nobles did not practice this primogeniture but instead had their estates, a right to bear arms, split between their male heirs.
In Italy, coats of arms are familial and conveyed (undifferenced) to all legitimate male heirs.
In Poland, coats of arms were associated with Polish knights’ clans’ (genealogiae), names, and war cries (godło), where heraldic devices came to be held in common by entire clans and fighting in regiments.
