The Pure Gold Network simulcasts each station in the network on Digital Radio in their local markets. It also broadcasts Pure Gold 80's, featuring 1980s music, Pure Gold 90's, featuring 1990s music, and, in a joint venture with the KIIS Network, the adult contemporary-formatted Chemist Warehouse Remix.
Classic hits is a radio format which generally includes rock and pop music from 1964 to 1988 or 1989, with occasional songs as recent as the early 1990s or before 1995. The term is erroneously used as a synonym for the adult hits format (which uses a slightly newer music library stretching from the 1970s through the 90s), but is more accurately characterized as a contemporary style of the oldies format, although most classic hits stations focus on pop hits from the late 1960s through the 90s.
Definition
The term "classic hits" is believed to have its birth at WZLXBoston when the station converted from "adult contemporary" to a format composed of the hipper tracks from the oldies format and album tracks from popular classic rock albums. The goal was to attract and magnetize two groups of baby boomers: those who didn't want the doo-wop and pop they found on the oldies stations, and those who didn't like the more heavy metal side of AOR stations.
Over time, the "classic hits" format has evolved into more of a station's slug line than of a tightly focused music library shared by the stations who use the term. The first branching-off in the late 1980s led to stations becoming more "classic rock"-based, and the second reincarnation manifested itself in the premises of the "Jack FM" and the "Arrow" formats. Some of the 21st-century versions are based on a music library mostly consisting of classic rock-style hits from the 1970s, along with R&B and pop hits from the late 1960s through the mid-1980s. In many of the cases, the stations are merely oldies stations that evolved into a more up-tempo sound with more newer songs, and the term is now considered a more appealing name than "oldies" to listeners and advertisers alike.
Sunshine 1530 (formerly Sunshine Gold, Sunshine Radio, Classic Hits 954 & 1530, Classic Gold 954/1530 AM, Wyvern AM and Radio Wyvern) was a radio station which broadcast to Herefordshire and Worcestershire on 1530 and 954kHz Medium Wave from studios in Worcester, England.
History
The station started life as Radio Wyvern on both FM and AM in 1982. On February 5th 1996, the station split into Wyvern FM, playing newer music, and Wyvern AM which was essentially a gold service. The AM station was then rebranded as Classic Gold to fit in with the rest of the group's AM stations. Soon afterwards, it was sold to Muff Murfin of Murfin Music International as the station overlapped with neighbouring Classic Gold 774 in Gloucestershire. Some time later, it was rebranded as Classic Hits, and became a full-fledged local service with no links to either Wyvern FM or the Classic Gold network.
In 2007, Laser Broadcasting relaunched the station as Sunshine Radio. After Laser went bust, it was purchased by Murfin Media.

Classic Hits Final broadcast
On April 28 2014 all stations part of the Classic Hits network were re-branded as The Hits. The change saw a slight change in music format with the station now playing more recent music, the change also saw ZM breakfast announcers move to The Hits to present a nationwide breakfast show. Some regions retained their local breakfast and most regions that take Polly and Grants breakfast show now have local programming between 9am and 3pm weekdays.
Classic Hits first started in 1993 when Radio New Zealand consolidated most of their then local commercial stations into one brand. Radio New Zealand sold their commercial operation in 1996. New owner The Radio Network began reducing local programming and in 1998 most Classic Hits stations were reduced to just a local breakfast show.

A Classic Hits Twelve 51 commercial - screened on TVNZ in December 1987. This commercial featured an appearance by Mark Bennett, who went on to become the voice of talk radio through Radio Pacific (then RadioLIVE, now Magic Talk) many years later.
HISTORY
1ZM (or 1251ZM as it was known since New Zealand altered its AM band frequency spacing in late 1978) still running on 1251AM as a limited commercial station by 1987. With its final attempt unsuccessful under the old Broadcasting Warrant scheme, a decision was made to attempt a further re-format and a 'Classic Hits' format was first introduced.
This format had been successful for a number of years in the United States. The small, tightly rotated playlist of 'Hit Radio' tunes was abandoned and the station instead targeted all people aged 25-44 with a playlist containing over 3,500 songs, playing everything from Dean Martin to AC/DC.
The 1987 version of Classic Hits was unlike anything else available at that time. The re-formatting was essentially an attempt to recover audience, but was still costing Radio New Zealand (RNZ) over $1 million per annum to operate as it was the only "commercial station" legally required to run without any commercials. With the change to the Classic Hits format, 1251ZM became what was known as "Classic Hits Twelve 51" and the ZM name was dropped.
The change in name marked the birth of the Classic Hits brand that would eventually be rolled out to other radio stations throughout New Zealand. The ZM stations in Wellington and Christchurch were not affected by the requirement to run limited commercials and went on to switch to FM stations during the mid-1980s.
The Lange Government's liberalisation of the Broadcasting Warrant system (which was ultimately abolished during 1989/90) saw the station finally win the right in December 1989 to broadcast in stereo on 97.4FM in Auckland and broadcast commercials. Classic Hits Twelve 51 became "Classic Hits 97FM", and the 1251AM frequency licence was transferred to Christian broadcaster Radio Rhema (now Rhema) in early 1990.
In 1992 Classic Hits 97FM in Auckland changed its logo to a green diamond with the words "Classic Hits" on a banner above and the 97FM frequency inside the diamond. A year later RNZ decided to rebrand many of its local stations to use the same logo as Classic Hits 97FM with the station's local frequency in the middle. The on-air imaging was standardized across all stations now branded as Classic Hits but initially all stations remained live and local.
In 1996 the Bolger Government sold the RNZ commercial group of stations to a new, privately owned company called The Radio Network (TRN). The sale included all stations branded as Newstalk ZB (AM) and Classic Hits (FM), as well as the ZM stations.
From 1998 most Classic Hits stations were reduced to a local breakfast show between 6-10am and outside these times took network programming from the Classic Hits 97FM studio in Auckland. The announcers on Classic Hits 97FM Auckland started producing two voice breaks outside of breakfast programming: a local voice break for Auckland listeners and a second voice break targeted at a national audience.
Classic Hits became what is now known as "The Hits" in 2014.
