It opened in 1897 and closed in 1989. Its history falls into three phases: for half a century it was a private school, for three decades it was a publicly supported grammar school and for more than a decade it was a comprehensive school. For virtually the whole of its life Clapham College occupied a site between Nightingale Lane on the edge of Clapham Common and Malwood Road SW12 8EN. The site is now occupied by Saint Francis Xavier 6th Form College (SFX).
Clapham College was also the name of the local further education college on South Side.
The present day Clapham High Street is an ancient "diversion" of the Roman military road Stane Street, which ran from London to Chichester. This followed the line of Clapham Road and then onward along the line of Abbeville Road. The ancient status of that military road is recorded on a Roman stone now placed by the entrance of Clapham Library in the Old Town, which was discovered during building operations at Clapham Common South Side in 1912. Erected by Vitus Ticinius Ascanius according to its inscription, it is estimated to date from the 1st century.
According to the history of the Clapham family maintained by the College of Heralds, in 965 King Edgar of England gave a grant of land at Clapham to Jonas, son of the Duke of Lorraine, and Jonas was thenceforth known as Jonas "de [of] Clapham". The family remained in possession of the land until Jonas's great-great grandson Arthur sided against William the Conqueror during the Norman invasion of 1066 and, losing the land, fled to the north (where the Clapham family remained thereafter, primarily in Yorkshire).
The church of St James in Clapham was founded in Norman times, and originally dedicated to St Michael. It is mentioned in records dating back to 1160. The village and church were burned during a Scottish raid following the Battle of Bannockburn in the early 14th century. The church tower was probably erected following this incident, but the rest of the church dates from the 19th century.
In the 14th century John de Clapham, who took his surname from the village, was a supporter of the Earl of Warwick and lived at Clapdale Castle. His descendants took part in the Wars of the Roses on the side of the House of Lancaster.

Did you know Clapham is the inspiration behind several Disney films? You didn't, because that's not true. Learn what is true about Clapham* as Andrew takes in the Old Town, the intergalactically famous Infernos nightclub and the local Sainsburys. The suspect was convicted of a sex offence in 2018 and was later granted asylum.
A mother and her three-year-old daughter hurt by the corrosive substance could have suffered "life-changing" injuries in the attack.

Wandsworth Prison
Britain’s largest - built 1851.
Oscar Wilde served first 6 months of his sentence here before moving to Reading.
Clapham Junction Station
1838 - It was signal box and then grew to be busiest in the world (not anymore).
Man on the Clapham Omnibus - Used by a judge in 19th Century because Clapham was an unremarkable place.
Barnard Road, off St Johns Road
Lavender Hill so called because there were fields of lavender here before development in the 1800s.
The name Clapham Common comes from Anglo Saxon - Clopp (Hill) Ham (Village) 100 people in 1100AD.
Village by the Hill .
Became popular after plague and fire drove people south.
By 1800s it attracted wealthier people who built nice houses.
Samuel Pepys gave it prestige.
Clapham Common
Holy Trinity Church - A group of Evangelical Christians, including William Wilburforce who worshipped at Clapham Common’s Holy Trinity Church were instrumental in the abolition of the slave trade. They led a campaign that resulted in the Slave Trade Act 1807 and the abolition of slavery itself in 1833
JK Rowling and Vivienne Westwood houses.
One of South London’s biggest green spaces.
Bandstand - Bowie was photographed here in the 1960s - built 1889 but still hardly ever used. Preserved at great expense. Silly really.
Clapham South Shelter
8 shelters were completed all over London.
Could hold 8000 people.
Then they got used by the government but opened again in 1944.
I 1948 it was used to house 200 of the first West Indian immigrants for 4 weeks until they could be housed.
Many settled in nearby Brixton where there was a labour exchange.
A mile of tunnels under there.
Still got the original signs and the beds.
Tour takes an hour and costs £38.50!

This London walk will take you to Clapham, which is an affluent residential suburb anchored by its High Street, which has modern Asian and European dining, gourmet burger and pizza spots. Cocktail bars with street-facing patios, wood-paneled pubs, and raucous nightclubs have a laid-back vibe.

Did you know Clapham is the inspiration behind several Disney films? You didn't, because that's not true. Learn what is true about Clapham* as Andrew takes in the Old Town, the intergalactically famous Infernos nightclub and the local Sainsburys. We talk about William Wilberforce freeing the slaves from his Clapham pad, how the Windrush generation started at Clapham South and why they wouldn't have ended up there had we had the money to build Crossrail in 1950.
*except the bit about the bars and restaurants I just made that up

Three of the UK's biggest police forces are at the core of a nationwide hunt for a man accused of an alkali attack on a mother and two young girls in south London on Wednesday.
Police are looking for Abdul Shakoor Ezedi, 35, who was last seen in north London on Wednesday evening.
The suspect was convicted of a sex offence in 2018 and was later granted asylum.
A mother and her three-year-old daughter hurt by the corrosive substance could have suffered "life-changing" injuries in the attack.
Police have warned people not to approach Ezedi and to instead call 999.

Clapham chemical attack suspect Abdul Shokoor Ezedi may be dead after going into the River Thames, police have said.
The 35-year-old has not been seen since the night of the attack on 31 January, when an alkali substance was thrown over a mother and her two children.
At a press conference on Friday police said their working hypothesis was that he had gone into the water after last being seen at Chelsea Bridge.
No body has been found and officers said one may never be recovered.
