This well known short Piobaireachd is usually played as it is written in Angus MacKay’s Manuscript, from which it has been adapted in the Kilberry book. Here it is played by Jack Taylor as it appears in Colin Campbell’s Manuscript where it is written in his system of musical words. Campbell’s title is Glengarrie’s March. The original historic seat of the MacDonell clan was at Strome Castle located on the shores of Loch Carron. This castle was granted to the Macdonell Clan by James V of Scotland in 1539. The castle was attacked and burned to the ground, in 1602, by the Mackenzie clan. The Invergarry Castle became their historic seat in 1602, the clan fortified it after the sacking of Strome Castle.
As a result of the Highland Clearances taking place in the 18th century most of the MacDonell clan emigrated to the new world. A good number of the Clan members settled in Glengarry County, Ontario, Canada.
The Glengarry heritage visitor centre was opened in 1999 and houses an exhibition that features the history of the Clan MacDonell of Glengarry.

The historic seat of the clan is Castle Tioram, located on the island Eilean Tioram in Loch Moidart, Lochaber. It is believed that the castle was built sometime in the 13th century by Clan Ruaidhri, a medieval clan. The castle may have become the historic seat of the clan Maconald of Clanranald after the lands of Lochaber were granted to them by Robert the Bruce, after the clan assisted Robert to victory at the Battle of Bannockburn, in 1314. The clan lost control of the castle in 1692 after it was seized by government forces, due to the fact that the Clan Chief aligned himself with the Jacobites. In 1715 the clan recaptured the fort only to torch it to keep it out of enemies hands. The fort has be unoccupied since and now is in extremely poor condition. The fort is now controlled by Historic Environment Scotland. The current seat of the clan is Morenish House in Killin, Perthshire, where the current chief resides with his family.
In 1944 Angus Roderick, the 23rd of Clanranald died with out leaving a heir. The chiefship of the clan was passed to a new branch known as the Macdonalds of Boisdale, this new chief was recognized by the Lord Lyon King of Arms in 1956. The Clanranald chief is also part of the High Council of Clan Donald . The High council brings all the branches of the clan together to provide leadership and guidance to a united Clan Donald. The Chief of Glengarry, The Chief of Sleat, Lord Macdonald of Macdonald, The Captain & Chief of Clanranald and The Earl of Antrim make up this council.

Clan MacDonald or Clan Donald is the largest of the Scottish Clans. Located in the Scottish Highlands, Clan Donald can trace its beginning to before twelve hundred and fifty, when Donald, the grandson of King Somerled, founded the clan on Islay island. The later chiefs have traditionally been known as the lord of the Isles, it is said they have been powerful enough to challenge the crown of Scotland.
Clan Donald’s motto is Per mare per terras, meaning, by sea and by land, and their badge crest or sigil features a crest coronet, an armored hand holding a cross.
Clan MacDonald has many branches with clan chiefs of their own. These include:
Clan Macdonald of Sleat
Clan Macdonald of Clanranald,
Clan MacDonell of Glengarry
Clan MacDonald of Keppoch
and Clan MacAlister
In 1493 after an unsuccessful attempt to gain more power in Scotland, the MacDonald chief was stripped of his title “Lord of the Isles” by the Scottish King James IV. For years the MacDonalds worked to restore this title with little progress.
In the 15th century the crown began granting charters to the various branches of Clan MacDonald based on their separate land holdings. This was a crown policy to successfully keep the large and powerful clan divided.
During the Jacobite rebellion in the 18th century clan MacDonald supported the House of Stuart against the British government. The MacDonald Clan began to decline in the late 17 hundreds due to losses during the rebellion and to the highland clearances that saw much of its clan emigrate to the new world.
The historic seat of Clan Donald is Finnlaggan Castle, on the island of Islay. The castle was built in the 13th century on top of what they believe was an Iron Age fort. The castle was demolished sometime in the 15th or 16th century.
In 1971 the last remaining properties held by a member of the MacDonald clan located on the Island of Skye came up for sale. The lands were purchased by the Clan Donald Lands Trust and house a museum located in Castle Armdale that preserves the history of the clan.
