Clan MacAlister
Clan MacAlister is a Scottish Clan and a branch of Clan Donald. The clan is the earliest branch to have split off from Clan Donald, claiming descent from Alasdair Mòr, son of Domhnall founder of Clan Donald. From Alasdair Mòr the clans takes its surname MacAlister; this surname is an Anglicisation of the Gaelic MacAlasdair meaning "son of Alasdair". In the 15th century the chief of the clan was seated in Kintyre, and the clan was centred there until the 18th century, when a chief sold the family estate in preference to a lowland estate.

Origins
Clan MacAlister is a branch of Clan Donald—one of the largest Scottish clans. The eponymous ancestor of Clan Donald is Domhnall, son of Raghnall, son of Somhairle. Traditional Clan Donald genealogies, created in the later Middle Ages, give the clan a descent from various legendary Irish figures. Modern historians, however, distrust these traditional genealogies, and consider Somhairle, son of Gille Brighde to be earliest ancestor for whom there is secure historical evidence. Somhairle, himself, was a 12th-century leader, styled "king of the isles" and "king of Argyll"; yet there is no reliable account for his rise to power.

After the forfeiture of the Lords of the Isles in 1493, the MacAlisters became so numerous as to form a separate and independent clan. At that period their chief was named John or Ian Dubh, whose residence was at Ard Phadriuc or Ardpatrick in South Knapdale. One of the family, Charles MacAlester, is mentioned as steward of Kintyre in 1481.
Alexander MacAlester was one of those Highland chieftains who were held responsible, by the act “called the Black Band,” passed in 1587, for the peaceable behaviour of their clansmen and the “broken men” who lived on their lands. He died when his son, Godfrey or Gorrie MacAlester, was yet under age.
In 1618 the laird of Loup was named one of the twenty barons and gentlemen of the shire of Argyle who were made responsible for the good rule of the earldom during Argyll’s absence. He married Margaret, daughter of Colin Campbell of Kilberry, and though, as a vassal of the Marquis of Argyll, he took no part in the wars of the Marquis of Montrose, many of his clan fought on the side of the latter.
The principal cadet of the family of Loup was MacAlister of Tarbert. There is also MacAlister of Glenbarr, county of Argyle.

The house was originally called the Crivoch House and was owned by John of Crivoch until the mid-1600s. The House was then purchased by the Somerville family. The MacAlisters acquired the property in 1792 when Charles McAlester, 12th of Loup married into the Somerville family. This marriage is said to have restored much of the MacAlister fortune that was lost after supporting the Jacobites in 1745. Kennox House is now a private retreat available for group and individual rentals.
In 1991 the Lord Lyon King of Arms recognized William St John Somerville McAlester of Loup and Kennox as the rightful chief of the MacAlister Clan. There are several cadet branches of the larger clan including the MacAlisters of Tarbet, the MacAlisters of Glenbarr and the Alexanders of Menstrie.
The Clan MacAlister Society is setup as a nonprofit organization responsible for organizing festivals, Highland Games, along with social events. The clan organization claims to connect MacAlisters from all across the world.

While some uncertainty surrounds their exact progenitor, it is widely accepted that Clan MacAlister descends from Alastair Mor, son of Donald of the Isles. Alastair Mor's presence as a witness in a charter granted by his brother Angus, Lord of the Isles, to the Abbey of Paisley around 1253 signifies the clan's early prominence. This marked the first instance of MacAlisters asserting their independence from the mighty Clan Donald.
Lands and Influence: The MacAlisters held a significant position despite their relatively small numbers. They sought to solidify their standing through strategic alliances with other noble houses. In 1481, Charles Macalister was appointed constable of the Castle of Tarbet and granted lands in Kintyre, further consolidating the clan's influence. The Castle of Tarbert, which played a pivotal role during James IV's naval campaigns, holds historical significance for the MacAlisters.
Like many clans, the MacAlisters were not immune to internal conflicts. In 1598, Godfrey Macalister killed his tutor and guardian, Charles Macalister, sparking a family quarrel. The ensuing siege of Charles' sons at their house in Askomull showcased the turbulent nature of those times. The MacAlisters were also known for their daring raids, such as the invasion of the island of Arran in 1600, where they seized the estates of John Montgomery of Skelmorlie. Another notable raid occurred two years later on the prosperous island of Bute, led by Archibald Macalister, the heir of Tarbert.
The MacAlisters faced their share of legal challenges. In 1605, Archibald and John Macalister were ordered to appear before the Privy Council and faced fines if they did not comply. Alexander Macalister, along with Angus Og, leader of the Macdonalds of Islay, were found guilty of treason and met a grim fate. However, the MacAlisters' resilience prevailed, and by 1623, Macalister of Loup held a prestigious position as a justice of the peace for Argyllshire.
The MacAlisters extended their influence beyond their ancestral lands. Settling in Stirlingshire during the 14th century, they anglicized their Celtic name to Alexander. This shift led them to the estates of Menstrie, just a stone's throw away from the renowned royal Castle of Stirling. Notably, William Alexander of Menstrie played a crucial role in promoting the colonization of Nova Scotia, earning rewards from the royal court and ascending to become the Earl of Stirling.
Legacy and Clan Center: Over time, the MacAlisters sold off their Kintyre estates, and the present chief resides in England. Nevertheless, the legacy of Clan MacAlister endures, with Glenbarr Abbey serving as the modern clan center. The abbey houses numerous artifacts and mementos that preserve the memory and heritage of this illustrious Scottish clan.

A clan at one time of considerable importance, claiming connection with the great clan Donald, is the Macalisters, formerly inhabiting the south of Knapdale, and the north of Kintyre in Argyleshire. They are traced to Alister or Alexander, a son of Angus Mor, of the clan Donald. Exposed to the encroachments of the Campbells, their principal possessions became, before long, absorbed by different branches of that powerful clan. The chief of this sept of the Macdonalds is Somerville MacAlester of Loup in Kintyre, and Kennox in Ayrshire. In 1805 Charles Somerville MacAlester, Esq. of Loup, assumed the name and arms of Somerville in addition to his own, in right of his wife, Janet Somerville, inheritrix of the entailed estate of Kennox, whom he had married in 1792.
From their descent from Alexander, eldest son of Angus Mor, Lord of the Isles and Kintyre in 1281, the grandson of Somerled, thane of Argyle, the MacAlisters claim to be the representatives, after MacDonell of Glengarry, of the ancient Lords of the Isles, as heirs male of Donald, grandson of Somerled. After the forfeiture of the Lords of the Isles in 1493, the MacAlisters became so numerous as to form a separate and independent clan. At that period their chief was named John or Ian Dubh, whose residence was at Ard Phadriuc or Ardpatrick in South Knapdale. One of the family, Charles MacAlester, is mentioned as steward of Kintyre in 1481.
Alexander MacAlester was one of those Highland chieftains who were held responsible, by the act “called the Black Band,” passed in 1587, for the peaceable behaviour of their clansmen and the “broken men” who lived on their lands. He died when his son, Godfrey or Gorrie MacAlester, was yet under age.
In 1618 the laird of Loup was named one of the twenty barons and gentlemen of the shire of Argyle who were made responsible for the good rule of the earldom during Argyll’s absence. He married Margaret, daughter of Colin Campbell of Kilberry, and though, as a vassal of the Marquis of Argyll, he took no part in the wars of the Marquis of Montrose, many of his clan fought on the side of the latter.
The principal cadet of the family of Loup was MacAlister of Tarbert. There is also MacAlister of Glenbarr, county of Argyle.

The Clan Macalister is a highland Scottish clan originating in the Kintyre District. The are considered to originally be a branch of Clan Donald. The progenitor of the clan is believed to be MacAlister of Loup and Kennox, a descendant and possibly a son of Alister Mhor , Lord of the Isles. The clan can trace its roots back to the late 13th century and opposed Robert the Bruce in his claim to the Scottish throne. The surname MacAlister is an anglicized version of the Gaelic surname “MacAlasdair”, meaning son of Alasdair. They became their own independent clan in the 15th century under the leadership of Chief Ian Dhu.
The motto of the clan is Fortiter, meaning Boldly, and the clans crest features An armoured arm with the hand holding a dagger.
The historic seat of the clan is Kennox House located in North Anyrshire in the parish of Dunlop overlooking the Glazert Burn. The house was originally called the Crivoch House and was owned by John of Crivoch until the mid-1600s. The House was then purchased by the Somerville family. The MacAlisters acquired the property in 1792 when Charles McAlester, 12th of Loup married into the Somerville family. This marriage is said to have restored much of the MacAlister fortune that was lost after supporting the Jacobites in 1745. Kennox House is now a private retreat available for group and individual rentals.
In 1991 the Lord Lyon King of Arms recognized William St John Somerville McAlester of Loup and Kennox as the rightful chief of the MacAlister Clan. There are several cadet branches of the larger clan including the MacAlisters of Tarbet, the MacAlisters of Glenbarr and the Alexanders of Menstrie.
The Clan MacAlister Society is setup as a nonprofit organization responsible for organizing festivals, Highland Games, along with social events. The clan organization claims to connect MacAlisters from all across the world.

This clan was the first that branched off from the main Clan
Donald stem, probably early in the thirteenth century. Alister
Mor, Lord of the Isles and Kintyre, in 1284, was the founder. He
opposed Bruce, who shut him up in Dundonald Castle on the
Clyde. He died there, and his estates were given to his brother,
Angus Mor, one of Bruce's supporters. As Lords of the Isles,
the dynasty was overthrown by James IV, and the MacAlisters
became a distinct clan at Ardpatrick in South Knapdale, Argyllshire.
Their descendants were called Vic-Iaii-Dhu. Mention is made of
Vic-Ian-Dhu MacAlister of Loup in 1515. The MacAlisters fought
on the side of Montrose at Inverlochy in 1645. Argyll dissuaded
Hector, their Chief, from being present. Hector's son, Godfrey,
married a daughter of Sir Robert Alontgomerie of Skelmorlie. Their
son, Alexander MacAlister of Loup, fought for Dundee at Killiecrankie
in 1669. His brother, Charles, married a daughter of Lament
of that Ilk. His grandson, Charles, added (by marriage) the Somerville
Arms to his own. Dying in 1847, he was succeeded by his son,
Charles Somerville MacAlister, who died in 1891. He was succeeded
by his son, Lieut. -Colonel Charles Somerville MacAlister. The
present Chief is the Macalister of the Loup and Kennox.

Clan MacAlister is a Scottish Clan and a branch of Clan Donald. The clan is the earliest branch to have split off from Clan Donald, claiming descent from Alasdair Mòr, son of Domhnall founder of Clan Donald. From Alasdair Mòr the clans takes its surname MacAlister; this surname is an Anglicisation of the Gaelic MacAlasdair meaning "son of Alasdair". In the 15th century the chief of the clan was seated in Kintyre, and the clan was centred there until the 18th century, when a chief sold the family estate in preference to a lowland estate.

Origins
Clan MacAlister is a branch of Clan Donald—one of the largest Scottish clans. The eponymous ancestor of Clan Donald is Domhnall, son of Raghnall, son of Somhairle. Traditional Clan Donald genealogies, created in the later Middle Ages, give the clan a descent from various legendary Irish figures. Modern historians, however, distrust these traditional genealogies, and consider Somhairle, son of Gille Brighde to be earliest ancestor for whom there is secure historical evidence. Somhairle, himself, was a 12th-century leader, styled "king of the isles" and "king of Argyll"; yet there is no reliable account for his rise to power.
